It's simply an overflow pipe. Keeps the "lake" (pond) at a constant level. They are found in many water bodies. :-)

I suppose I shouldn't have made such a blanket statement. After all, I don't know where this is. Maybe its a "water circle", like a "crop circle", caused by aliens. :-)

On the other hand, if it's like the ones I've seen myself, it would be pretty difficult to get sucked into an overflow. You MIGHT get pulled slightly toward it but only an inch or two of water actually flows over the pipes lip.

To be sucked into an overflow (if that is what this is), an object would have to be very light with little water displacement, such as paper, leaves, etc.

Heavier bodies would not be drawn over the top.

I even used to cast my fishing line close to one of these and it would sink.

However, a fool COULD climb into one. All those I have seen had heavy metal grates inside near the top to prevent large objects from clogging the system. :-)

Ahhhhhhh....this has been solved. It's a new species of mammal-fish. The hole is made by a "water bunny"; actually, a catfish that has not yet evolved into a rabbit. They'll dig water holes in preparation for the upcoming winter.

A fine whole like that,would look apear as a straight cylinder in water.
