  • Respond to this video... Eminem? Seems to me, George Michael was the first white male artist rapping!

  • the back up sining sounds exactly like the back up singing on Style Council songs.

  • i love it!]

  • I wish the one from 'The edge of heaven' album was on youtube b/c I love that one too

  • its not hard to tell who has all the talent in wham..lol

  • reminds me of the video for mirror in the bathroom

  • OH HELL YES! Thank you thank you thank you!

  • Are they wearing ladies' shoes?

  • Sigh... memories! He has a good time with the boys on the line... hmm, foreshadowing? Either way, this is one that takes me back to my teens!

  • quelqu un a les vrais paroles de cette chanson??

  • Wow, it's George Michael and (drumroll) . . . . . . .some other guy. LOL! I never knew this existed before and I grew up in the 80s. But I like it!

  • @whitehorse43 The other guy is Andrew Ridgeley. :)

  • george michael es para mi el mejor del pop y rock y rap ....lo demuestra en esta cancion y muchos exitos mas ..es mi idolo

  • This is dance rock!

  • David Cameron may have something to say about this song .

DHSS , B1 B2 , Soul on the Dole . God the ConDem Government or Condom Government as I call it will have kittens . Not Politically Correct .

  • that jacket and those shoes just so gay... now the boots he wore in bad boys was more fitting.

  • Marvellous!!!

  • @BiancaDarling ahahahah, really!

  • @BiancaDarling

Bianca, you are a very smart person.

  • ...I feel sorry for mr average

  • oyea great!!!! I like it ;-)

  • holiday rap was way better than this and even that was bad

  • sre there two versions of this song???

  • @EddieJames1000 Yes, there are two different versions of this song, this version here on youtube is the social mix, the other version you might've heard is the unsocial mix with different lyrics.

  • aren't the two women dancing with them what became the duo Pepsi and Shirley?

  • @Sixtiesfreak: Yes, they are...

  • Thank you Jesus for making me a teen in THe 80's Amen!

  • this song cracks me up lmfao

DHSS=department health & social services, where they get their benefits, ie 'welfare' if they don't like their jobs

    george's face 1:24 - 1:25

pretty pretty boy is laughing :DDD

  • miss those days!!

  • what does DHSS mean ?

  • The 80's there will never be another decade like em. LOL...New wave forever

  • EXCELENT

  • This is bullshit, i bet there was people listening to this song and stayed on the dole thinking they were cool, then time passed and they were 20 something ub40 and thinking they pissed away their life, lol life sucks

  • @freeminded4ever OF COURSE it's bullshit, but it's bullshit exaggerated to the level of ultrabull-awesomeshitness wich makes it cool. That's what we call "camp".

  • That´s great Rap ! Best Music of Wham ever !!!

    I miss the 80ies !

  • Nice Capri's.......

  • Heheheh... Pepsi & Shirley !!!

First time for me to see the video. The lyrics are different from those on the audio LP version, which is cool because you have two different raps for the same song.

Why is it that all music videos from the UK in that era have a foggy picture quality? Is it like they lost the quality converting them from PAL to NTSC or something? hahaha!

  • GREAT MEMORIES!

  • Cristiano Ronaldo sings very well here!.

  • I'm glad George matured. This was terrible !!!!!

  • I never heard or saw this one before!!!

  • @MrsStigg Actually, it was the first video. from them . And called the first white rap then.

  • ***WHAM!FOREVER***

  • i misss this!!!! i love this!!!!!!!!!!!

  • basiljun808 I miss and love this too!! still remember the words even :)

  • i luvv thiss songggggg soooo much i want the cd for it if its still around

  • Cool song!!!! Great vid!!!! Great dancing!!! :-)

  • maybe a jet black guy with a hip hi-fi

  • Yeah!! Fuck wage slavery, automation and basic income guarantee ftw!

  • Love this song <3

  • even though he's flaming like calgary flames...his voice is to die for.

  • Ha, one could literally call me an 80s child. My sister, who's 4 years older than me, was into music at a young age (like, 10 years old) and watched all those 80s video countdown shows religiously. As with many younger sisters, I basically just did whatever she did, because at that age you look up to your big sister, right? So at 6 years old and beyond I knew the lyrics to every song bands like WHAM, Duran Duran, The Police, etc. ever did. I could WHAM rap with George and Andrew quite well, LOL.

