  • Was Borg really great in this match or was Connors not so good?

Its an odd match because this is when Borg was burnt out. In fact this is the last major tournament win he ever had. Connors had taken Borg to 5 sets at Wimbledon of all places earlier in the year. Connors had nearly dominated Borg at the USO in previous years. After this match Borg got beat handily by McEnroe. Everything leading up to and following the match says Connors should have won this. Yet he got beat handily.

  • Their strokes look so different compared to the modern strokes of todays tennis, it is quite interesting to compare them.

  • Thanks so much for posting these. This is just a suggestion, in the future, could please post videos directly from the VCR through a wire? You seem to have posted these videotaping directly from the TV like a kinescope

Sorry for being critical and negative. And if you can't, I understand. But if you could in the futre, would it be possible? Thanks Just a suggestion

    Thanks.

  • @wilx218x RF Both had the game to beat each other. Their record agianst each other was 7 to 7, equal. So I feel if Bjorn Borg had stayed, he would have beaten John McEnroe eventually. Both would have won some and lost some It's just he was burned out and didn't want to continue. yes, he was probably frustrated losing to John McEnroe for a couple of matches, but he could have eventually won. Plus the newer rackets were coming.

  • RF

Why Bjorn Borg did you retire. I know you could have won if you had stayed in it. It took Martina Navratilova till 1983 to win the U.S. Open, she persevered. Why Bjorn????? If only he had persevered. R If he was hitting the ball that hard with this racket, just think how hard he could have hit it since the new rackets were just a couple of years away

    Thanks

    Peace

  • I remember watching this match as a kid, and thinking Jimmy was gonna beat him. He almost knocked Bjorn off in the semis at Wimbledon, and was playing very well that summer. But Borg was absolutely on fire this day. His serve was amazing. His returns were rockets and it seemed like he was as confident, for one match, as I had ever seen him.

  • Borg was awesome, hope the whole match will be on soon!!!

  • Watch March1st when the second oart will be uploaded as well as the last to segments of the 1976 Wimby-final...

  • Really, what a shame. Even though Borg was defeated by Mac in Wimby and the uso 1981, his tennis was even better than his golden era. His shots were really agressive!. What a shame. I´m sure he could win the us open if he wouldn´t retire so early.

  • Good upload! First time I've seen any points from this match.

  • Borgs last Grand Slam Turnament, and also the last victory:)

Here Borg was no.1 but Mcenroe take over the place after winning the final

  • who beat lendl, what round?

who did mac play in the semis?

  • Lendl was defeated by a Gerulaitis on fire. Vitas was also extremely close to crushing McEnroe in five thrilling sets in the SF. McEnroe was very lucky to not have face Lendl or Connors at USO that year -- both of them being 5-0 in H2H with John McEnroe that and they loved playing at the USO where they were great champs. Borg did Mac's dirty work in 1981...

  • so did borg/vitas beat lendl & connors @wimbledon that year?

who did mac beat in the qtrs/semis?

  • ...wow ...this is great ...brings back great memories ...very inspiriing
