the one you are thinking about is Spyro 2... i inever had the pleasure of playing the first, but i've played/have every one after, with the excusion of the newest. It just seems like they are making spyro worse with every instalment that comes out. need a return to the old formula.
I used to mash 'x' when flying around. I dunno if it makes you faster, but his wings flap more if you do and it makes you feel like you put more effort in so I always thought it helped.

He said in his latest MW3 commentary (in case you didn't watch it) that he is going to record the rest in the future, as well as Spyro and other stuff and that it would happen during the next 4-5 weeks as he is "going back home" :]
