This is strange: why the need to dig this problem out right now. I was in the Eastern part of Niger when this started and people weren't eating regularly, sometimes, they cooked nothing at all. I did not see any dead person but the lingering famine signs were definitely there. In december 2004, I was in Maine Soroa, Diffa, very close to Zinder and I saw balanites trees half eaten by locust....
The authorities of Niger may have taken their reponsabilities and nobody will have talked of famine
But they did not and worst, the only visit Tandja gratified the area is this single visit shown when ushering Koffi Annan.
The relief program did there best to stop the unconcern.
