To cut through all of this negativity and get right to the point. George Lucas did not care for the studio system nor did anyone at American Zoetrope or other small independent studios coming out at the time when he first started. When he created Lucasfilm he began to work towards the goal of someday having total creative control over the kind of movies he could make. When he got the merchandising rights for Star Wars that gave him the first step in total control over his creative process.

I like the prequels in spite of their flaws; The problem being that George Lucas is an Idea guy, but needs second and third parties to regulate, challenge, and focus his ideas into complete and competent narratives. He had that on the original and superior trilogy, on the prequels he just ran with everything that crossed his mind and no one was saying "hey lets leave that out, or lets do it this way instead of that way" etc

He gave me and the rest of the world the beautiful saga that is Star Wars (yes, all SIX of the movies. Sure I like the originals more, but I enjoy them all unlike some stuck up jerks) and honestly, I don't think the amount of money he's made has done justice to what he started. Seen RedLetterMedia's (aka Mr. Plinkett) roasting reviews of the Star Wars prequels? He makes several really good points as why the prequels lack any real characters and mostly are about fancy cgi landscapes (in order to sell more toys).

Also without Gary Kurtz, I doubt neither Star Wars nor Empire Strikes Back would have been as great as they were. Lucas's original first draft for Star Wars was pretty cheesy.

@McLarenMercedes I totally agree about Kurtz, that's why ESB is still the best film of the saga. I love Red Letter's reviews. Some of the funniest stuff on YouTube I think. The toys come afterwards. You don't make movies to sell toys, you just try to squeeze every dime in profit anyway you can. Lucas is really good at it! But they didn't say "Let's make a Spider Droid because it will make a good toy." They made it (or whatever) to try and wow the audience.

wow, Lucas, you copy many ideas from other sources, like old films, books, ancient religions, an so on, but was good, very good, Star Wars are one of the most important source of inspiration in my life, really, there are so many true things in the films, like love for family ties, for friends, courage for fight the injustice, and faith in good, and for that is sad for me the 3 last movies, because change all of the first 3 for just a lot of foolish ideas and argument, an ugly end of tale, Lucas

I enjoy all six Star Wars movies. Thoroughly. But I *can* understand why some people like some Episodes over others. What gets me is that lots of people don't seem to realize that the good parts outweigh the bad parts. There's a difference between criticism and flaming. Criticism is when you don't like a particular part of something but you still DO like some other part. Flaming is when you take a particular part and say the whole thing is bad because of that part.

The ideas of Star Wars came from him, he made the movies along with other directors that also worked hard on the movies, and we, the fans, were the ones to like Star Wars and let it become a great phenomena in the history of movie making. But when he changed scenes and put CGI and stuff in it, people were like yelling "my child hood is raped!!"

What raped my childhood was how the films were more about merchandising and catering to children than telling a story. I can't even begin to fathom how George could have thought that Jar Jar Binks was going to be the main attraction and star of the first few films.

It's a different story but I remember James Cameron telling that the studio was worried before making Titanic because they couldn't make merchandising about the film, and it was very expensive, it was a period drama, about a real disaster... no merchandising there... He wasn't the only one who came up with Star Wars, he obviously had a creative team who pretty much made the movies as well, but Lucas got his hands on the rights first for writing the script, so now his name is on everything Star Wars.

Yeah, but Star Wars is just a re-imagining of classic tales like King Arthur and 40s serials like Flash Gordon.

Obviously Lucas was much more talented back in the day with American Graffiti, Indiana Jones, and what not, but I believe the true genius of Star Wars and what made it great came from the other people that Lucas worked with. He can be credited for creating the initial outline of the story and championing the series, but that's all he did in my eyes.

@degree7 Well Lucas deserves a little more credit then for the initial outline and I don`t think his crew wher the one who cae up with the genius, cause: 1.Lucas wrote the entire script both story and screenplay before getting a crew, the entire, plt caacters, universe, premise, settings, writing, dialogue, drama, asd action sequece designs came rfrom him, 2. H served as both director ad excecutive producer and owned the film and served as creative guid and superviser................

@degree7 Most of what the other deserve credit for is with their skills adding to the project i the way Luca told them too, I mem the actors, and designers and ILM, made the movie grea the way Lucas wanted it to be but without hm they never would have gotten such instructions. He casted tha actors and direced them how too act, choose hopw to shoot scenes, and he aldo acted very obsessive nd insstructive towards everyone, giving the cinematogropher, set designer, costume designers, lighting and camera cerew and the actors very tigt instructions, and he even started ILM. HHe basicly deserves credit for all the writing directing and excutive producing and a strongly supervising role over everything else

@dreezaayy God I hope you're right on your last point, because he sure did screw up 1-3 and the ewoks and endor sequences of "revenge" of the jedi were so drawn out and boring. It was truely a grueling chore to watch those films with exception to IV and V and I grew up with them. I saw IV when I was five years old.

Honestly, THX 1138, American Graffiti, Star Wars and the Empire Strikes back is his only good work.
