Isn't it interesting that when people hear stride being played, they always want to start playing it themselves? As for me I've been chasing it for 40 years now. My hands limited me.
sorry that's what you had to see for one of the latest comments on your caprice rag video of Dec. 1978. I've been a long time fan of your work since i found you on youtube when i was in highschool. I'm a huge fan of ragtime.
Wonderful stuff. I had the great pleasure of hearing Dick together with Kenny Davern and Bobby Rosengarten (The Blue Three) some years ago. Dick was a modest man but there was no hiding his superb musicianship!
boogie Bob has some utube videos-If you love boogie and stride-check him out-Bob seeley is the greatest boogie woogie player alive-check him out-amazing at his age-
One of the great stride players ever. I loved his work with Zoot--not many of striders left-Suttons gone-dick hyman is still going strong,Judy Carmichal is great also. I know a great boogie strider Bob Seeley from Detroit, he is the best living boogie woogie and stride pianist alive--A monster!
That was brilliant. Never heard of Dick Wellstead, but what a superb pianist. Pity the camera did not show his hands on the keyboard, other wise a wonderful piece of work. Thanks very much for posting
Dick always sounded "muscular with tension" and not stiff when he felt well. Astonishing ,what he was able to pound out of this lausy upright. To my knowledge he never recorded "Caprice" regulary
It's amazing he doesn't hardly move. It looks he's typing at a typewriter. The composer James P. recorded it on blue note in the 40's and it seems to go on forever. He plays something like 10 choruses on the c strain which is amazing.
Tom, I'll be posting another unusual video shortly than I think you will like..Kenny Davern remarked that Dick was one of the most under-recorded pianists.
Well, may Dick Wellstood R.I.P. as he was obviously one of those naturals who make what is a ton of study & playing to execute that kind of physicality & coordination & harmonic understanding at the keyboard look easy, when it's really a lifetime of study for most to even get anywhere near that level of playing...Great Stride piano, like great Boogie piano, can really motor along while keeping the listener's attention. Dick was an excellent player, glad you posted this as I'd not known his work.
Not only is this an amazing rendition, but he doesn't even look like he's working hard! Apparently, though, he died very young. Anybody know what happened?
Wow, this video was taken on my birthday! Well, not the year, but the right date. It's also great to see and hear Wellstood talk... something I never got to do in person.
I LOVE this video!

One of the best players I heard. Check out his version on Mule walk.
Too few Wellstood clips on Youtube. Guess he was too early.

it should say stride piano, not ragtime piano
JamesPriceJohnson 2 years ago
I suppose so, James. I was also at Manassas that year and Dick was listed on the program as playing "Ragtime Solos" It was Sunday afternoon.
So let's say that this is a Ragtime selection played by a stride pianist?? Thanks for viewing.

I pressed the wrong button and gave Mr Wellstood 2 stars. What an error. This great stride master never deserves less than 5!

If Dick were alive today, he'd be celebrating the 20th anniversary of his death. So here's a toast to a fabulous piano player.

I just thought this post was really funny:) With him celebrating his own death even though he never died!!:-D
Great playing though, and sjulius1, I do understand what you mean and raise my glass accordingly!

Sure is a great loss. I couldn't play like that if I lived to be 100. I will raise a toast to him on July 24.

Report is that Dick died of heart failure on July 24,1987, almost 20 years ago. (Palo Alto CA, to attend a jazz festival. Great loss to us all.

Wellstood was a marvel who never received enough recognition for broadening and modernizing the stride piano tradition.

Right,
Dick was a genuine talent. He was a mainstay at many of the Manassas Festivals. He was also easy to get along with.
Thanks for the comment.
