A very wonderful play by all and Daryl is tremendous. It is a different Genesis, although I liked more and grew up with the more progressive times, it is a recognized good effort.

Hackett plays this solo note for note - may as well stay at home ans listen to the album. Daryl (who's been playing this song with the band since 1984) plays with heart, vigour and enthusiasm. Steve may have written the solo, but Daryl perfected it.
@gideonquinn Right, and Frusciante is better than Hendrix. Seldom people write something as stupid as what you posted, kid. Daryl sounds like a guitarist in a bad Mexican hotel.
@IntuitionDigression his name is in the video description. You don't know much about Genesis if you've never heard of him. Given that the "other" guitarist left 33 years ago I reckon you need to get your head in the present :)
@gideonquinn I can sing and play all songs of Genesis before 1977. I am not willing to lose time with the last 33 years pop band: I like classical, jazz, and serious rock music, not popular music for unskilled ears. If I were to listen to pop music, I would turn to other singers and bands, much better than the last-33 years Genesis
@IntuitionDigression then you can hardly complain about never having heard of him can you hahaha :p He's the guitarist they bring in to play Steve Hacketts parts live. They've had him for decades. He's not officially a band member, more like a session musician, but he's been their second guitarist for live shows since 1978...ignoring the calling all stations period of course, but then again most people do try to ignore it...
The sustain and tone needed for this song requires a double-coil pickup/humbucker, the single coil is just too thin sounding for this material. Sorry dude. Just a fact.
@rpeggio I think there is heart in Darryl's playing he just plays a different style than Hackett. Darryl is much faster along the neck. And, the tempo of this song is much faster than originally done. Believe me, I love Genesis as much as anyone.
@Screentan Daryl is a great guitar player. Each brings his own type of solo!! But I'm SO GLAD they played this because it was Phil drumming without Chester for the first part and the keyboards in this are phenomenal. Not to mention the awesome bass line also. This right here before the solo is Genesis itself, just the 3 of them. Then Chester & Daryl join for the guitar solo part. Firth is a classic in the catalogue & both versions are great in their own way!
Sorry to say, it reminds me of a programmed Synclavier and followed by a slight Joe Satriani (or similar) vibe. Anyway, to see PC charging tickett money for this package I can only say: Robbery, Asshole And Battery!!!!
I saw Genesis with Steve Hackett and while Daryl is an excellent guitarist, it was something about Hackett's playing that gave this song, as well as others, more depth and emotion.
I can´t understand so many people saying awful things about this video... Genesis was and still is an amazing band. First era and second era are both amazing, each one in its particular way. And they are all amazing musicians and writers. And Daryl Streumer plays an excellent guitar solo. Stop being stupid! They rocked then and they rock now... Genesis forever... =)
Anyone who'd sooner listen to Calling All Stations than Both Sides needs their ears syringing. Oh, and Daryl takes Hackett's solo and pisses all over it here - fantastic.
Hey, I was here @ the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia at this concert on 9/19.....it was great seeing this band together after so many years of being apart. They still sound great :-)
They (Banks - Rutherford - Collins) never had the "magic" of Génesis. The magic of Génesis had it Anthony Phillips, Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett and with them went . Daryl Stuermer is an excellent guitarist. But Steve Hackett is one only and original guitarist... That is the difference to my humble understand...
...given the fact, that Tony is responsible for many Genesis tunes, alas the soundscapes and the whole mood in the Genesis sound, I oppose this oppinion...
...is it so difficult to understand, that people change, and so does their music?...
...I dig all the "phases" of the band...they matured as composers...
...have to admit though, that PC`s solo stuff has become incredibly dull and boring, at least since "Both sides", as opposed to PG...he just keeps getting better and better...
"Both Sides..." was such a horrid album I could barely stand to finish listening to it once. My personal stopping point for Phil ends at "No Jacket Required". A very poppy album, but still very intelligent and fun (except for the Sussudio lyrics).
I do like all Genesis albums though, including "Calling All Stations". I think the Banks/Rutherford songwriting on that effort is very strong, and the replacement vocalist was great.
I think "Wind and Wuthering" & "A trick of a tail" with the presence of Steve Hackett still remains something. But the stigma of "only a pop band more" was coming soon. (I'm not speak english...)
That opening with the strident synth is awful! What were they thinking? I've seen Genesis many times and been a fan since the mid-70s. Stuermer is a great guitarist, but he has an impossible task to follow the Hackett original, so much feeling in his playing. Stuermer sounds "sterile" and clinical to me when I've heard them live, whereas Hackett stirred the emotions. C'mon Tony - how can you kill this song with that intro?!! And guys, lose some of the light show, get back to basics a bit.
