Such a good movie my favorite line is after woodrow beats the crap outta that guy and then says "Hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it" Not trying to copy top comment btw just saying what i think
Gus "Why don't you take the herd up to Montana! Jake and I will catch up later!" Woodrow "I would love to see the herd you and Jake bring, herd a whores.... maybe."
Absolutely love this movie. The music, actors, scenery, can't get any better. Watched it countless times. Man of vision you say.........yea......HELL of a vision!
The part where the journalist says they say your a man of vision and he has a flash back almost made your boy cry that's real talk. I watch from Dead Mans walk to Streets of Laredo 23 hrs
Probably the finest example of the Western, but its really all about the Human Spirit and the way it drives us on to do something that makes a change, not just in ourselves, but for everyone. It makes me proud and happy that such people as those depicted here where our forebearers. I wonder sometimes if any of us would have the strength of character it took just to survive in those times. And remember this was based on a true story.
Only the greatest theme song of all time, no big deal. Sounds like something that Aaron Copeland would've concocted. It still moves me close to tears every time I hear this. Such a perfect soundtrack to a great American story.
Great movie. Nothing made me wanna cry more than when Deetz died. Perfect story but the movie left so much out from the books. SO much about Blue Duck and eveyrthing. I really reccomend reading the books, it's a great read.
I grew up watching Westerns with my dearly departed Father and can't watch a John Wayne movie without getting teary-eyed as my Dad was so very much like "the Duke" - a strong but sensitive "man's man."
"LONESOME DOVE" is my single favorite Western of all time and I am so sorry my Dad couldn't enjoy it with me (he passed in 1986).
This epic Western makes me so very proud to be a Texan.
This is the one of the most romatic songs...everytime I hear this I think of how it would be to live "back" in the day with my cowboy. Just riding and moven cattle.
What a perfection, I love it when a piece of music starts with a solo instrument like the horn and ends up in fortissimo played by the whole orchestra. In my opinion a real orchestra is way more powerful than any synthesizer… Basil Poledouris is my biggest idol he is the reason why I am encouraged about starting a carrier as a composer as well. Other composers may have scored way more films than him but it is the quality that counts in this case. Unfortunately he is dead :( .............R.I.P.
This movie is not a movie for sake. it's a reminder of how people should live, not like they do today with drugs. But to live and work, and wanna better yourself.
I saw this on DVD at Walmart and saw that it had Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones and it was a western, I thought to myself that it looks like it could be a good movie so I bought it and decided to watch part of it that night, the movie impressed me so much I watched all 6 hours of it that very night, it was so good. I have never seen a more interesting film, easily one of the best mini series and westerns Ive ever seen and one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.
Man, when Woodrow leans forward and whispers "Augustus?" when Gus is dying he shows for the first time that he fears the pain of someone close being ripped out of his life. I remembered that moment when I sat in the hospital with dear comrades during Desert Storm and held their hand while more than one died when I was in the hospital with them on the USS Mercy.
Best western of all time in my book. Never gets old and I still cry everytime Deets dies. Robert Duvall is second best cowboy EVER and is only beatin by a hair by John Wayne
This theme not only reminds me of the most epic western story every made, but also of the greatest, most honest, and kindest REAL COWBOY I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, Mr. Everett Long or as I grew up knowing him, Uncle Everett. This man would give you everything he could just so you wouldn't have to experience the displeasure of doing without. If you ever come across somebody like that just once in your lifetime then my advice to you would be to cherish every second with them!
I'm 21 years old and have watched Lonesome Dove for a good 18 years of my life and those amazing 6 hours have never once bored me it's truly one of the best things I have ever seen.
it sounds funky....why do we have to play this in orchestra T_T what does my conductor see in this. why combine 4 or more other orchestras to play this? i dont mind the good the bad the ugly, but this? O.o
@cutehippy16 have you watched the series or read the book? Its a lot more emotional then it seems. Besides this is a real western song not a spaghetti western song.
@cutehippy16 If you are getting the honor of playing this in your orchestra, I really envy you. Please, do yourself a favor. Get a few friends together with no distractions and over the course of a few days or even one night for that matter, watch this movie. Once again, I envy you getting to play this.
At the end of this film..when the reporter says people say your a man of many visions and the flashbacks occur..i feel tht Lonesome may have been the greatest story/movie of all time
@TheDiscipleofMetal Man, I'm right there with you. But try not to think about that moment unless you watch the entire movie. It's the climax of the whole story and Cal has to finally question himself. It's the most impactful moment in all of cinema in my opinion. No ending to a movie has been finer.
this movie was amazing; such vivid characters and great acting, the sets were so authentic, and the story is so bitter sweet. I love it all and it makes me dream of being in those old towns and chasing the saloon girls.
