dude, you are what's going on in my life! (minus collage) the whole converting an old rusty 80's bike into a fixed gear and all the problems you've gone through to get that special feeling that you have DONE IT! (I'm still not there) but yeah what ever, i just saw your dairy and it made my day even better!!!
this video was posted over 2 years ago now....i sure hope you didnt give up...i happen to have the exact same bike (just a 73' instead of 82') and i got it about a week ago.....i've had the same thoughts/problems you've had, but it's honestly upsetting to see that you didn't finish.
i'm glad i watched these videos before disassembling the bike...because i was starring at the bike for a while too wondering, 'how dee fook do you get this chain/pedal off?"
I've been working on mine for three months and ran into a lot of the same problems you did. seeing as how this video was posted over a year ago I guess you threw in the towel. My last hurtle is some new rims, but I was planning on using my old ones in the meantime. I can't get the fucking freewheel off for the life of me. and I have to break the chain, which I haven't done yet because it's just noisy. Get back to it dude.
1. the frame should have been totally sand-blasted, then primed, then painted, except not with krylon. you need industrial strength lacquers to adhere properly to older steel frames.
2. tools: get a bottom bracket tool if you plan on doing this again. don't beat bike components to death, donate them to a collective.
3. wheel sets are crucial in conversions. you ALWAYS need new wheels when converting from geared road to fixed. the cogs and chainwheels are entirely different.
Ha HA HA "for all of you who said don't pain't the bike don't Paint the bike, well fuck you I did it anyway" Best thing I've ever heard on youtube lol
Very funny in a personal way for me, as I went through the exact same process last year for a bit of fun and to learn about bikes, made many of the same mistakes too.
BTW, the colour you are painting the bike seem to be (or very close to) British racing green, which as a Londoner, ups the awesomeness of your project no end!! Keep up the good work, the first time you ride it will be an unforgettable experience, trust me...
LOL, yo these videos are killing me bro. I can honestly say I am laughing with you and not at you. I just started this same process yesterday and after similar trials and tribulations I slowly figured out how the thing came apart. who knew things where reverse threaded and special tools can be purchased haha. keep it up, I'll try to do the same.
ive watched all the videos.. your halarious i was considering converting mine to be fixed gear like all the other cool kids at my campus but I probably never will get around to it. Thanks for the vids
man, i appreciate what you're doing here. once that beast is done, you're gunna have such a huge feeling of self worth and that bike is gunna be special. slacking off is cool too.. finish it whenever like i'm sure you will. the green paint looks pretty nice. keep up the slow-paced good work. i can also appreciate the fact that you're not just taking it to the bike shop and paying them to do it...you're dad is gunna think it's sweet i bet
you got to get busy man. I'm going to do the same thing. I've learn through your recorded experiences, thanks. But man I hope mine will be done before school starts. MAybe a week.
Yeah the job can be done pretty quickly...of the months its gone on for me...naturally I don't sit around working on it...I simply can't afford to finish it right now...but when its done, I plan on keeping the fixed world updated ha.
this is so epic, when you mentioned Sheldon I got goosebumps like you were going to find Gandolf or some shit

would that paint be more expencive? i going to be painting my bike pretty soon. and can i just leave my BB on and tape it off?
coleyounger559 2 years ago
haha i laugh, painting is not your specialty, if you knew anything you would've primed the poor thing after sanding it before painting it green....
