These men, Dr. Saputo and Byron Belitsos, are on the right track and I hope many cities will follow their example. I agree on taxing junk food and I totally agree that schools need to serve only nutritious food. Kids can bring lunch from home if they choose, but Mom and Dad will pay high prices for their junk. We pack our kids organic food because the school food is unhealthy, but WE are paying the high price because organic food is more expensive. It should be the other way around.
It goes both ways, as the majority of health science is also lacking in evidence. There's not enough evidence or incentives to convince the government to put more resource into researching for prevention.
Not to mention the health industry have been setting up guilt traps on themselves so as to not make themselves look anything like the medical industry, ie. not driven by money. They really have nothing much to hold tightly onto aside from an "educating people" industry.
Big govt. vs small govt.? The problem is neither. Big govt. is a bad thing when their policies help the wealthy, which they do, mainly because we allow corporate influence(including campaign contributions) and "the revolving door". So your problem is corporate influence. Those who think small govt. is a bad thing, what do you do when corporations get so big they have more power than the govt?
It seems we are all on the same page (too much corporate power) so unite instead of blaming eachother.
The local kitchen police, what else would we expect from California; the Nanny State. People have been leaving the land of Fruits and Nuts in ever growing numbers for years.
If we can't wrestle our healthcare system out of the hands of private for-profit insurance, what makes you think the government is going to take on the various corporate food giants selling us chemically laced food. We have been trying to get rid of Aspertame for thirty years, it's in everything !
The gov subsidizes corn production. It also subsidizes many industries that pollute our air, water, and land. Now the gov wants to control health care?! Are you kidding me?! It's the gov interference in all of our affairs that creates this mess. Why in the world would anyone want more gov interference is beyond me. The definition of insanity is to continue to do the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.
you have a top down health care system now. the insurance companies. These people are only interested in producing massive profits at the expensive of providing care. They make they bones by denying care. Single payer--one entity, Non-profit system. Everyone pays into the same pool. Cut the middle man out. Do you really care that much about the poor CEOS? They don't give a sh** about you and me. For real. Oh year, mass media--they lie. don't believe the hype about gov run. Scare tactic
Open your eyes. The insurance companies have so much control precisely because the gov has sold out to them. Do you really expect the gov to do you any favors when it comes to your health care?! There is no such thing as a gov run non-profit system. I simply do not support any system that forces me to participate. I'm sick and tired of gov interference in my life. My life is my responsibility, not yours or anyone else. Don't expect me to jump for joy because you buy into this nonsense.
Look, no one is talking about some neo con fantasy about goverment "control". The monied interests are trying to scare people like you in me away from what actually works and is cost effective. Single Payer. I know professional expatriates living here, and believe me, the universal coverage they have in Canada, France and the UK is 10,000 times better. It may not be perfect, no system is, but it's cheaper and everyone is covered. And they have complete choice.
You may not want to talk about it, but that's the reality - gov control. And it's gov control that allows the moneyed interests to push all the buttons. I know Canadians living here that don't want anything to do with their system of health care. What I don't buy into is gov control of my life, and my decisions about my health care. That's what works for me and what is cost effective for me. I'm the single payer, paying for me, not for you, by you, or up to you.
I have worked on both sides of the border... Canadian system has flaws, but it's miles better compared to the US. Any system is flawed government or not.
I picked my excellent doctor, our obesity rates are much lower, all our health standards starts are better than you, 0 deaths from non coverage (compared to 3000 a year in the states). We make our own health choices, but are encouraged by our government and doctors to live better.
the gov. doesnt have to ban anything but just force the industry to be transparent and non-manipulative - colour coded food, explicit visiple price lists for fast food, no mass discount at restaurants, strict limitations on advertisment - this leads to more freedom and health awareness
and this way the gov. doesnt intrude into peoples freedoms but into the practices of the corporations, as it should! protecting the corp. from this is what ppl like limbaugh are really about
Good point about the sin tax. Most Americans are comfortable with taxes on Alcohol and Tobacco. These are items that are not necessary but luxuries. Fast food is actually not cheap. Preparing your own meals is the cheapest way to feed yourself. So, positioning the tax on fast food as a sin tax designed to pay for the side-effects is good.
Why don't we stop trying to punish each other? Forgot the "sin" tax. You're bad. I'm good. Let's stop this crap. Let's have a single payer with a broad comprehensive wellness program. Let's stop this shit once and for all. I care about you. You care about me. Let's just get this done. Single Payer.
First, to reduce instances of disease related to these activities. THey are called sin taxes but I do not believe alcohol and tabacco are bad. I just believe that the tax can influence behavior. It is not about punishment but about trying to change lifestyles.
Further, if we are all responsible for each other then we need to be responsible for what our behavior does. This is the reason for the tax. Smoking, for instances, puts a strain on the system. There should be a tax.
The popular herbal extract St. Johns wort is more effective at treating the symptoms of depression than any antidepressant drug, and has fewer side effects, researchers from the Centre for Complementary Medicine in Munich have concluded.
In a study published by the Cochrane Library, the researchers compiled the results of 29 prior trials, involving a total of 5,489 participants who were randomly assigned either St. Johns wort, a placebo, tricylclic antidepressants or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to treat mild to moderately severe depression. All studies were double-blind, meaning that neither patients nor researchers knew what kind of treatment each participant was receiving."
Ok, so it didn't work for me so that means I have to take that no matter what? And yes, I used it for about 6 months. I'm not saying don't take St. Johns. Heck if it works for someone, awesome. But I'm sure I'm going to hear what an idiot I am and how I'm supporting big pharma, lol.
Taxes on junk food at the state level is okay idea but keep the federal government out. They shouldn't intrude on the state rights. They have gained too much power since their 9/11 attack.
How about a Federal Charter which indicates what points a program has to meet and then the States implement their own program as they see fit?
This is the model used in Canada. It allows for Provincial Rights to be kept intact and the Fed does not have a say over the Provinces (that's how our health care system works in Canada.. it is provincial not federal).
yeah, america should know best what leaving the federal government out leads to, "china town"-alaska, only recently a certain illinois governor, the state level is much more susceptible to corruption, and america is one of the most corrupt countries in the western world, its basically an established part of governance and political practice
Stop blaming people man. Man, why can't you just love your brother? Your sister? Let's change the way we think about health care and wellness. Americans are working hard, longer but for less than they did 30 years ago. People are sick, stressed. They eat bad. Yes. Ever wonder why? Labor law has been subverted in this country. Our commutes are longer. We're always in our freaking cars. Where is the 21st century transit system? Green areas to walk? Think about it.
How about the people who the country doesnt pay the health care for, do they have to pay the tax on junk food. This is just another big brother intrusion into our lives and yet more of our "so called" freedoms. Americans are over regulated and the government is way intrusive into our lives. Yet Americans still say we are "free" as more and more control over our lives by the government. This will not lower the cost of health care.

On rare occasions, organic is the same, or less, than conventional. So it is happening.....at least here in CA.
Get into Farmers markets. There's some organic, and at half the cost!! ("Denio's in Sacramento!)

But when you get SICK enough to need medical care, it's a drain on society.
You're probably a willing participant of control already: fast food commercials, the protein myth, food pyramid, flu shots, etc

We do not need a top down health care system. Having the gov in control of health care is unacceptable. I will never support a gov run system.
