I think the message of this song is about the anxiety of seeing a loved one about to pass from illness, regardless.

Claus' husband isn't a young man. I understand that anxiety. I lost my mother last year. Losing someone close to you is a pain I can't really describe. Whether from death or break-up, it's just a stabbing feeling.

I can only imagine how Claus feels afraid to lose his beloved partner when I listen to this song.
