hm... with Unity it could be a great distro- but there are some drawbacks in ubuntu:
1. lack of support of Delta packages- that could save up to 94% of downloading during updates/upgrades /i can confirm that: although in most cases savings are about 80%/
2. lack of support of LVM/raid during installation from livecd
3. pure security- it would be better to have selinux properly configured
@5british5 i read an article from OMG Ubuntu and they said that the Creative Suite from Adobe will be on Linux in the future. so, its that and games, and i can gtfo win7
@kurrator1 This new Unity for Natty Narwhal is much better than the Netbook Remix version of Maverick. There's a lot of improvements and new features. I have used both Unity and Gnome Shell, and I find both of them interesting. Unity gives more room for my small screen netbook. However, the only disappointing thing is, they remove the Alt + F2 run box and replace it with something like the search box. We're not able to copy/paste anything on it.
Here's my 2 cents I have upgraded to 11.04 beta the interface is a lot different to what I have gotten used to and functions a lot like my android tablet I would have to say that due to the popularity of the Android OS this interface was created I have only had it for 2 days now and it has frozen once each day I had fell asleep with a video in full screen and when I woke up the computer was frozen did a hard power off today I left a video paused and went to work came home froze again.aspire5610z
People are dumb and claiming to be good linux users. Stop being assholes cause you don't like change and actually pay attention to your damn login screen. Good you don't like it, but you just telling the world how dumb you are when you can switch the session at the login screen. STFU about going back.
@TeruMikami2345 Still, I can't understand why I lot of people dislike Unity. It is good, isn't it? It's beautiful and much better than the Netbook Remix interface..
@Programmer5555 much better than the netbook remix in 10.10, the side panel was stuck there taking up sapce, now unity looks smooth, it looks nice, and plaus its convenient with the full keyboard control, with gnome, i always installed GnoMenu since it was easy to use, but it was missing keyboard control, but the new dash is nice and simple to use, if u can use Win7 or OSX, u can use Ubuntu 11.04
@TeruMikami2345 Yes. For small screen device such as netbooks, Unity gives even more advantage to be compared to GNOME3. Just wait for it. It may not be a smart move for now, but it will improve..
@Programmer5555 yea, im using the final ubuntu 11.04 atm, and it runs like a charm on my netbook, and my full laptop, the intergration of the netbook and desktop was a smart move for them
Way too many clicks. Does the term "productivity" ring a bell to those who brought the Unity interface to Ubuntu? That is not Linux for human beings anymore, just a fancy toy for small kids. Shame..
to all the naysayers on unity, 2 WORDS, "Forward thinking" you all sound like the guys that still use windows xp because change frightens you or something, and btw vista was crap but all i'mma say is this is what i call forward thinkin, a unique desktop experience is what ubuntu needs and Gnome wasn't cutting it for me, If you don't like it downgrade if not theres enough other linux variants that use gnome go use that. You just mad cuz your grown up boy seems like he was just born the other day
Christ, it's not fused. You can easily switch back to the classic gnome from the desktop or get any other desktop environment from the Software Center. Also the old Ubuntu desktop technically wasn't theirs, it was a slightly modified version of Gnome.
I like 11.04, but not the change in menu bar. It is clumsy and requires more clicks to get where you want. I installed it in free VNware under Ubuntu 9.10. Firefox in 4.0 did much the same thing, I checked with 5 of my friends who use ff and 4 + me went with Chrome and the other to IE. How this is not a turnoff to a whole liot of users.
@LikeLinux I tried in Fedora 15 which has it by default. If you search for "How to install vanilla GNOME 3 in Maverick" you can find a tutorial on how to install it in 10.10. I haven't tried it myself though.
@WarriorIng64 Really? How? I found that switching between applications is very slow. And together with the poor dual monitor support, not existing configuration possibilities and lack of hotkeys my productivity definitely decreased.
@paldepind I'll admit I can't speak about the dual monitor support (which supposedly got better in recent commits from what I've read in the log) nor hotkeys, since I typically use neither. However, between the enhanced Alt+Tab, workspaces and using the dash in the overview, I found application switching in GNOME3 to be the fastest in any DE I've used up to now. Also, some configuration options exist, but they're mostly hidden in gconf for now.
@WarriorIng64 Using workspaces in Gnome shell was so painful that I actually didn't use them at all while I was using Gnome 3. And I typically use workspaces all the time.
@paldepind I use workspaces all the time as well, and I actually found them improved in GNOME3. I missed automatic workspace handling whenever I went back from my GNOME3 laptop to my Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. Having more unused workspaces open on my GNOME2.x seems to slow stuff down for me, so it was also a good feature to me performance-wise. The Ctrl+Alt+Up/Down keyboard shortcuts for switching between workspaces are still there too.
@LikeLinux I don't think they provide the way, at least for right now. I first saw unity and I got some of this very strange feeling to this new desktop... then i used it and i think i like it, because it gives you a wider screen space for your application, especially for netbooks.
I think you can't hate it because it's the future of Ubuntu, if you hate it now, you'll hate it forever.
@Programmer5555 I think a lot of people dislike these newer interfaces because they start using them with the expectation that they'll work in exactly the same way as the old one did. By that, I mean people have habits and some find it harder to adjust than others, and many people will give up in 15 minutes if they're overwhelmed by the differences before they can get used to it. Just my own theory.
@WarriorIng64 Well, you might be right. However, after having a bit of disliking, I suddenly found this innovative new UI beautiful and attractive. It's actually not that difficult to use, once you know some basic operations on it. Well, most people learn about new things very quickly, like me myself, to speak honestly. Whatever it is, I do appreciate Ubuntu developers for introducing us to this Unity interface.Trust me, they will work hard to improve it.
@Programmer5555 I agree. Although I still prefer GNOME3 at this point in time, Unity now looks and works a lot better than it did in Maverick's Netbook Edition. And I prefer both interfaces to GNOME2.x. I'm also a "fast learner" and I enjoy figuring out these interfaces by experimenting; I just wanted to point out that not everyone is the same way, which is why I think there are a lot of haters out there at the moment.
Not sure if I'll like it as much as the current old GNOME, but I definitely prefer Unity over GNOME3, taking away my minimize buttons be fightin' werds!
Interface is similar to my old Macintosh. I think the new interface in a step back. Only time will tell if i am wrong. I like to keep key strokes to a min.
@billisnice And I like to keep mouse movements to a min. Just pressing the Action (Windows) key lets you immediately start typing for what you want: apps, files, etc. Of course Ubuntu previously had shortcuts and applications to help facilitate this in the past, but I like the way that this is going..
as much as i love ubuntu and improvements... this gui has to many inconsistencies and seems much more difficult than our good old desktop. Just try to imagine how you can teach someone about the features of the unity shell... they will have a hard time to understand that : a) buttons are moving to different bars b) when and why they should click on the ubuntu logo top left and other stuff... :(
