I don't know why he called it a non-religion. Seems to fit the bill pretty well. Religious beliefs are by their nature irrational and therefore always potentially dangerous. It just depends whether the irrationality is directed in a harmful way or not. Older religions have had the time to evolve through the enlightenment, and push those irrationalities away from the more destructive paths (in most cases). Scientology is religion in the raw, with all it's nasty pointy bits sticking out.

Nothing makes me happier than someone who reaches out to those in need despite their religion. So often help seems to be exclusive to those who share the same system of faith. This is rediculous. Atheists helping atheists, christians helping christians, muslims helping muslims, etc.
