I wouldn't know since I'm in the States.

However, lip synching is a common practice to avoid mic problems, or other technical problems. Or physical problems with a voice (due to illness or whatever). They don't want any mistakes during a broadcast.

In the UK if you mime a performance these days on TV you are almost frowed upon. Britney Spears came to the UK in November a performed on a TV show called the X factor, she mimed womenizer and got slated by the media for it. You can watch it on you tube.
