That kid that died was trying to kill the bird with a club. I never heard of this creature until I came face to face with one recently. It was the most amazing creature I ever saw. I was all in her face taking photos - no aggression whatsoever. Maybe they DON'T enjoy being caged and abused?
i work at fleays wildlife park on the gold coast, and i prefer catching 6 meter crocs then getting in with these fellas especially the females....very territorial
They are not gentle birds, some people have no idea, I also live in Australia, people need to get there facts straight. Even if you were nice to one they would never be nice back lol!

if it was not for the fence it would have jumped an torn the persons chest open with its razor blade toes , it will strike people at any moment hence the cages they keep them behind, in the wild your best bet is to stand still as when you run they will flak you an kill you.
@vsboy25 The last recorded death caused by a cassowary was in 1912, and that was a provoked attack. They are dangerous, but they're not brutal, pointless killers. They only attack in self-defence.
@NeoItoh When in a group they will most definitely flak an attack people who may threaten there territory reason that there are not many deaths is they live in the rainforests.
@vsboy25 A 2003 study of attacks by the Southern Cassowary in Queensland found no wounds larger than punctures about 1.5 cm in diameter. Of 221 attacks studied, 150 were against humans. 75% of these were from cassowaries that had been fed by people. 71% of the time the bird chased or charged the victim. 15% of the time they kicked. Of all 150 attacks there was only one human death.
Well I live in Australia an they are very gentle birds however there claws can split a person open if they feel threaten enough, but if you don’t live in Australia come down as everybody is welcome an see them for yourself as they are amazing prehistoric looking birds.
@vsboy25 I would indeed like to see them for myself. There are a lot of things in Queensland I would like to see - it's supposed to be the one region on earth that is closest to the prehistoric world. :)
I don't think this is an agressive sound. More a communcation type. They make a sort of hissing noise when they're angry. Then, they strike. :3 Deadly big buggers.
i like that, i didnt realise but this is the most dangerous bird in the world according to guinness world records. i went looking for one in auz rainforest but never found it they had road signs warning you about them too!

More like he lingered for a little while and then died.

There are 221 recorded attacks from this bird, only one death out of all of them in 1926. The boy was kicked in the neck by one and he dropped dead.

The ridge comb on their head is full of air pockets.
They use that deep 'growl' as a form of communication which is detected in the comb.
Its so deep so that it can travel the greatest distances through rainforest.

omg, what a bizarre sound coming from that. So I take it they don't fly then? What a freaky lookin thing.

Piatnitskysaurus 3 years ago 2
Actually, they are endangered because of feral dogs, their habitat shrinking & traffic accidents.
thestateofthings 4 years ago 2
They are rapidly becoming extinct due to poaching.
There are less than 1000 left.
