correct me if I'm wrong , but they are used in exercising and races to tie down the toung so that it doesn't go over the bit. if it were to go over the bit during a race or exercise it can be painful to the horse and injure their gums.
actually remeberthebest is also right because some horses will put their tounge over the bit and can bite it or swallow it. My APP mare puts her tounge over the bit a lot and has a tounge tie for it.
@ClaraPete123 O believe it is a ring bit. It helps keep the horse controlled a little bit more. Does not hurt the horse. Sometimes it is used if a horse gets to much on the bridle, It helps them sit back a little bit. Hope it helped.
No matter where you go or where you look in this sport (tv, live at trackside, etc), Mexicans are the horses grooms. Unless you're a rider, horse loving Americans have basically been pushed right out of the sport.
with the haskell coming up sunday, i think everyone should watch this video with the shinedown song devour playing. try it... not disrespecting the video, its on my myspace page i love it. just getting ready for sunday...
it is not to be used as a weopon towards them they are high strung and anything can jump out and scare a young horse it is only there to remind them "hey im here and u have to listen to me" u try to be alpha to a horse not to boss them around but to have respect and trust, it is just a little more reinforcement that just a halter and lead.
A chain run loosely through the mouth is done to give the horse something to constantly mess with and therefore take his mind off other thoughts, such as biting at the handler, cutting up or acting stupid. It also helps the horse to walk at a slower gait.
The pressure of the chain against the gum works well to restrain many unruly horses because it presses certain nerves that block adrenaline release reducing excitement and thus tends to have a calming effect.
I think an excersice rider sould probably weigh say 165 lbs. or less. I think the Horse's in the Kentucky Derby carry 126 lbs. But if the Horse works out with a heavier rider it will build up more stanima and be faster with less weight in a race.
That's not exactly correct. The big trainers like Todd Pletcher only use 110-125 lb riders their horses even during exercising. More weight means that there is more of a chance of injury to the horse.
I guess I should get out of the business then since I dont know what im talking about. Imagine 40 years of training, riding and racing at race tracks across America and I havent a clue about preferred exercise riders weight. Go figure
i think you are right my sisters boy friend and her have therir own farm were they break pre train and do the ready to runs and my sisters boy friend rode track work all over the world for the best trainers and his weight was more than 125lb and i am only yong but i have been around race horses my hole life
Sorry. That's just what Richard Mandella told me. 145 might be the preferred weight for some trainers but it isn't for others. The theory in some of the really big stables is that more weight equals more injuries. Todd Pletcher and Richard Mandella won't use exercise riders over 125 lbs. As a rider myself, a 145lb rider can't control a horse if it really wants to take off. Ask Ron Ellis's Kapalua Bay what he thought about his 145 lb. rider;) And you're not the only one in the business;)
It's actually quite ridiculous to think that a 145 lb rider is going to stop a horse if it really wants to take off. My 165 lb all muscle male trainer who has been riding his entire life could not stop my 16 hand jumper horse when he took off on a trail ride. And you don't here of Julio Canani's or Richard Mandella's horses taking off any more than any others in the mornings. If that was the case, a hall of fame trainer like Mandella wouldn't be using 110-125 lb exercise riders.
Larry Jones may gallop his horses, but many trainers don't agree with it. You said the preferred weight was 140-145 lbs. I have asked many trainers since I addressed this video including smaller track trainers. They said the less weight the better, but that there weren't enough good, balanced smaller riders to go around.
I don't need to be educated by articles on the internet when I have access to ask trainers directly.
@Rememberthebest nope, as long as your not over weight, and no how to deal with rearing etc, my sister is quite tall, and she exercised them, i even went with her a few times and got to a 2 year old named vic :D

Beautiful photos. What is that thing in Brown's mouth? It looks like a ring around his lower jaw not connected to the bit.

it is probably a tie for his tounge.
correct me if I'm wrong , but they are used in exercising and races to tie down the toung so that it doesn't go over the bit. if it were to go over the bit during a race or exercise it can be painful to the horse and injure their gums.

Michelle rides very well, a good work rider is important to to the development of any horse.
I galloped horses in the USA (Belmont and Saratoga) years ago and she has alot of experience.

It is much more than that.

The preferred weight for exercising horses is around 140-145lbs. For breezing horses, around 125lbs.

BTW gunius, more weight means stronger rider in the morning, meaning far fewer horses running off/being in control, meaning less injuries.
