Tom,have you visited the Jabbo Smith site?Truly wonderful music-who said that music hath charms to soothe the savage breast?Never mind;it certainly soothes mine!Once more thank YOU for your contributions.Correct;the artist provides the entertainment but, without your skills we would never know, would we?
I should have known it!Another gem,a jewel of such perfection that it could only have stemmed from the Aladdin's Cave of Tom's treasure house. One has only to utter the magic formula,JAZZ,and Tom serves us with the best of the genre.Thank you,Tom!
She is a wonderful pianist and there will always be this debate about the speed a rag is played.I have posted this piece if anyone is interested in having a look.(not as good as this and played virtually as written)I'll just add that the written score I learned from had an editorial m/m of just 76 crotchets per minute which does seem very slow so I play it a bit faster.
Pickles & Peppers is also one of my very favorite rags... The version that resonates best with me is from an old vinyl album called "The Golden Age of Ragtime" by Riverside, circa 1960, from a pianola. When it is played slower, the listener can revel in the rhythms... It's great to hear Mimi's take on it, though, and I hope to get up to the 2007 West Coast Ragtime Society's festival and maybe experience more of her offerings... :-)
Howdy, and thanks for your comments & for saving this one as one of your "FAVORITES."
Don't forget to look for me at the WCRF in Sacramento as I plan to be there getting some more video of great performers like Mimi and others to add on my channel here on YouTube.
I agree...she plays Pickles & Peppers a bit too fast. It's one of my favorites to play and to hear. Glad to see others like it so much. The second piece is the "Jânnot Valse" by Jean-Baptiste Lafrenière.

The "Perfect Speed" is different for different folks. Some like em slower, and some like em faster. Ya never can tell!

Dear sunshinecapers,
Gee that's interesting because I was thinking she was playing it too slow. Maybe you think she is playing it too fast because you can't!
