  • Having been an Ultravox fan for 30 years, I really wanted to see this entire BBC documentary. It's called "Synth Britannia" - and thank God for YouTube! - It's IN HERE! - in 9 parts.

  • does billy or chris still use the mini moog?

  • It's funny to hear him say here how the Minimoog is getting out of fashion, while now all people want is a Minimoog.

  • Hess look sympatric and have a great voice. One of the synthesizer kings in the world. Cool look !

  • I love this man, elegance !

  • Whoops, can't post URL's. What a pile of shite.

Anyhow search for 'Ultravox on Beeb schools prog 1983'

    My work is done.

  • I've found the full clip (On Youtube).

Check the bloke in the Space Invaders jumper, I think I want one?

  • I`m 26 years old male, i could die for them and their music,

my favorit band, 1 st.. My role model !!!!!

  • where's the next bit??????? :( :( :(

  • Argh! Won't any of you with the DVD please post it? MU fans are missing out bigtime. I would absolutely love to see the rest of this - fascinating stuff.

  • I have this on an Ultravox bootleg tape. He continues on to the PPG Wave synth and plays a sample of his voice and a bit of 'Lament'. There is also a brief clip of Warren testing his drum machine and Billy Currie speaking to the engineer.

  • My cousin owned a moog prodigy back in the day, I wish he hadn't gotten rid of it :(

  • I have one that I bought in Toronto I think (songbird music store) in the mid 90s. I brought it home with me to Europe in the suitcase I checked in as luggage. :)

  • its funny how he say this the mini moog is old and nobody wants it anymore. everbody was going for the dx7 or d-50. those were the times when you could that analog stuff supercheap :)

  • Indeed ! Why didn't we know at the time ?

Anyway, I was lucky to grab a few things considered "old" at the time and I'm glad I did. This video was very interesting, thanks.

  • ended too soon :0(

  • I have that video, this is a short clip of a TV Documentary called "Design Matters (Making of the Lament video)" that was aired in 1985. After the Moog session he moves on to a PPG wave synt and demos some sounds from Lament song. Very sweet.

  • mmm.. it may have been re-cycled/culled for that, but i am pretty sure this was part of a BBC O.R.S. Special on Synthesizer Music that featured Kraftwerk, Peter Baumann, JM Jarre etc. and a makeshift "chart" that mostly comprised of stuff they had video clips for!

As for the full Documentary, i now must INSIST on seeing it before i die :)

  • I actually thought it was something else... I recall a schools program about music where a guy and woman were talking with different people... the guy started hammering out hiky tonk piano on a primitive sampler on the BBC Model B IIRC

The fairlight, PPG and other things were mentioned a lot... Ultravox were defo in it... it was circa 84-86..

  • I would also love to see that DVD

  • That is awsome...

  • Any idea how his Mini was modded? What's the LED thing by the osc mixer?

  • Look up "Warren Cann interview". He talks about how they modded it to be able to sequence parts with the drum machine. The interview's very well written and worth reading too.

  • funny the scottish accent ... though a bit difficult to understand

  • ...and you can imagine what you sound like to us!...its just we are to polite to tell you, but I can think of a few Glaswegien adjectives

  • Well, Midge having that totally adorable and sexy Scottish accent, he could just as well read from the telephone book... *sighs*

  • I'd listen to him reading any telephone book you can throw at him.

  • If you think that is hard, have a listen to Rab C Nesbitt shows here on youtube. ;D

  • i wanna see it too pleeeeeese i will lick your boots lol...

  • love it!! cucci cucci!

  • Add me to the list of people that would love to see that dvd!

  • nice nice nice. fun example!!! this is good

  • This is just the sort of video we'd love to have posted on the Analog Synthesizers group! Feel free to add it!

  • I don't supose there's any chance of you hosting this DVD? There are lots of us hard core fans / players who would love to see it.

    Thanks.

    Ken.

  • I have this on DVD, he then goes on and demo's/talks about the PPG Wave 2.2.

  • I don't supose there's any chance of you hosting this DVD? There are lots of us hard core fans / players who would love to see it.

    Thanks.

    Ken.

  • What DVD davy? a commercially available one? name it - i had no idea this clip was officially available, and complete..

  • yeah show us that dvd :)~

  • I saw Ultravox live a few times!

    That synth ruled, man!

  • The next synth is the PPG Wave 2.2 ! I´d love to see that. Very unique sounds.

    WT

  • Sadly this clip is all i have.. It was a BBC-TV special on synthesizers as part of (i think) the OXFORD ROAD SHOW.. Other clips that show came from PETER BAUMANN (strangers in the night), JEAN MICHEL JARRE (mag fields 2), KRAFTWERK (T.E.E. - english dub) under the guise of s "chart"..

  • Where's the rest? I want to know about the next synth!

  • Agreed. This is fascinating stuff. Midge Ure talking MOOGs? More please! I need to know what the next machine he's going to talk about is!

  • Cool. Where did you get this footage from? Can you upload more?
