Another amusing thing when you are at high speed the natural reaction of the body is to tense up and super concentrate not heavy breathing at a slow pace, listen to his breathing.....Another yawn
I think the issue here is that in order to put a prius in neutral, you need to hold the gear lever in the neutral position for a second or two, not just tap it into neutral like a normal car. This is done to prevent you from putting it into neutral by accident. Every single driver on the road should know how to put their car in neutral. If you don't know how to put your car in neutral, you should have never been allowed to drive.
James Sikes orchestrated this fake "runaway" Prius incident with the skill of any con artist. He hit the freeway only hours after Toyota's press conference. He bided enough time with the 911 operator so that the news hounds can converge on his story. Sikes doesn't even fit the profile of a typical Prius driver. No video footage by the CHP of the incident. A mysterious Border Patrol car nearby. No explanation by Sikes of where he was driving. All of this spells one word - FRAUD.
Notice he can talk but cannot respond to taking it out of gear and does not respond to any suggestions for stopping the car... faker...... He wanted out of his lease ....
@linkspider Ya think?!!! I mean, seriously, did anyone notice this scam artist's fuckin' Corvette Owner's Club Of America jacket?!! The cop should have taken one look at that JACKET & smelled something fishy going on!!!!!
@landyachtfan79 I would understand if this was some in experienced driver but not this guy also the fact he was trying to get out of his lease prior to this.
All this particular guy had to do was take one foot of his accelerator and the other one that was slightly touching the brake pedal to make sure the cops could see the brake lights on.
I bet he would have stopped that car in two seconds if there was a tractor trailer stopped in the road in front of him
I like how Toyota reps.. Try to make it sound like the driver's fault because he didn't put it in nutral, or use the E Brake.. But if Toyota knew how to make legit cars that don't f-ck up. This would have never happen to the guy in the 1st place..
If the accelerator was stuck down that indicates a mechanical problem. That they would be unable to replicate the situation makes that seem somewhat unlikely. That he didn't put it in neutral or simply shut the car off does indicate a degree of panic. That a problem exists is almost certain. That this was such a case is less clear.
Even though there is reason given this man's reputation and past to think he was faking it, I highly doubt if it came down to police helping to stop the car that it was fake.
You can bet someone paid him to do this, goal get Japan to buy US savings Bonds for this piece of shit government and Wall STREET Banks! Anyone else would have turned off the ignition. Anybody over the age of 40 can remember having engine throttle stick at some time, police staged a fake bank robberry in baltimore last week. I guess ff terror isn't enough!
The guy should get a ticket at least. Someone that is so stupid as not to think to put the car in neutral or to turn it off, BEFORE CALLING 911, is a danger to everyone else on the road.
William Sweet says he went into business with Sikes, together opening up a paralegal services company called "AAA California Aid" in 1997. Sweet operated the main office and Sikes ran one in Los Banos, California. Sweet alleges numerous incidents of fraud and theft involving Sikes led him to dissolve their partnership, including an incident in which Sikes sent an employee to break into the main office to steal payment records.
Being a Chevy enthusiast it does not matter how weird it may sound but I'd rather support Toyota than Obama socialism plan to nationalize US auto industry and get rid of foreign competitors. If this policy continues with orchestrated media support of cases like "Runaway Prius" and others quite soon US companies will be crippled so much they won't be able to compete with even Russian auto makers, not to mention Japanese. So this policy is hitting America back like a boomerang!
He's a fake. And this is either the dumbest fox news station in the world or they just have bad information. Because we all know the floor mats don't have shit to do with anything. It was on the news almost a month ago when they found the memo that said the "floormat recall" was just a cover up
A 61 year old realtor (likely OUT of WORK in the DEPRESSED SoCal market) can have the time and dexterity to pull manually on his gas pedal (in another 911 segment) but refuses to answer the operator's enquiry if he shifted to neutral?? Something fishy here. Shifting is EASIER than pulling on the gas pedal. He wanted a media event. Shifting to neutral would have ended this before it started.
I start hearing people in debt talking about getting a 2009 or 2008 toyota just to have intentional accident and then get toyota to pay them Millions of Dollar out of it.
This guy is clearly full of shit. Any Corvette driver would know what to do in that situation. Jim Sikes is a scam-artist who is trying to use his Prius to acquire a check from Toyota. This is the same Prius that is 5 months behind on payments, driven by a man who is close to $700,000 in debt. This has "stinky smelly fish" odor smeared all over it. Shame on Rhonda and Shame on Jim.
Jim Sikes is bankrupt - he leased the car for $600 mth because of bad credit - got the car from Bob Baker - same dealer as the 911 Lexus -O'l Jim will be charged with Fraud soon - you heard it here first ! on carquestions
The Toyota recalls have been fully overblown and when they are done investigating this scam-artist better known as Jim Sikes, I hope the prosecutors bury his ass in court.
Don't people realize that if they mash the brake to the floor at the outset the car will come to a stop? How hard is this? Brakes are more powerful than engines as long as you don't overheat them first. People need to learn about cars...but then maybe they wouldn't drive electric ones.
This dude did not slam on his brakes. He's simply trying to get paid and when they discover how much of a scam-artist this guy really is.. He's really going to wish he killed himself during this stunt.
it's common sense and if the driver doesnt know his or her car they shouldnt be driving and im pretty sure that every idiot in this world know how to turn off a car
The the power switch is electronically controlled, it's a button, therefore, he wasn't able to turn off the car because it couldn't turn off... Anybody would have tried that.
Think of the car's electronic as Windows Vista that crashes... except it doesn't have a reset button.
That is why the 911 operator was telling him for 20 minutes exactly HOW to turn off the car by holding down the button for 3 seconds. And how at any time, shifting into neutral would stop the acceleration. Listen to the whole 23 minute audio of the 911 call... once again FOX leaves critical information out.
The only thing this guy was trying to dislodge was his lease agreement..

Sorry folks I have done my investigation its not a mechanical issue its a lease issue....
How to get out of a Prius lease, stick your foot on the gas stick your foot on the brakes call the cops, methods my ass he wanted out of his lease/
linkspider 1 year ago
I realize this is common sense (or should be) but If this happens and you cannot manipulate the pedal with your foot to "unstick it"....
1. Do not try to lean down, taking your eyes off the road to "unstick" the pedal.
2. Do NOT try to brake with a stuck accelerator, you'll just burn up your brake pads.
3. Put the car into neutral (N)
4. Start braking and move to the side of the road.
5. Find a safe place to pull off the road and stop.
6. Turn off the key / shut the engine off.