  • 80s rule! im child of noughties but hate it .

  • For you young people who wonder what the Eighties were really like, take it from someone who was a teenager thoughout the decade: THIS is what the Eighties were actually like, especially in the UK.

  • Ponytail! bwaaaaah!

  • did y'all know the Wham guys are gay?

  • Actually just George is, Andrew Ridgely has been with Keren Woodward of Bananarama since 1991!

  • whoa you are right!! i am glad they both weren't.

  • Gotta a question, what does DHSS stand for?

  • Department of Health and Social Security

  • The Department of Health and Social Security was a ministry of the UK govt for 20 years (68 - 88) The initials 'DHSS' are still used by the general public to describe the Dept of Work & Pensions or some of the benefits it provides (such as Income Support, or whats better known in North America, welfare).

The initials "DHSS" are recited several times in Wham Rap! as a tongue-in-cheek celebration of wilful unemployment (stickin it to the man by saying "F-it" to working.

    Hope thats helfpul :)

  • @FOJO27 I'd go further and say the whole song is a sign of the times - in 1982 there was massive unemployment in the UK. I can remember in my final year at school (not til '86) being shown how to fill in forms for the DHSS so we didn't lose money. At the time, if you weren't going on to university, it was a given that you'd go "on the dole".

  • Yes, thank you.....I had an idea that was what they were referring to but I wasn't sure how similar or different the British government was to the US...

  • Do you enjoy what you do

    If not just stop

    Don't stay there and rot

  • He is rotting...in his basement on YT uploading vids of someone else playing the guitar. He's a fake, phony and fraudulent!

  • This is my favorite WHAM! song ever!!!! I love how they dance in this video!

  • Mr Average looked shocked when they called him a jerk 1:28

  • The anthem for the lazy LOL!!!!

    DHSS..LOL!!

I love the song though it's good! George rapping LOL!!

  • 2:16 GM really belts it out. Love that part. It shows how powerful his voice is.

  • Lordy it makes me miss the 80's LOVE IT

  • GM IS ON FORM HERE.

  • FANTASTIC!

  • how fucking camp was he how did nobody know he was gay

  • Shirley was hot...little wonder Martin snagged her for his wife.

    Smokin'!!!

  • Helll Yeaaaaa!

  • Love you George and Andrew from a fran forever. You had such a significance in my life that you will never know. Smooches!

  • 0:42 Bananas in pyjamas!

  • I wonder what the backup dancers are up to now! :-D

  • At 3:10 that girl lives in Oulton Broad now.

  • The Blond Lady Shirley is married to Martin Kemp formerly of Spandau Ballet. At last report he was on Eastenders and he also worked with Simone Lahbib (Helen Stewart) on Bad Girls on a show called Family about a British Mob Style Family. The Black Lady Shirley I heard is working in a Candy Shop but I'm not 100% sure. I hope that they came out of it with some money from the early recordings.

  • AWESOME!! Great recession anthem!

  • i love this song xDDD i'm 15 now and My friends and I Rave to this XDDD

  • Oh, I haven't heard this sing since the 80's when I was a teen! Thanks for posting; this was a popular and very fun song at my high school dances!!

  • According to Rob Jovanovic in his 2007 biography of George Michael, the song "depicted the world as they saw it" although it was "hardly a rap as we know it today." The message is that if you're young and unemployed, have fun. Of course, most people who are faced with especially long term unemployment find life a struggle, but youthful optimism certainly paid off for this dynamic duo.

  • what a hot piece of male tottie he was even way back when, wow thanks hot for posting me this one, . . . i was once a wild wham bammer, now i'm just an old crazy chick that peers up George Michaels trouser legs at his recent concerts, ooohhhfff he da beautiful boy, . . . many thanks for uploading this one, it's GREAT, LadySats . . .

  • THe 80's THe Best Decade!!!

  • isn't this 70's?