Said in the magazines of those times that the one who him programaba the keyboards to Banks was Hackett. Sorry for my huglie english
I enjoy Hackett's version more, but Steurmer is put in quite an awkward position in playing what may be one of the greatest guitar solos ever. If he played it note for note with all the sustain in it, people would call it sacrilege for copying someone else's masterpiece. HIs take, with ultrafast playing and lots of notes, was to respect that no one but Hackett should play the original.
You know, Daryl's playing is quite excellent. The video clearly demonstrates he has excellent technique and an awesome sense of rhythm. But, he tries too hard. What made Hackett's solo so beautiful was not its intricacy, but its utter simplicity.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. - Leonardo da Vinci
Maybe the simple reality is that Genesis has a near 40 year career. As great as he is, Peter Gabriel was in the band for fewer than 10 of them. A band only has a certain time on stage. Given those constraints, Genesis did a great job of highlighting their whole catalog on the 2007 tour (they could have sacrificed some Invisible Touch stuff for some Abacab stuff though). They made a concerted effort to please as many of their fans as possible.
Nothing against Daryl but he cant replace Hackett. Would be nice to have heard the entire firth of fifth instead of a small piece. Dont see yes dong bits of 10 minute songs, but I guess Phil is not too fond of Gabriel era music.
(cont'd) When I have a purist moment, I go back to the old records or the older footage right here, but again, this is a new aspect, and quite virtuoso.
Kudos also to Ray who I think has posted the best footage -with awesome sound- of this piece.
(sigh) Yet again, daryl completely butchers and destroys prog rock's most beautiful guitar solo with awful out-of-context wanking up and down the fretboard, with no idea about the feel of this majestic piece of music . . he played it closer to the original in rome though. Good thing we have some great Genesis tribute bands around to show Genesis how it should be done. G2 and Regenesis being two of the best in the UK.
Dude, get a clue! Did you ever hear of improvisation? I was at this concert that night, and it was one of the most amazing solos to witness live. If you want to hear something note-for-note, put on the CD...
Also, I first saw Genesis with Peter Gabriel in 1973, at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia. I've been priveledged to see the "Lamb Lies Down...", "Duke", and "Invisible Touch" tours throughout the years. Each show was a massive improvement & quantum leap beyond the last. Appreciate whenever you see them, it may be the last time you get the chance... but then again, that's been said before...
I have to agree with Sean - I quite like it, I think it adds life to the piece. By comparison, some other renditions that can be found on this venue - even by the Hackster himself - seem almost dull and lifeless. I am reminded of the immortal scene in Amadeus, where he sits down in front of the Emperor to play Salieri's "Little March of Welcome" from memory ("From memory?? Show us...")
Totally disagree. Daryl's interpretation would be somewhat out-of-place in the full version of "Firth Of Fifth", granted, but this shortened instrumental-only version has always been purely a vehicle for him to display his incredibly virtuosic guitar playing (or, as Mike would put it, for him to "go to town"). In that context, his interpretation of Hackett's solo is just fine.
In fact, THIS lineup is the WORST 'tribute band' of genesis, they really lack the feel of the old days,(1970 -77) and is embarrassing. A shadow of the former 'proper line-up' with Hackett - Gabriel. Daryl rules nothing. The ONLY worthwhile attempt at a Comeback or Anniversary Tour, was to get the 5 originals back, or NO TOUR. They did this for the Money, and was a dreadful Flop. Lifeless and emotionless.
I think YOU seem to 'care' about my comment, seeing as youre all getting upset. Just face it, Genesis became boring and insipid from 1978 onwards. And this was one tour too far into the realms of mediocrity and lifeless performance. Stuermer needs to hang up his tired old guitar with his cliched, overdone solos and 'fuck off' back to where he came from.
Phil and Tony should know better. But sadly, it goes on and on embarrassingly into their 50s-60s. Any local Genesis tribute band guitarist can play with more feeling that Stuermer. Peace.
What a clueless dork. Do you listen to music through the toilet pan? Do you still wear bell bottom pants and cheesecloth? Anyone who knows guitar knows that Steurmer is a genius player. Of course it is Hackett's iconic piece but this is not the point. Though he is brilliant you slate the guy 'cos he is not Hackett. Btw the tour was a worldwide sell out. Plonker.
FUCK DARYL STUERMER STEVE HACKETT WAS FAR FAR BETTER THAN THIS JEAN LUC PONTY REJECT!!!!!

Freedom of speech is still here. And so is yours, just about. So just allow everyone their comments, Without being contentious.

In that context, his interpretation of Hackett's solo is just fine.

fuck off ...stuermer kick ass..and tribute bands are completely useless and they are realy butchers (musical box for example)
you dont apreciate it masterpiece like this

Peace.

Take it easy, its not that bad.

Plonker.

me too (Boston) - the sound was terrible. can't wait for the DVD, although this solo seems to have been played more true to the original in Rome
