Nothing was against all odds for the U.S. in the Pacific in 1945. Not in 44 or 43 either. If an operation had been, it would have been scrapped for another plan. The mere fact that we were at Iwo Jima (in the backyard of Japan) should have alerted her that "against all odds" was completely untrue. But she couldn't even pronounce the island name correctly so what can one expect?

America had over 24,000 casualties, but less than 7k of those were deaths. Almost ALL of Japan's 21k+ soldiers died there. Taking a month to clear an island and killing the Japanese defenders at better than a 3 to 1 ratio wasn't against all odds... it was pretty much par for the course in the Pacific campaign.

Well that photo of the Marines raising the flag was a very iconic photo that inspired many. I just don't see the "fail" here and how it dishonors any of the fighting men. The newsgirl and her friend are really stretching to find fault with Bachmann, and picking on the way she speaks looks childish. YT did a poor job on this. It took a lot of bravery on the part of the Marines that had no choice but to make frontal attacks on dug in Jap positions looked like they were against all odds.

Nothing was against all odds for the U.S. in the Pacific in 1945. Not in 44 or 43 either. If an operation had been, it would have been scrapped for another plan. The mere fact that we were at Iwo Jima (in the backyard of Japan) should have alerted her that "against all odds" was completely untrue. But she couldn't even pronounce the island name correctly so what can one expect?

Iwo Jima was a tough fight,but winnable.
A truly horrific fight and that was won against all odds was the Battle of Guadalcanal.That stopped the Japanese spread to the rest of the South Pacific and protected Allied shipping lanes.
Iwo Jima just symbolic because of the picture of the US marines placing the flag.

Those were 24,961 soldiers that wouldn't be fighting again..what's that compared to to Japan's 21,788 casualties? I question that TV anchor's credibility when it comes to making invective remarks toward a presidential canidate, especially since he gets 1/4 of his knowledge from HBO.

America had over 24,000 casualties, but less than 7k of those were deaths. Almost ALL of Japan's 21k+ soldiers died there. Taking a month to clear an island and killing the Japanese defenders at better than a 3 to 1 ratio wasn't against all odds... it was pretty much par for the course in the Pacific campaign.

Well that photo of the Marines raising the flag was a very iconic photo that inspired many. I just don't see the "fail" here and how it dishonors any of the fighting men. The newsgirl and her friend are really stretching to find fault with Bachmann, and picking on the way she speaks looks childish. YT did a poor job on this. It took a lot of bravery on the part of the Marines that had no choice but to make frontal attacks on dug in Jap positions looked like they were against all odds.

The bravery of the Japanese who knew they were doomed was amazing, that being said it was a tough fight for the Marines. But at the end of the day the USA had all the resources and the advantages. @trlrprkcon1 Except for the fact that the Economy has improved under Obama (its money well spent), what is unemployment now 8.3% and it topped out at what around 10.2-10.5%. Two full % points is a considerable drop and what the market has done is another feather in Obama's cap 6600 to what is it now almost 13000 (quite a gain). 2001-2009 was an economic, moral and intellectual disaster and certainly something that could not be fixed in less than 3 yrs (but at least the nation is on track)!!!

When Bush's budget took effect on OCT 01 Unemployment was what 5.1 % hmmm 5.1% to 10.2% thats a 100% increase and almost 3 million jobs lost in 08 alone, well done Bush baby!!

The still photo, taken by Joe Rosenthal, was a quick reaction shot when Genaust said "There she goes". The staged shot that gives this myth its energy was taken by Rosenthal about 15 min later and shows as a large group of men around the flag pole.

With over 18,000 Japanese dug into tunnels and caves on the high ground with machine guns and heavy artillery, the odds of those brave marines surviving the wide expanse of open beach was very small. Bachmann was correct in her assessment of the Pacific theater and Iwo Jima and these liberal fucks act like it was some sort of cake walk.