  • it is 1982

  • Dude, I thought that George was tryin' out for tha Village People. The biker bro. I second that disco play. I wish they still had em' here, Wham, BAM!!! I'll be there.

  • i love this song, makes me get up and dance

  • I remember dancing to this at a disco when I was a kid. Me and my mate had all the moves down to a tee> sad I know but good fun at the time.

  • great quality! ha seems like the 80s all over sweet!

  • My god they were so young! haha!

  • WHY IS THIS SONG DIFFERENT?!?!!?

  • This was the 7" single version that was played on the radio at time of release. Totally different lyrics to the 12" and album version that has subsequently appeared on various compilations.

  • It was from when the single was released in America on 12" vinyl. They remixed it and combined the vocals from the original "Social Mix" and "Unsocial Mix" of the original British single.

  • I like the one that begins with "WHO WHO!"

  • That's "Bad Boys".

  • This is good, Have yall heard of vthov? Search "Vthov Let Me Clear My Throat" This cat is going to be huge. Raw lyrics and he makes his own beats which are also fiyah. See for yourself if you don't believe me.

  • For non-British listeners, 'DHSS' is the Department of Health and Social Security, a government department which paid out 'dole' claims for unemployment benefit. I was claiming the stuff back then!

  • George dated girls exclusively for much of these early Wham almums

  • Not completely true. He's said that his first gay experience was at 19, allegedly around the time the video for "Club Tropicana" was filmed in Ibiza. So he was straight and dating women in public and sleeping around in private with both sexes. Until the end of the decade, when he got into his first serious relationship with a man, was when he fully realized he was gay.

  • Force 10 cheese but I love it for that! More relevant today than its been in a long time methinks. Cheer up people and stop watching the news so much!

  • The backup dancers have a cool smolder, they look like fun girls.

  • why are the dudes wearing caprees? lol

  • The good old days, when George was a real man LOL.

  • the best !! forever !! nothing more !!

  • Was he always gay?

  • No

He dated a Girl in the 80's

  • He's said he felt he was bisexual in his youth and during Wham!, but was never completely sure he was gay until he met his first serious boyfriend in the early 1990's.

  • This is CLASSIC 80s. The dance moves are so horrible that it's great. Good song, for sure!

  • He was a lot more fun, carefree, and lighthearted in Wham! than he is solo. He still makes wonderful music, but he became too self-conscious and too obsessed with production and sound and studiocraft.

  • The only rap you get from George Michael now is the rap on the door of your toilet cubicle.

  • No man is more though than when he has a rat tail and is wearing a leather jacket, capris, and ballet slippers.

  • well said i may start rockin that look lol!!

  • LAWL!!!!!

    What a great video..!

  • the "hip hi-fi" in this vid looks kind of like an ipod :-P

  • The "hip hi-fi" was a cassette player (aka "Walkman") back in the day. Maybe they'll start calling iPods 'hip hi-fi's" now, lol! Would be cool.

  • My favorite part is when he comes out and does that little hand gesture and sings "if you're a pub man" so cute. To the pub!

  • Could be re-released soon the way this country is going.

  • A Fantastic video - brings back memories of the Fantastic Eighties - One of their most memorable tracks - I first heard it being aired in the erstwhile Woolworths and bought it there and then!

  • this was not condoneing anything..it was a feel good song for all of us at the mercy of Thatchers Britain with no jobs, no money and self esteem running at an alltime low and sick and tired of the "why dont you just get a job" folks who thought unemployment could never happen to them but for many it did. what are you gonna do if your down and out...give up or live your life! the dole was never enough money in Britain to do much of anything but we learned to make our own fun and enjoy the day

  • 67GENXER: Good on ya! That was most definitely the spirit of Wham Rap!

  • 67GENXER: I'm sure you've also heard "Come On" by Wham!, also from the "Fantastic" LP. It expands on the "Wham Rap!" ethos, and echoes alot of what you just said in your post. It was sort of like "Wham Rap! Part II."

