@1400deadwood I'm not sure if you were aware of this, but Mel Allen did call out football games for the Alabama Crimson Tide back in the 1930s. When Allen was on vacation in New York, an executive at CBS gave him an audition for staff announcer. The rest, as they say, was history.
@otherkeithlaney - I probably knew it back in the 60s but I tend to forget things in my old age - Mel Allen was a great announcer for the Yanks back in the day. He remained VERY popular well into his latter years and will never be forgotten in the Big City.
This is the oldest kinescope of a football game I've seen. Dick Schafrath and Jim Houston went on to great careers with the Browns, but it's strange to see Schafrath playing defense and Houston catching passes -- the NCAA had limited substitution in those days.
@babyjordyn6102 did you guys have fun in the pizza hut bowl or whatever it was?
oh and you guys are done....pete carrol gone and ncaa probation coming....tOSU lives on and the poeple of LA will jump off that SC band wagon just as fast as they always have.
Wow, his prediction was so spot on. I'm impressed by the sheer right-on-the-money call he had. The ducks just dominated that game, the Buckeyes just couldn't handle such a fast offence like that. Further more, the Pac-10 is definetly a power house conference in bowls this year. Way to go ducks on your awesome, dominating win... :)
Ohio State just flat out kicks ass. Loved the sack by Houston.
I think we'll be seeing a lot pressure on Massoli this Rose Bowl causing him to cough the ball up and/or throw interceptions. They have not faced a defense like this all year.
The Webfoot D leaves a lot to be desired, so the Bucks should be able to put up 30 or more points on the board.
Ohio State is too athletic, too fast, and too strong for Oregon.
Amazing to see 2 all time great broadcasters call the game. Ironically, they were more famous for other sports: Hearn (basketball) and Allen (baseball)
Hey it's Chick Hearn! I loved hearing him on the radio. RIP! it's amazing seeing ths footage. It would be 27 more years before I manifested in physical form.
Seriously, Oregon AVERAGES 38 points per game. How are they going to put up 40 against the #5 defense in the nation?
Ohio State will eat Oregon alive in the turnover department (#4 in the nation averaging +1.33/game! vs. Oregon who is #46 in the country with +.25/game. HUGE difference.). We've been doing it all year long. I guarantee Masoli will have at least 2 (fumbles or INTs.).
WRONG. Oregon is going to hang 40 points on Ohio st. Terrell Pryor! Joke, overrated, wrong system for him, and the list goes on and on and on and on, oh yeah....you guys are the big ten.
should be a great game, i'm a die hard buckeye fan but i'm always cheering for oregon to beat USC and i love there offense this year, should be a real excting game to watch.
@babyjordyn6102 That's right and we are proud to be apart of the Big Ten....Congrats to Ohio State, Iowa, Penn State and Wisconsin for having a great bowl season.
@babyjordyn6102 That's right and we are proud to be apart of the Big Ten. Congrats to Ohio State, Iowa, Penn State and Wisconsin for having an outstanding bowl season.
This was a great game. I remember the game in Baton Rouge as well. 10-10 tie! John Cooper and Tresel are both horrible coaches but can recruit really good players to make them look like they knew what they were doing.
Yes horrible coaches like Tressel go 93-21 in their first 8 seasons, win 6 conference titles & a national championship. I dont like his conservativeness any more than you, but im not exactly sure how that qualifies him as a horrible coach. And John Cooper was just voted in the college football hall of fame (even though I dont agree with it).
my great grandpa was one of the first people to play in the rosebowl. i had to do a presentation about him in fourth grade and my dad had this really old video that we showed and my great grandpa was in it and im trying to find it one youtube but i cant. someone help me i hella wanna see what my great granpa looked like. (silas stites)
Even though we miss the 2nd and 3rd quarters, it's worth it just to watch that first drive. I mean, running the Robust-T each down to near perfection, right down the field for a TD...awesome! Vintage Woody 3 yards and a could of dust.
I was going to ask about that. I had a reference book (new at the time) back in 1980 that referred to the Oregon teams as the "Webfoots." I thought that sounded really funny at the time. Does anybody know when the Oregon team started going more by "Ducks" than by "Webfoots"?
Hard to believe Ohio State nor Oregon doesn't have a film of this game.

I like that term ''web foots''.
Isn't it great to see Dick LeBeau still going strong today after all these years?
Football is such a great game with all that terrific tradition!

Great to see the original NBC telecast. Note how primitive it is compared to the way football bowl games are now telecast.
By the mid-sixties, color and instant replay ahd been added.
Note that for field goals and "points after", viewers saw the angle from the sidelines and not (as viewers now do) from the end zones.
Chick Hearn was better known as the longtime voice of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team.
And Mel Allen was the longtime TV/Radio voice of the New York Yankees.
