They really watered this down with Robotech. All the feeling and humor is gone. I like most of the voices better, but the music is no fun and no one has as much personality. Total bummer. Trying to make this more into sci-fi with this grade of animation here is tragic and cheesmo. I liked the photo album outro way better.

Wow...it seems to me that people are simply complaining that anime is DIFFERENT then it used to be. Honestly, I don't understand why people are bitching about anime when it has grown and changed over the years! Now that is not saying that all new anime is good, but then again...the only reason people think old anime is great is because they only WATCH the classics that have lasted over the years! There was PLENTY of bad anime that was made 30 years ago, but, like music, that stuff doesn't last.

Macross Saga is my damn favourite anime since childhood. But I must say that Macross Frontier, and also Macross 7, is a fuking lame anime. Don't turn an epic anime like Macross Saga into a music anime. We want to watch epic battles and journeys, not hearing some boring love songs.

I used to love this show when I watched on Super Channel 15 years ago, but man...the writing is truly horrible. Fun, none the less.

So basically if you put an F14 on steroids (if that was possible) and tech'd it 5000 years into feature technology then sure. So I guess it's a part of the story-telling, how far they step off from realism in regards to the unchanging human elements of compassion and responsibility, unchanging even in those unusual anime-universe circumstances. Granted, in the 80's, the phrase "collateral damage" had probably not entered the common vernacular, in any place. The captain's reactions to it are still so bizarre, though.

@Vimame999: well, the 1979 was the date of birth for the idea of Macross, but 1982 was when it was broadcast in Japan (1984 was when it broadcast in US as Robotech). I thought you were talking about the actual broadcast date. Just to let you know this isn't a 70's anime. If you want to see what anime in the 70's looks like watch Mobile Suit Gundam, Gatachaman, and Captain Harlock (which is on Hulu, I believe).

Fun note about the series: The scientist at about 6:30 with the black eyes obtained the black eyes after he came into contact with alien technology/protoculture when they were first exploring the crashed SDF-1. You can read about this in the "Official" novels which also help to explain other unexplained parts about the series.

I know the sdf-1 is a large ship, but how many veritechs and pilot they have ? From the battle I saw and the good amount of explosion, the vertitech casulaties could have been high in that one battle.

Remember, that it was alien tech. humans had no idea what would happen. Its like a in-system slipspace jump from halo 2. when the covenat carrier entered S-space, it not only jumped, but it caused a whole EMP explostion, and took a few parts of a few building with them. In-system ligthspeed travle is always inpradictible in most Science Fiction movies and games.

Robotech was spliced together from 3 different animes, but for some reason worked well enough for most people. Looking back on some of it, knowing makes a few things we over-looked as kids stand out more.

But, it was still pretty entertaining with it's well-paced action, decent characters(plus character development), and reasonable plot. I doubt the original version could really be that much better

Agreed. I still consider the Gundam series to be the ultimate mecha series, but this is a very close second. VERY close. The main advantage Gundam has is its longevity. It has almost countless adaptations.

I grew up with Robotech, and to my mind it is still one of the best shows that was ever put on the air. This was a cartoon to me as a kid, but I knew that it was dealing with complex issues that no other kid's show ever dealt with. It was a show that I always came back to. It got me into Anime, but to me is still the best. I will always be a huge fan.
