My name is Dana Rudelier from DDB Canada, and I am working on behalf of our client the Canada Tourism Commission.
We are interested in your footage "Killer Whale Scared Sea Kayakers" on your YouTube channel and possibly editing a clip for possible use in an advertising campaign to promote Canada as a tourist destination. If you are interested, please respond via private message. Thank you in advance, and looking forward to hearing from you.
Whales are smart and humans are constantly coming out to visit them. I'd bet the whales knew they were gonna get a rise out of that raft of kayaks and to them it's fun. No one can really know what they are thinking but from the whale watch trips I've been on it's pretty clear they show off and try to interact at least on some level.
I don't think I would be happy if out orca did that here. Ours are not the resident salmon eating whales but the ones that hunt and kill things like Minki and small humpback whales.: To say nothing of porpoise, dolphin and seals. Nice vid.
Do they have to stay close like that to make it seem they are bigger to the whale? What if it was just one or two people there? Now that would be scary if that fin was coming at you and you were the only one there.
Laughing and hollering like a bunch of idiots. Those people could have died in seconds. I have witnessed similar behavior used by orcas to wash seals off of ice floes. Followed shortly by CONSUMPTION.
@ioscope They're not in the Antarctic. Different populations of orcas hunt different food and use different hunting methods. Orcas by the American coastlines typically eat fish. Transient orcas (that swim in the open ocean and occasionally pop in at the coast) eat larger mammals, such as other whales and seals.
Furthermore, no orca population actively hunts humans. If they did, we would be hearing about orca attacks. They just don't consider humans as food.
I didn't see any breaching there....maybe a porpoise...but still, just incredible. When I can lose enough weight to squeeze into a kayak, I'll be doing this as soon as possible. lol I can't imagine how incredible it would be to be there...my heart would be ready to leap out my throat!
@opoptimus Ahaha. Suggestion: Put "almost" in front of harmless and "to humans/people" behind harmless and you'll have a more valid statement, although still not perfect. "Killer Whales are harmless" kinda doesn't make sense when "Killer" is in their name. They don't always intentionally attack humans but I'm sure when you're hungry and can't find food or pissed off you're stuck in a glass tank a little snack would do just fine. Sheer size, power, and intelligence make this animal a killer.
OMG... Those things are my worst fear... I do not trust any animal that can plan how to kill me.. Killer Whales are not harmless @opoptimus.. They are the A-holes of the sea.. Goggle that
Killer whales are large dolphins, and like other dolphins, aren't aggressive or dangerous to humans. Only in very rare cases. There's no such thing as any animal being "an a-hole of the sea". Grow up
When I said they are the A-holes of the sea. Its my true opinion of them. I do not know how much you paid attention in Marine Biology in High School, but they got their name because they like to torture blue whales just to get them to open their mouths, so they can eat their tongues. After that, they let the blue whale bleed to death. Even bottle nose dolphins kill other species of dolphins for fun. Here in Florida more people die from "harmless" animals than the news reports.
Wild Manatees here in Homsasasa Springs have killed a lot of people, by holding them underwater. This is why you can no longer snorkel with them. Orcas are very very intelligent. Any animal that can analyze a situation, and find a solution is not to be trusted in my book. Ocras play with their prey and let it die on it's own. Like a Kid pulling wings off a fly and watching it die. More trainers than reported dies in Seaworld. So we are not surpised when it happens anymore
@opoptimus I'll pretend you did not just say orcas are HARMLESS. Do they attack people in the wild? Not really. Can they be harmful if they want to? Most fucking definitely.
Damn, if I saw that coming at me in the wild, I'd be pale as a sheet. Smart, bigger and stronger than a great white, and they travel in groups. I wouldn't take it for granted they were all like Shamu...
I dont blame them i would freak out too

thats actually a hunting tactic that orcas use to create a wave to in this case flip or wash an animal off of something

Not sure about anyone else but.... I don't see an orca breaching.
And they surely don't seem scared, and I don't think anyone would or should be.
