@1400deadwood I'm not sure if you were aware of this, but Mel Allen did call out football games for the Alabama Crimson Tide back in the 1930s. When Allen was on vacation in New York, an executive at CBS gave him an audition for staff announcer. The rest, as they say, was history.

This is the oldest kinescope of a football game I've seen. Dick Schafrath and Jim Houston went on to great careers with the Browns, but it's strange to see Schafrath playing defense and Houston catching passes -- the NCAA had limited substitution in those days.

Great to see the original NBC telecast. Note how primitive it is compared to the way football bowl games are now telecast.

By the mid-sixties, color and instant replay ahd been added.

Note that for field goals and "points after", viewers saw the angle from the sidelines and not (as viewers now do) from the end zones.

Chick Hearn was better known as the longtime voice of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team.

And Mel Allen was the longtime TV/Radio voice of the New York Yankees.

Wow, his prediction was so spot on. I'm impressed by the sheer right-on-the-money call he had. The ducks just dominated that game, the Buckeyes just couldn't handle such a fast offence like that. Further more, the Pac-10 is definetly a power house conference in bowls this year. Way to go ducks on your awesome, dominating win... :)

I think we'll be seeing a lot pressure on Massoli this Rose Bowl causing him to cough the ball up and/or throw interceptions. They have not faced a defense like this all year.

The Webfoot D leaves a lot to be desired, so the Bucks should be able to put up 30 or more points on the board.

Ohio State is too athletic, too fast, and too strong for Oregon.

I'd say the game will look something like:

I was going to ask about that. I had a reference book (new at the time) back in 1980 that referred to the Oregon teams as the "Webfoots." I thought that sounded really funny at the time. Does anybody know when the Oregon team started going more by "Ducks" than by "Webfoots"?
