I note that the transcription omitted some words as unintelligible but I can hear them and if you like I can send you a complete transcript. As a research assistant I have spent hundreds of hours going over much of the available Nixon tapes, and yes there are tapes in which the words cannot be made out, but THIS snippet IS NOT one of them.

Right at the moment the Watergate tapes became an issue, when it was REALIZED that a President could lose control of their office recordings, there was quite a large bonfire that took place at the Kennedy compound. LBJ's family as well removed/destroyed recordings that were, shall we say, better left unheard.
