The difference they're saying is that there is no dice rolling as in those games you've named. This is a shooter with roleplaying elements instead of the other way around which has been what the other games are. We'll have to see if that really makes that much of a difference.

It's the angle they're coming from. They're starting from a shooter angle and adding RPG elements, which hasn't been done before. It's a stretch and they're only doing it for marketing though.

Role-Playing/Shooter genre was created long time before Fallout 3 and Bioshock too. I think one of the first Role-Playing/Shooter games was system shock, but the best is of course Dues Ex. But I think Gearbox (Borderlands devolper) almost reinvented the Role-playing/Shooter gener with Borderlands becuase it looks and feels so unique.

the length of time the game has been around has nothing to do with the game itself. I determine a game by how much I enjoy it, not how much credibility it has. Whether or not you enjoy a game is purely opinion, and you cant really say anything until you've played both.

Honestly, they are both post apocalyptic games. That's where the similarity ends. Fallout is an epic RPG, Borderlands is a fun shoot em up to play with friends and show off the awesome gun you found. both are fun, no one stole from anybody.

The post apocalyptic setting was used before, and it will be used again by other games.

It's not post apocalyptic. It takes place on a desolate planet. The enviornment looks like it would be though. Borderlands is much better than Fallout 3, because it's giant selection of guns makes the whole thing feel so customizable and free. Plus, it's a blast to play online co-op.

The reason they say they are the first is because fallout 3 was an RPG. it was primarily an RPG and added a little bit of shooter. Borderlands is a shooter primarily with a little RPG. borderlands is a shooter with loot and character progression. it is a shooter with more weapons and loot than any RPG. that is why it's a first.

and all gameplay and story elements have been preserved. : )