I love the movies and music. i cried when Gus died. i love the story of it when mates would do anything for each other which is like the anzac mateship a strong bound that cant be broken
This miniseries is outstanding, and it makes me feel good to read all the comments posted here telling about the memories it brings to mind. where did this great nation go wrong? people long for this so much because it is unattainable, the time of course but also the moral character of these men. a spade was a spade no matter friend of foe, its a shame that our great nation has lost that part of its character.
You "had it all" and threw it away when you were conned into believing that "democracy" is the responsible way to behave.
And now, you have become a Nation of Slaves; just like we Brits (almost, but not quite so servile; yet). America was the World's last hope for liberty.
@skunkwerksrc, some of us have not given up hope. We are still a constitutional republic. Much of the world sees only the elitists on the northeast coast around Boston and New York, and the west coast around Los Angeles. The rest of America is still salvagable. We have been pushed and pushed and now people are pushing back. While I hope it won't take a call to arms to win back our country, but I think that there is a mood out there to do just that if it ever came down to it.
@NevadaWrangler pray that that avenue is still just one of at least two avenues. Since I wrote my last post, the entire U.S. House of Representatives was given a thorough sweeping during the November 2010 elections. The U.S. Senate and the White House are next in 2012. Americans are more active in politics today than they have ever been. I barely let three days go by without firing off emails or letters to my elected representatives. Regardless, keep your ink wet, and your powder dry.
breaking a horse means your making them ridable not that your beating them to death.. do you think they just jumped onto the back of a colt and it was all good? no.. you have to saddle break them, rein break them, and so on
The July issue of Texas Monthly has a great cover story and the map of the travels of Call and Gus. McMurtry originally developed it with James Stewart as Gus, John Wayne as Call, and Henry Fonda as Jake in mind, and directed by pet Bogdanovich in 1972.
There never will be a movie that catches every aspect of human life as beutifully as Lonesome Dove has. Nor will there ever be a group of actors brought together that can as gracefully portray the old west as well as this cast. Lonesome Dove is an experience, not just a movie to watch and forget, but a film that lives in the soul of everyone that has experienced it. Not all have, some may have watched and not "gotten it" but for those that have this music is the hymn of another life.
A crowning achievement, not in just western movies, but in movies as a whole. not be forgotten. when gus dies you feel like you lost a friend. ive been watching these movies sense i was 5, im almost 18. still love them.
This is only the Best movie and book ever.! and i hope it will be known forever!! but unfortunately you don't ever see any one live like this anymore... but we can all try right? thanks for posting!!!
When I was a young man I always wanted to be a cowboy and when I was in my twenties I moved from Va. To Az. and there I became a western Artist ( sculpture) and and a cowboy. My art work I will have to addmitt has open a few doors for me . I have been coyboying now off and on for the past 30 years It is a wonderful way of life, It is a hard life long hrs.its hard work also ,do kid yourself. Don't give up on your dreams, they do come true. Check out my work on You Tubr Dan hickman's art
Best movie ever made. It has heart, meaning, and grit. Good hands can relate to this movie. This is and will always be the most honest western of all time.
gus... listenin' to me talk is the only education he might get.
this mini series stirred my heart like no other as well. i'd watched it in it's entirety several times with my father. my whole fam damily in fact and best friends... my eyes always tear up, even hearing the music... good times my friends :)
LD is simply a love story.....love of the untamed West, between two men( why else would Capt. Cull do what he did for McCrae? I love it! Jon Voight did a superb job in RTLD............this is a keeper................I own every copy...willnever sell or barter!
I was I at a friends house one day, my friend was a co-writer of Larry McMurtrys Streets of Laredo, and Mr. McMurtry stop by and I had a chance to set and talk to Mr. McMurty He is a remarkable and wondreful man. He gave me the hardcover book LoneSome Dove with his name hand written inside it . I will always keep this book and will always remember setting and talking with him. Lonesome Dove is and will always be my favoret movie,
Each time I watch this movie I call up wonderful moments of backpacking trips with my 2 sons. I see their smiles in the campfires, and in the frost on their sleeping bags. When they were little fellows I would get up early and build up the campfire and just watch them sleep. Now they are older and they get up and build up the fire for me. When my Dad passed, my 3 older brothers fought and cursed for his things, all I wanted was an old ragged denim coat, and my memories of my Dad, fishing with me
Thank you for your kindness, I am not bitter @ my brothers, I am sorry for them, because their memories are held in material things, and when those things are gone so will their memories, I will have mine forever, as I hope my 2 boys will. I hope you have children and I am sure you will give them good memories, because to live in the hearts of others is to never die!
im dedicating this video to my father.. Lonesome Dove was his favorite movie.. he watched it everytime he got the chance.. i wanted this to be played at his funeral but my mom wouldnt let me.. =[
pigmanobvious; i envy you your good memories of your little brother, keep them in your heart and smile when you see a horse or this movie..some say we come into and leave this world with nothing..i say we are born with nothing however, we leave with our memories.....i believe when a memory jumps into your head about your little brother, he is sharing the same memory you are having!!!!
