I, too, stopped trusting "professional" reviews after Gamepro pissed on Suikoden II just because its graphics "weren't up to par."

But it's not their fault, I suppose, seeing as how publishers have some "professional" magazines by the balls to the point where they can get people fired for writing anything negative about their games.

By the time Renegade 3 was released the format was faltering, so most developers apart from Konami lazily ported the inferior Spectrum versions instead of bothering with programming specifically for the MSX's strengths. So, in spite of the fact MSX stood in between the Amstrad and Commodore64, spec-wise, all we got to play were hideous Sinclair Spectrum doppelgangers. Such was the case with Renegade 3, too.

I usually just use reviews to tell me a game sucks not that it is good, cause my idea of good may be different. but growing up i had the option renting to decide for myself. rentals are beyond overpriced now. Sounds like a typical case of the publishers or whoever bought the reviews.

I remember someone I used to work with had complained about TOTAL! Magazine's harsh review of their motorbike game (I forget the name of it), then they took the staff out for a all-expenses-paid meal once, and the very next issue they rereviewed it and gave it a huge score!

Goes to show that games reviews are, were and always will be untrustworthy scams.

Oh boy. I remember getting this for the C64. Despite protests from a friend, I bought it because the cover looked great, the reviews were positive, and it was a Renegade title (I really enjoyed Target).

Boy, did I feel like a right numpty when I put this on.

Awful looking characters, spotty hit detection (which also meant), infuriating difficulty, and the health system on the C64 version made this the biggest con I came across as a kid. Still, a great video review, Dr. Ashens!