  • yeah I caught hell for it too, much like alot of the stuff i liked but I always stayed true and whadaya know, most of it's popular now..fickel lot are sheep, they follow each other around doing what each other do. still, wham was incredibly popular just not in my circle of friends. come on everybody, get on with your party and don't let no body say your wrong..or something like that i think. still have my LP Fantastic. on rainy english days I used to listen to club tropicana over and over

  • I love the way he's quite obviously advertising being on the dole XD

endless amusement. such a good song though =D

  • I can't find an mp3 of this version anywhere!

  • I agree with csmit. I HATED this song when I heard it, but it's been my favorite for awhile now. Pretty funny. And now i want to learn the little dance moves they have going on when they sing the chorus. It looks like so much fun...

  • CRYSTALSUNDANCE: Back in `86, I was the only one of my circle of friends who liked Wham! (they were my favourite group), and I caught MUCH hell for it! :-) Nevertheless, I was able to get one of my best friends, and two girls we liked, to recreate this video in my garage from time to time. They loved it, but wouldn't admit to it. Why else would they have done it time after time? :-) It was alot of fun, looking back.

  • CLARKBELL: And he was only 19!

  • i love wham and george michael

  • FONKAYYY!

  • he's got street cred imo

  • no, he has street credibility

  • it's the same innit

  • what the heck are you talking about?

  • what confuses me that george michael can sing a song the subtext of which is picking up men in a welfare line for gay sex, then people being surprised when he was outed

  • i am on the dole whambam lol i love this song :)

  • the first time i heard this song i was like omg this is a stupid song but now i listen to it like 20 times a day i love the beat thx for uploading this song

  • the first time i heard this song i absolutley hated it

thought it was really embarrasing for george

but i have to say its really grown on me n is now one of my favourite songs

    lol pretty ironic

  • First ever rap by a white dude or in the UK at least

  • looks like that was filmed in Richmond, Surrey... i recognise the zebra crossing outside richmond station at 0.43 lol

slight clue just before from the milk float with "Richmond" on it :-)

  • I have been taken these guys advise since 1983 now i am unemployable who wants to be a slave anyway..yipeee!!

  • One of the biggest employers in the uk god blees the dhss

  • DHSS Stands for The Department Health and Social Security in the UK where you would go to get your dole money if you didn't have a job.

  • So in other words he's chanting "Welfare! Welfare!"

    How ghetto.

  • Every time I go to the Holiday Thriftway (former Penn Fruit) in Philadelphia, I feel more like a loser and a bum on welfare than a paying customer. Not a good feeling.

  • That's a common feeling these days, but then again, there's A LOT of songs that are more ironic/sarcastic than they sound i.e. "Future so bright, I gotta wear shades," "Rockin' in the Free World" and ESPECIALLY "Afternoon Delight." The upside is George Michael blasted nearly all of his WHAM songs anyway.

  • I wonder how many people know what DHSS is?

  • Yes I wonder what it stand for?

  • the dole!

  • love the jet black guy with the hip hi-fi

  • I had never noticed that lyric until this video!

  • i love george michael it doesn't matter the orient he's just awsome.but what's with the DHSS? why do they say that? does it mean something?

  • George is so handsome.! <3

  • If only being on the dole was actually this fun...:(

  • Bloody sponging immigrants......! Only kidding! Love ya George!

  • best song..eveer<3

  • This version is totaly different then the one on albums!! was this the single version????

  • Yes. This was the "Social Mix". Most of the vocals that ended up on the album version, which was the "Special U.S. Remix", was from the "Unsocial Mix".

  • Song of the century! That is what this song is!!!

  • George Michael was not only the first big white emcee in the game, but the best emcee of all time. He should've done more rapping, he could probably beat Rakim in a battle.

  • 2:54 lmao..

  • Oh my goodness, this brings back memories!! I used to roll up my pants so they would look like capris...tee hee...I loved the 80's... the music was the best!!!

  • I was 19 when this came out and was one of the "benefit gang". Almost all my friends were unemployed and on the dole, as were 90% of the kids my age in the town where I lived. I loved this song; it felt like we were thumbing our nose at the government and Thatcher that had messed everything up. It was definitely tongue in cheek but also true. You had to make the best of things.

  • daem origional white rapper 0_0

  • The Reason Everyone Hates White People

  • You do know that the whole thing is supposed to be deliberately tongue-in-cheek, right?
