On the basis of this well made and gripping two-part semi-documentary it is impossible objectively to come to a conclusion as to the guilt or innocence of Caril. However, it is very obvious that Startkweather needed to be exterminated, just as the malaria or HIV virus needs to be eradicated. Such people have as little regard for the feelings of others as such a virus, or a parasitic worm. Their mentality is not legally insane but similar to the extra-terrestrial monster in "Alien I",
The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. She was not totally innocent and I don't think she was held against her will, but I don't believe she ever killed anyone. I don't think she would have done anything bad had it not been for him, but he would have been a killer no matter what. So basically she was semi-heartless idiot and he was a violent psychopath. My heart breaks for their poor victims, it's so tragic. Giving that bastard the death penalty was at least some amount of justice.
Caril was indeed guilty as sin. Little snot nosed brat. Look at any of those old photos & you can see that smirk on her face. Though Charlie was loathsome, he did, in fact, try to be chivalrous by taking the full blame. Caril was very much a willing & eager participant. She was the one who mutilated Carol King's genitals in a fit of jealousy, whether it was unfounded or not.

She was raised in small towns, but eventually wound up in Lincoln, working at the capital. This is kind of a morbidly amusing story. When asked how she liked living in Lincoln, she responded that is was nice & of course there wasn't nearly the crime as in Omaha. Famous last words. A week or so later, Starkweather & Fugate went on their killing spree.
I now believe that Caril was as guilty as that PIECE OF CRAP!!! I realize that she was young, but she still knew the difference between right and wrong. The only reason that Caril wrote that note in the bathroom was to HEDGE HER BETS so to speak. After she was arrested, she kept asking to see her mother, she knew good and well they were dead, she was just playing on the sympathies of those in charge.
I think this TV movie, Murder in the Heartland, should be released onto DVD. This 1993 adaptation to the story of Charles Starkweather and his murders back in 1958 in Nebraska, is a good version. Since O'Hara-Horowitz Productions and New World International TV own the rights to this movie, maybe some studio that has released some rare TV Shows and/or TV movies onto DVD in the last 5 years, or so. Maybe even Mill Creek or Echo Bridge could put this on DVD. Many Nebraskans, like me, would buy.