They play this every year at the Western Heritage in Abilene TX. If you dont know, it is a big ranch rodeo. 6's , pitchfolks, mattews/nail, hayhorns and other big outfits are there. And just for a second, you believe the old ways will last forever.
Beatiful! This is what I wanted to be played at my dear brothers funeral back in 95. He was only 22 and loved this and many westerns. The service was over , and the music should have played, but for my old fucking machine! IT WARBALDED ALL TOO HELL! I ran up to the balcony and yelled "turn it off! Hell, half the people were crying, the other half laughing! God bless them! , but 14 years later I am still crying. And I thought I was tough! Love you little brother.1972-1995
heyy im sorry for your loss.. my father died in a car crash.. on December 12, 2009.. and he loved this movie with his heart.. he was the only father i've ever had..*even tho he was my step father* but he loved westerns and his horses.. i just hope i can do what he use to do.. take and break horses for a living.. they will be in our memories forever.. when we cry they're crying with us because they are only in our thoughts now.. **RIP Douglas L. Mansell 11/13/75 - 12/12/09**
I've had to deal with the death of a loved one and the music touched me also. There is something in it that seems to say to me that we have to pick up and go on even if we are devastated, there is a purpose to this life even if we can't always see it.
@xxbmfcxx Why don't you try gentling horses rather than breaking them? It works better and it makes a better horse and a better rider for that matter. The American Plains Indians used these techniques and as history shows us, they were the masters of horsemanship. search gentling a horse.
@templerman Breaking a horse means to tame it, make it possible to ride. You can't just get on top of an untrained horse as ride it. Some horses are harder than others to break, and it can be a difficult process for everyone involved, but it has to be done.
What your saying is akin to telling an untrained puppy to play dead and expecting them to do it. Of course it's not going to work.
Also, go to any indian reservation and the numbers of starved horses
Lonesome Dove. There are no oher actors at this time who could bring the characters to life as did the cast from one of the best mini series - ever. There wll never be another Tommy Lee Jones or Robert Duvall. I would love to see them together again in a mini series about the Old West. Perhaps we need a little of the Old West again in the US. If you've never seen the movie - The Magnificent Seven - watch it.
It was a movie as well !!!! Along with Commanche Moon and Streets of Laredo and Return to Lonesome Dove. But honestly Lonesome Dove with Robert Duvall and TLJ was simply the best.
Sigh....what happened to Westerns? I'd kill to see a decent western rather than all the rehashed bullshit hollywood has been vomiting out the past decade.
Yeah I have. I'm actually reading more about Charlie Utter. Since I'm related to him, I want to know what my ancestor was like. The series makes him look NOTHING like what he really looked like.
Such a good movie my favorite line is after woodrow beats the crap outta that guy and then says "Hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it" Not trying to copy top comment btw just saying what i think

When my Dad passed, my 3 older brothers fought and cursed for his things, all I wanted was an old ragged denim coat, and my memories of my Dad, fishing with me
rongenman 2 years ago 3
thats kinda sad, youre a good man. I never had a dad, so i cant really relate to what you said, but damn, thats a pretty good and vivid statement.

Thank you. When death comes all we have are each other. It is hard to try to give advise in this kind of situation as each person suffers alone.
I am trully sorry for your so recent loss. And right at Christmas time! Hang in there buddy!
pigmanobvious 2 years ago
I've had to deal with the death of a loved one and the music touched me also. There is something in it that seems to say to me that we have to pick up and go on even if we are devastated, there is a purpose to this life even if we can't always see it.
Antlers68 2 years ago 2
@xxbmfcxx People like you are why I still keep going. I am sorry for your loss.
TheTremo99 1 year ago
@xxbmfcxx Why don't you try gentling horses rather than breaking them? It works better and it makes a better horse and a better rider for that matter. The American Plains Indians used these techniques and as history shows us, they were the masters of horsemanship. search gentling a horse.
templerman 1 year ago
