Uhm I didn't see any lyrics? I love this song though. I saw Mark on his last tour with Dire Straits........oh my God was he good. One of the best guitarists and lyricists of all time. I put him on the same shelf as Chris Rea and David Gilmour. Perfection. :)
The thing is, you can actually visualize the whole song. Such longing, it's heartbreaking ("...dooooooo you think you can lve me Mary"), but at the same time it puts a smile on your face. Songwriting at it's best....awesome.
when i was 10 i went to croatia with my parents ... this was teh sound to those holidays ... everyday in the car on those dusty roads, 35°c + sun outside and this cd in the player ... heard em till i had every single text in my mind :)
since I was 14, every time I listened to this song, I shed a few tears. Now I I'm 26 and it still happens every time! There are no words for describing Mark. He is the best, and always will be.
The lyric "When Adam saw Eve in the garden/I believe he felt the selfsame way" is probably one of the most powerful professions of love I've ever heard. Knopfler's way with words is as effortless and as passionate as his way with guitar strings.
Knopfler has always written songs of a cinematic quality, this is one of his best examples. Good suggestion of the Niehardt book. I suggest a movie, "Sweet Land," from 2007. A Norwegian bachelor farmer on the Minne. prairie in 1920 is sent a woman to marry by his parents back in Norway. He picks her up at the train station and goes immediately to the church to get married. There are complications I won't go into here. A subtle love story like no other I've seen. Trailer is on youtube.
This cd speaks to americans like none other by a british artist I can think of. To those of you who really love this song, let me make a recommendation. Read John Niehardt's biography "All is but a Begining". John was a self-taught poet in 1890's Nebraska. A railroad tycoon's daughter was studying sculpture in Paris with Rodan. She read his poetry, they exchanged letters, and she took a steam ship & train to meet him. He met her in Omaha with the marriage license in his breast pocket.
Thank you so very much for posting this song! The best Mark Knopfler song of his career, as far as I'm concerned! Its lyrics and soundscapes evoke (for me) the imagery of Terrence Malick's "Days of Heaven," my favorite movie ever! This song makes me picture the wheat fields and desperate bachelorette played by Brooke Adams, with Sam Shepard's character as the groom and without Richard Gere or Linda Manz in the mix. With that said, now I'm open to criticism... Please don't be too harsh...
Nice song, Knopfler has a very subtle touch, digression his control of the note at 02:56 reminds me of Page on the solo of I'm Gonna Crawl - it's almost as if the power is too much and he almost fails to reign it in.
Non ci sono parole per descrivere quanto sia potente MARK.

@Xenostrobe Of course, Knopfler is in complete control, so bit of a silly comparison... I admit.
