@boiledhooker I think you should try to think the other way instead. It's good that popular shows, like Californication, uses GOOD music so more people get to hear it and expand their musical horizons. It's not that easy to find good music by yourself, depending on what you're looking for. Sometimes you need a little push, whether it's from a TV-show or movie. Don't hate it, be glad that people get to hear it and maybe they wanna listen to more of Zevon or something similar.
I'm gonna admit it. Didn't like Zevon before Californication... but that was an opinion based solely on Werewolves Of London. I appreciate it when TV can turn me on to something awesome. It doesn't matter how you get to liking a band... if you feel it and like it, power to you.
This is a heartbreaker. In the form of a waltz, no less.
This song makes me appreciate Warren Zevon all the more, after 30 years of being a fan. It makes me feel mournful for all the people I've lost in my life. What an artist he was, and what a shame he died young. He fulfilled his talent, though. For that we can be grateful.
I heard about Warren on Californication, didn't think much about him or his music back then but once I heard this song I realized that I was wrong. He realy is one of the greatest song writers of all time.He looks like a cool guy, sucks that he is not with us anymore,it would be great to see one of his live shows.
I'd never heard this one before. Great! Saw Warren in the 80's at Rosie's, a small club in New Orleans. He was drinking tumblers of straight Stolichnaya. Didn't seem to affect his performance one iota, though it clearly damaged his life a good deal. Whatever -- he is one of the great gems we will ever hear as a songwriter. Wonderfully quirky, witty and intelligent. I miss that intelligence.
whefta....make us play nice.........after seeing tons of snotty remarks lately under so many songs i have went to.........boy do i think exactly "play nice"...thanks nancy for this beautiful song feature......so beautiful........so honest!he has such an honesty in his face, eyes, voice, lyrics...
Warren Zevon is one of the most brilliant songwriters and composers this country has ever seen. I've been a huge fan of his ever since I saw him perform Werewolves of London on TV when I was 10 years old. 32 years later, I still love listening to his recordings.
@musicjock3 It isn't great but sometimes it gets better, sometimes. In the interim this mightn't be the best WZ to be listening to - Maybe time for Boom Boom Mancini???
The real beauty in this song is that it's a prayer that is answered in the short term - you won't get sick right now, you won't get old at this moment, and you can be together tonight with whomever. Eventually you'll get sick, you'll get old, and you can't be together with whomever you like, but right now, when those words are being said, the inevitable has yet to happen, and everything is okay.
to keep me from thinking of mine. sometimes that's all that keeps you alive and w.z. knew it. he's also the first one i've heard that put it in words.
@taotracer Amen to that right now from the grave he's helping me cope with end of life issues as I wait for my mom to pass in this hospice. For anyone going through similiar situations I highly recommend some Zevon and Moody Blues it won't take away the sadness but it lifts it to a higher level.
@taotracer There's only a scant fewI'd even consider in his league, maybe even small handful I'd consider equals...maybe. But for the life of me I can't name one better.
bless your soul old friend

@harchert Exactly the case with me. Californication, besides being the best thing on TV by a mile, has turned me on to some great music...

Love may be a pretty heavy word to pass around.
Especially if it is a feeling for someone one only knows through their music.
Warren is one of those many who are no longer with us who I can feel love for.
I don't make a pracice of buying "Biographies for profit" about musicians who are supposedly described by those who knew them personally.
Based on what I've read on YT about Warren being an asshole at times, I ask, who hasn't?
