Another trashy tv bio--but they are fun in a cheesy kind of way. Loni overdoes it here and probably elsewhere. You sit watching bios like this for 90 minutes--then wonder what you learned about the subject or if you were even entertained. Like being on a soda and popcorn diet. Jayne was really quite tragic--and a rip off of Marilyn. Stil,l she must be smiling at her daughter's acting accomplishments from heaven.
Jayne acted ditzy for the press but in person she had a deeper voice and was quite smart. She just got caught up with the wrong men and had a drinking problem. If she had let her hair go naturally dark and took better roles she'd still be alive today.
Her daughter Mariska is beautiful and they do have the same facial features.
Jayne had close to a genius i.q. It's sad that women had to act this stupid to be popular. With that aside, Jayne didn't act stupid the way they're portraying her.
Yeah, she completely over exagerated Mansfield and basically turned her into a ditzy and annoying characature. Mansfield was actually a white trashy poor man's version of Marilyn Monroe; Loni either completely missed that or was not permitted to play her as she really was.
Loni not only looked alot ike her (much shorter) but did a good job. This is the way JM was in public. But right need a new one made this is almost 30 yrs old now or is wow. JM wa samazing self made....
You guys who are writing negative stuff probably were not even alive in 1980 and don't understand the climate. Loni Anderson was famous for playing a smart receptionist on WKRP in Cincinatti a very popular sitcom at the time. In this movie, which I remember very well, Jayne had two sides protrayed, her public persona and her ability to create an image for herself. BTW this movie was around before cable and was watched by everybody. I do agree that a new film should be made. lets give Loni props.
She's acting stupid in this scene because this was Mansfield's way of getting some press at the time. Later in this movie, you see the darker side of her.
I think Jayne is up above having a good laugh at this movie. Loni is just doing the stuff Mansfield was famous for! Jayne was very smart in real life, but the dumb blonde made her famous! You have to be smart to play dumb. Think about it.
Jayne never "idolised" Marilyn, but she did admire her, just as she did many other stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Crawford, Shirely Temple, Jean Harlow, and Cary Grant.
Ugh! Jayne had a much deeper voice and did NOT carry on like this. At her best, she is always super-confident and mellow when being interviewed. She was much more secure than Marilyn, who loved the press attention but was always afraid of being made to look or sound like a joke. Jayne embraced the "joke" of her own image, and therefore had nothing to fear. Later, she couldn't shake the joke,or realized it wasn't working anymore.
Loni is a good actress. But, in my humble opinion, she was wrong for this role. Jayne was EARTHY and sensual as well as funny - completely at ease with pushing the sexual envelope at the time. Loni is self-conscious and visibly uncomfortable at playing "dumb" or sexy. Jayne THREW herself willingly into her persona. Loni is struggling and stiff here - so NOT Jayne. The blame, however, cannot be completely placed on Loni. This was your typical crappy TV rush job. Terrible script. Poor direction.
I think Loni did wonderfully and I just love the dresses she wears. This was the movie that made me a huge Jayne Mansfield fan. There are mistakes in the script but since there never has been any other movie about Jayne we are fortunate this film was made.
At the time, CBS was always looking for TV movie "star vehicles" for most of their weekly TV stars; in 1980, Loni got hers in "The Jayne Mansfield Story". Today, very few people remember this movie, but they certainly remember her co-star in his current position!
Jayne certainly had an over-the-top persona, both in public and private, but not quite as extreme as portrayed here. Though in this clip you see Loni outwitting the press with some clever comebacks, as Jayne did. She was no dummy!
LOL..., well I'm inclined to disagree on the subject matter of "squeal" performances. It is documented that "high~pitch squeals" were Jayne's distinctive trademarks which separated her from her rivals, like her "fruit~o~matic" commercial for example. Also..., I think Loni Anderson was absolutely "superb..." as Jayne!!
Again great job from Loni Anderson, Ms Anderson has said that while making this movie, her hair was ruined from bleaching it, that after filming, she needed to wear a wig.
@Oreon207 Yea, I agree. Jayne never wore her hair like that. They could've done a better job with the make-up & hair.

Whatever the case, Jayne Mansfield was pretty fantastic no matter who's portraying her.

Loni is definitely "doing" Jayne as her character Rita Marlowe from "Will Success Spoil Hunter."

How was she being negative toward Marilyn? Jayne had nothing but adoration for her.

Jayne Mansfield was much better looking than Loni Anderson.
Loni was a babe, but no Jayne.
The world was shocked when Mansfield was killed, but no one will care when Loni dies.
That shows you the difference between the two.
