CodyEdwards section 8:00. My essay topic is entertainment in Second Life. I chose EBSCOhost as my main search database. I searched the key words "Second Life" and got 1332 results. Then I searched "Second Life Entertainment" and got only 17 results. I found a lot of these results to be very specific and I was looking for something a bit more general at first but this information is still valid and relates to my subject.
@CVE20 Good start! EBSCOhost is actually the name of the search interface offered by EBSCO, a publisher of many databases. I'm pretty sure the database you were in was EBSCO Academic Search Complete.
I think you didn't search "Second Life Entertainment" within a single pair of quotes; if you did, you would have gotten zero results (because you'd only receive results for which that exact string of words was found, and there aren't any). Did you search "Second Life" as a subject heading?

The search was more successful with economy added because the first search was too broad. The search results for the second one were helpful and the title of the first one was "how virtual are virtual economies?"
@kpb24700 Good start! Were you search "Second Life" as a keyword or as a subject term? Try it as a subject term for more precision. I'll review this in class on Feb 14.
Try using different terms in place of "economy". For instance, finance, investment, entrepreneurship, etc.

This 9:00 video covers a lot of ground, including: Different ways to access library databases EBSCO Academic Search Complete, the library's largest multidisciplinary database Keyword searching How to filter results with subject term (also known as subject headings) How to search using subject terms
That's a lot of information! Watch the video. I recommend pausing the video from time to time and following along in a separate tab from the library homepage.
Do the following activity by Mon eve, Feb 6:: Identify a database appropriate for your first essay. Do a keyword search for your essay topic (hint: make "Second Life" one of your search terms. Use quotes around it!) Identify the subject heading that most closely represents "Second Life" in your database. Filter your results using it.
Add a comment to the YouTube video, listing your avatar name, essay topic, the database you chose, the keywords you used, and the subject heading you identified. How many results did you have at first? How many results after you filtered your results by the subject heading? Did you find any good sources of information for your paper? If you get stuck during this activity, just note how far you got, and where you ran into challenges.
