emmanuel will never be a gypsy playerbecause its not in his soul!! but he likes to think that he is better than anyone else... he is an ashole .. over does everything!!
well they are obviously cheating, I know for a fact that Stephan uses growth hormone, and Emmanuel uses both EPO and steroids, so, anybody could do it if they wanted. I mean look at the size of those fingers!!!!!
Once you begin to compare musicians you loose the whole point of music. It's like returning a special gift someone gave you because you think you can get something better, it's a gift and it's called music and if anyone should be thankful is the listener!
Jeez - I wish the cameraman had moved so that guy's head wasn't in the way!!! By the way all you 'who's better than who' debaters - it's just music! Who cares about who's fastest, or who's more like Django, or more original? It's about having fun - and that's all these guys are doing, which is what makes it great entertainment.
No serious legit classical performance from any guitarist of the gypsy style equals a "world class" violinist or pianist. Fast scales and arpeggios is very fundamental and very easy to accomplish on the guitar; hence the great number of young shred guitarist. Same goes for Paco, Al and John trio; a trio of three fast picking guitarist playing bursts of scales and very few arpeggios. It's all another form of professional wrestling - lots of fun to listen too!! It's not great improv.
On my website you may upload a video of the first ever performance captured on video of Paganini's Perpetuo at 192 bpm on guitar by me in 1992; without distortion and picking each note correctly. It was first published at the Great Guitar Show in Valley Forge PA on video and was witnessed by the masses present. The remarks were who is that?
It's not a head cutting contest, bud... They're just having fun jamming. I think they play a Nirvana tune next though, so that should put a stopper on your guitar-hero-itis
I have a hard time believing people are actually debating "who's got the biggest one" on a video like this...
Music isn't a competition, there's no "best player". What we see here is sheer awesomeness, only 1 person out of 10 000 000 can play this, so stop being silly and just enjoy the music.
@usernamesuckagain i hate to correct your math but if only 1 in 10 000 000 could play this, it would mean 700 people total around the world were able. The number of extraordinarily talented guitarists of this caliber and greater are actually far more numerable. It took me a few years to realize this myself.
tommy doesn't play swing guitar. as he said he's just flirting with it, but he's intelligent enough to adapt his right hand to this rude style.. with joscho beside, he has to do the impossible..
no doubt about that!! tommy is a true artist, so he can adapt himself to any situation. but there's a difference between playing a style and thinking this style. while tommy tries to swing, and he does it very well, joscho thinks and feels his swing.. anyway, all respect for tommy which remains AMAZING!!!!
Do not misunderstand my comment, Stephan is gifted enough for world class performance any day ay,but should (like John Jorgenson did) play a wider range of styles to not get stuck in gypsy jazz alone. Most likely he does this in private so why not in public?? Djangos style was based in cultural reflection and finger damage (ao) and Joscho should keep adapting in exploring the soundscape of his own present surroundings. If not no point Id say as it could boost his output to that of a legend.
well id still say he is wasting his talent on playing Django material. technically he is world class but music is more about projection than competition. Rosenberg delivered a softer touch and approach that made the modern version of this style listenable. To get good Joscho should leave gypsy music for some time and instead focus on shred metal and soft jazz. Not kidding, please join in discussion here if anyone has notice the same mismatch between tech and detail.
i always like to hear a good shred, makes me wanna pick up a guitar, then again so does gypsy jazz, I applaud you for your passion. We all find our place in the world, give JS a chance he's in his 20's.
I know, hes also one of the most talented and skilled guitarist ever seen and could go a long way on the instrument. Not complaining on what he does (which is in many ways marvelous), but he should leave out some of the Django-copy licks to find his own voice/style. Kill your darlings they say, to move on (even in this genre) it is important to adapt and incorporate hint of all styles. He needs a touch of smooth Wes/Lee attack for softer parts and also expand his shred tendencies.

