In the original novel there were no tanks because all the soldiers were equipped with Mobile Armour, basically big powersuits, so tanks were obsolete. No tanks in the Novel I guess meant no tanks in the movie.

This film wouldn't be a movie at all. If all that was shown was the planet being nuked, Then the movie would be pointless and boring, And be about 10 minutes long. But because they've used guns and not nuked it, They've put a lot of action in it and made it a lot better, Plus its awesome for a 1997 film. The guns are supreme and make the film more intense.
