You wonder how can I help my neighbor, whether he is next door or across the ocean? The answer is by allowing World Community Grid to use your unused computer time slices, and it is secure. No money out of your pocket. I've been a member since 2009. Team name JohnH2o.
@VicTheMouth crazy people that think it's a conspiracy to spy on their computers or who think there is already a cure that is covered up by the scientific community.
Work on removing all processed and refined foods. Most disease including cancer are caused by these foods. ALL FOOD NEEDS TO BE ORGANIC! Also work on getting rid of tobacco and legalize medical marijuana. ...STOP THE NEW WORLD ORDER!!! ERADICATE ALL THE CULTS!!! AND...
WCG is also extremely addictive, as I'm sure many people here realize. It's very fun to run the interesting projects, and the aspect of competition and gaining points is exciting.
Fight AIDS - der Supercomputer wird die Prteine knacken und Aids besiegen. WCG ist die letzte Chance. Für die nächste und alle Generationen ! IBM macht es möglich
1)Stanley Litow, IBM's VP of Corporate Affairs & Corporate Citizenship.
2)Robin Willner, VP for Global Initiatives.
What is World Community Grid?
1) WCG is a virtual supercomputer whose Power Will help address a hole range of humanitarian concerns, from health care issues like aids research and cancer research.
2) Finding better strings of rice that are more nutritious, finding early diagnostic tools for cancer
1) It an amazing opportunity for people to get involved in humanitarian issues.
1) WCG is doing a study of all of the proteins in rice to come up with stronger strings of rice to improve the world food supply. I cant imagine anything more vital than make sure of larger and larger numbers of people are able to have the food that they need.
2) I think a lot of people know that one of the reasons why the HIV aids virus it is so dangerous it is because it mutates really quickly, and it is always changing and hard to keep up with, so that means we are gonna always need new drugs.
Weve been so lucky and so fortunate that science has found drugs that really keep people alive with HIV today but we need to keep up with that virus and that is what WCG does, it keeps looking for the next generation of drugs, the next generation of drugs, so we will be prepared.
1) Im involved with WCG because IBMs innovation technology allows people to donate the unused power on their individual computer to address problems in the world and this is a new level of contribution. It is not cash, it is not writing a check, it is not donating their time, it is actually donating something that cost them nothing, that they dont use, and that can really make a difference in the worlds future.
2) In one of the great things about WCG is that we can support research that everybody else is ignoring, because it doesnt matter in the market place, but it matters to people. Let me give you an example.
There is a horrible diseases called dengue fever. And if you live in India, or you live in Africa, or you live in parts of China, this is a horrible, horrible diseases, it is a fatal diseases. But there are no treatments. Can you imagine in the 21tst century there are no treatments for this disease? Well were going to find one at WCG; it is one of our important projects, discovering dengue drugs.
But were also looking for new projects. There are so many unsolved problems, and there are a lot of people with great ideas, and they cant get access to a supercomputer.
Bring us your research ideas, bring us your proposals come to worldcommunitygrid you can submit a research proposal, and we will see if we can help you.
2) It really is safe, we had engineered this. So that five different ways from Sunday weve made sure that is going to be secure. Everything that we know about.
And on top of that, at IBM, We have a group, They are called ethical hackers, and we pay them to come and try to hack the system, and they try and we make sure that theyre regularly making sure that the system is secure , so we are on top of it.
1) It takes all of 2 or 3 minutes. You simply go to worldcommunitygrid, sign up, and then when youre not using your computer, instead of it going to a screensaver, your power will go to finding a cure for AIDS, developing stronger string of rice or perhaps curing cancer.
2) worldcommunitygrid it will take you less than 3 minutes and youre going to feel great.
Bonic, is a great program. i often forget its there, I can play high speed twitch games and it doesn't affect the frame rate one bit. You can even turn down the Max cpu usage if your afraid your computer might overheat in summer. It doesn't use that much ram either, only about 30mb. Firefox right now is using over 200mb!
Genetically modifying rice proteins...? How on earth is that going to help anyone? I guess everyone forgot about the beta-carotene GM rice hype, and how all of the corporations wrongfully advertised it as "the solution to world hunger" when it reality it wasn't anything but rice that required 10 times more water than normal to grow with a few nanograms of vitamin A virused into its genetics.
I respect their point of view, but this kind of reminds me of Monsanto, to be honest.
I'm a member since 2006 and highly recommend everyone else to join it. There are no safety issues and, as we can see in the video, it costs you nothing, just a few minutes to sign up!
I've been a WCG member for about a year and a half, and was with the UD cancer research project before that. The software does NOT "look through" the computer. It simply uses the computer to do molecular modeling then sends to results back in. With thousands of computers each working on a tiny piece of the research, the computing power can be phenominal. Your computer is under no risk whatsoever except for a small increase in power usage. I highly recommend all participation.
When we're not using our computer, you're looking through it? There are probably high security issues with something like this. Using the power of the PS3 or the 360 seems like a safer thing for you to use. Less privacy issues.
More people use PC rather than PS3's or 360, and regular CPU's can handle a much-broader range of computing than PS3's and 360's dedicated CPU's.
As for the safety issue - don't worry about it. I've been running WCG on multiple machines with different OS's and security (AV's, etc.) since 2006 and there wasn't a single security problem. Also, this is a huge-scale project covered by IBM and a horde of tech-savvy technicians and users. If there was a problem, they'd be the first to know about it.

I would like to just take your word for it, and I'm not actually against the idea, actually I love it. However it must be weighed with the possibility that this project could have access to your computer. If that was explained a bit more, then I wouldn't see a problem what so ever. It's good to know that you haven't had problems, but does that mean they can't do it? Or just haven't?
Any other program that uploads data to the Internet has the same capability - Anti-Virus software, for example, with their auto-updated databases. Many companies have the capability to invade our privacy... if they ever dare to do so they'll be ruined and they know it. This is IBM. They can't take that risk.
If you're that concerned, you may want to ask in the WCG forums about privacy measures.
the new version of BOINC now offers Protected application execution: in this mode, applications are run under an unprivileged account, so that they cannot access your files.
I'm very proud to be part of this project by donating by free CPU time.

no need to research rice. Quinoa has all 8 essential amino acids. We just have to begin growing Quinoa as a food.