I left his concert after 20 minutes 2 nights ago because I was not enjoying it. I found that his tone was way too smooth for the genre. The notes were rounded where they needed that thinner gypsy jazz tone. Dad was playing a regular steel string which seemed odd. He also failed to project as a performer verbally or musically. What I got was slick, well played
and entirely devoid of feeling. I just found the whole thing boringly technical and uninvolving so I left as Joscho fixed a string break.

Thank u. Technically he is a near perfect guitarist but should leave this style to find a better suited 'voice' or 'soul' for his playing. Also the django-copy-licks is not of use. If he changes direction he can become world class but as now he rather play shred metal as mentioned.
i agree with you even tho everybody seems to disagree. many gypsy guitar players are simply copying django style or the style of the other gypsy player next to them, and well, it lacks some serious imagination. if you hear a gypsy guitar solo without knowing who plays it, youll find it hard to discern whos playing, could be birelli, joscho, romane, etc, while if you listen to a joe pass or george benson guitar solo, itll just be simply obvious, because they are so unique
I disagree entirely. You can completely tell the difference between a Stochelo Rosenberg, a Bireli Lagrene, and a Tchavalo Schmitt solo. It takes one listen to J'attendrai with Tchavalo, Stochelo, and Dorado to be able to see the differences. There are three completely different approaches to gypsy jazz in one song!
Well of course, Joscho is a world class guitarist no doubt. All he need to do is to lay off the Django-inspiration/licks a little. He got what it takes to become a legend but it takes a change of approach. Django was an inventer (remember) and took tunes of his time trough a morphosis. Any tune can become swing jazz by turning around the chords a bit etc.
Guitar is the language and gypsy jazz only the subject. Please listen and change your talk! This road has already been paved. Django was an explorer not an imitator. Do yourself the favor to stay off the Hot Club repertoire and play what reflects the present times! Such skills could and should be used to a broader set of styles and audience. Good luck. (please note this comment is not about the talent but of waste of opportunities for no need).
you're all retarded and apparantly don't understand the complications involved in transferring styles across genres. they're both insane just because they can do this. I would rather watch Joscho, jazz is much more freely constructed than most other genres. and metal doesn't require talent. so i'm pretty sure neither of them would have any problem.
thats what makes him the greatest guitar player in the world. he can do anything, he has not just practiced blues licks and all. and maybe if he have, he was still born to play the guitar. all of the guitarists thats kinda "forced" to the guitar for some reason, can only play one type of music most of the time. tommy is the fucking man.
that persons head is in the way! and that guy is way too amazing! tommy and him in a guitar off- that was class! and fair play to the bass and rythem guitarist, they were pretty hot two but tommy and guitarist with crazy solos stole the show! munya!:)
Nobody notices that guy in the background playing perfedt rhythm. He's amazing in his own right. I can't imagine his fingers aren't bleeding. Wow. What a great set of videos. Thank you!
soo amazing, BUT... how hard are chromatic runs?? like beside their brilliant chops i heard a lot of just chromatic things played a 90435024 MPH. thats the only thing I would have them change.
ya know a few lessons and they might have something IF they practice. Seriously yet another dimension to Tommy who's already a gifted musician...play on brother.
you should hear him play nuages. he played knoxville a few months ago, and he played a radio show, and before the show he was warming up with nuages, it was by far the best version i've ever heard, next to django's of course.
A quite wonderful example of superlative and exciting guitar playing from both players. Their styles compliment each other as Tommy's regular playing contains many fast gypsy style runs but with a blues feel.
I just ordered a CD with Chet's version, I simply have to hear the original. I just can't stop smiling from listening to this tune over and over. Some mindblowing playing, that's for sure.
Seems like Tommy spent some time practicing gypsy jazz. Remember seeing some mediocre efforts before, but this is actually really nice. Joscho's great as always.
Thanks for posting! I love Tommy playing Django stuff. He has often mentioned Django as being the greatest guitar player ever and I do agree. Not just because of the technique, but especially because of the fun & entertainment & groove. Tommy must be at least half-gypsy to play this! Joscho's trio is great!
HAHA If you don't think it's a cutting contest every time two guitarists sit down together, you don't play. It's healthy and it's fun.

Thanks 7r
