  • 5th floor please...

  • Kenny sure has been successful ! The song is a classic. I'm tempted to record this song for my second video. :-)

  • NO, I'm gonna be perfectly honest here. For years, my high school teacher has always made it clear that he hates Kenny G, and for the years I studied under him I never figured out why. Now though, being in university and all, I've come to realize that this guy does actually kinda suck. The tone sucks, the songs are suited for an elevator, he doesn't bend the pitch, and he is devoid of dynamic. What's more, I watched a video of him live, and his jaw was the stiffest I've ever seen on a pro.

  • Oh my...!!! You are totally a homosexual dude. You are like your high school teacher. After turning to college, then you realize that you are just like him, a homosexual. Maybe you are a member of a band and probably the only stupid member of the group. The music doesn't suck, but it is you who really wants to suck. If you would play a saxophone, you would really first think first on inserting the instrument in your butt hole. Crazy HomoSexual...

  • Mistrz nastrojów, cudnych melodii jedyny i niepowtarzalny Kenny G

  • I had a headache when i clicked on this vid and this song cleared it right up (i play saxophone)

  • Jazz is the best Genre of Music ever made...

  • People who said: this is airplane, elevator, hotel and restaurant music, they are right.!But this is GOOD elevator music, which makes us smile and relaxed. So, different type of music have different purpose, and Kenny's music full fill it's task, therefore , it is GOOD. :)

  • i think it is pooo

  • Vanilla

  • Jazz is food for soul!

  • Nothing like some good elevator music. Very nice tone though.

  • @MrAlaska67329 Elevator music? I don't think so. A candle light dinner with this song in the background, give me a brake. Is there no romance in your life? (just kidding, kind of)

  • @vanea99 oow uhm well, anyways this music is awesome :D

  • @vanea99

    macdonalds or burger king restaurant?

  • @graphomet Hilton. On the roof.

  • @vanea99 Ambience. Ambience is a noun and ambient is an adjective.

  • @vanea99

I like that outfit, it looks good on you. This is a wonderful place isn't it, do you come here often? Care for more wine?

yep you're right, it creates a good atmosphere :)

  • All people who are putting him down and saying he doesn't know how to play shut up. As a fellow instrumentalist I know exactly what he does. Its not to create conflict and resolve it or anything, he makes flowing music. Soft relaxing music that if you sit and listen with your eyes closed you will feel it go through your soul.

  • Im not a fan of Kenny G, but I love all the self pretentious pricks who slag the guy off. All of them experts, and all of them unheard of nobodys.

  • صباح الخير حبيبي؛وحشت قلبي وعيوني؛ازيك ؟بهديك المقطوعة دي

  • @CravingCock738 nice name XD

  • my dads always like hey lets get a kenny G book im like he doesnt play clarinet...... parents these days :O

  • AHHHH that nasty insistent saccharine vibrato and that one sickly turn that he does over and over again

  • super

  • 73 doesn't take him seriously anymore because of Southpark.

    Including me AHIHIHIHI.

  • Well, frankly I just find kenny g boring. he's just really bad at creating conflict and resolving it. he never really creates tension...

  • last one - listen to this "watch?v=xSdwVvBZFks", this is on board a ship with a guy playing sax (Boney James - a journeyman sax player compared to the greats) and a piano player playing trombone - and its fantastic.

  • Comment removed

  • i don't really care if he is the mcdonalds of jazz. he sounds good. doesn't mean we who love kenny g have bad taste. i love the oldies (coltrane, davis, parker, big band quartets) as well. they are all great. good music.

  • Trying to play this on tenor is hell.

  • kenny brought ''saxy'' back!!!

  • excellent

  • Kenny, you sax to the soul.

  • @onchiriable excellent

  • The best

  • I really love this!!!!!!

  • this is too perfect

  • As time goes by...Time...

  • @n8dagr892 im just gettin into jazz and i find this very enjoyable. and btw u dont see anyone going to ur school play and say wat a twat u look like on stage, no need to hate.

  • @omgmricon

if you are just getting into jazz *STOP* listening to this you will NOT find it between the lips of Mr Kenny

  • @donnyab May I ask what you find lacking in Kenny G's performance? If the answer is "nothing" then shut up and leave.

  • @chadboy0

Ok listen to "watch?v=p0XdQWm_m4A" on YT - it may be a little unfair on Kenny G because I am comparing him to Coleman Hawkins but listen to the difference (from 01:27 onwards) !. That's what I find lacking.

  • @donnyab You're comparing a smooth jazz band to a solo artist? That's like comparing oranges to apples.

  • @chadboy0

listen to this "watch?v=FRMTaeoQw2Y", its not sax though, its trombone - listen only from 01:27 to 02:19 (if you don't like James Brown) - its called *FEELING*. Thats what I find lacking !.

  • @donnyab Your definition of feeling must be different to mine, because Kenny G does have feeling when he plays, and I can feel it.

  • @chadboy0 alas.........I'll pray for you anyway

  • @chadboy0 Well, I find that it lacks the capability to not make me nauseous.

  • Play it again .... Sam

  • This guy over dubbed Louis Armstrong!....(what nerve)

He is the Bernie Madoff of jazz...

Most of his fans aren't even avid jazz fans.....

His range is poor mainly playing off pentatonic scales....

People please listen to real Jazz, like UniverisityofMunich said This is the McDonalds of Jazz, low quality, commercialized, low grade, indigestible, and many other horrible things.

Wake up to the reall Jazz and you will be inspired!

  • @rishsn chick corea is pretty gud jazz

  • @fred8065

    poor fred lol

  • I lke Kenny G hes my idol!

  • I lke Kenny G

  • this musique is priceless

  • (2 of 2) but you wouldn't do very well speaking it in france because you would have a terrible accent. That's why, in jazz, framing an individual accent is through transcribing the work of the masters.

Though this can limit players a lot: they can spend too much time quoting the masters and not being innovative. Though, having said that, all players should at least do transcribing of the "masters" at least some time in their career.

I kind of see jazz, at the very highest level, as a sort

  • (2 of 2) important to show just what kind of stuff is out there.

I don't think it's important to go into my musical contributions, but I am a student musician.

I could go into the many reasons why I dislike this particular artist, but that would be impinging upon other people.

Music all really burns down to is being able to engage with others, on a level that other forms of communication really can't achieve.

I know where my preferences lie though, having said that.

  • kenny g...

what's the point ? good luck to the guy, but i mean there's just so many better, less well known players out there. i can kinda understand if my gran heard it on the radio and liked it, but the real hardcore Kenny G fans, why ??? please answer me ? in a world with real greats just a click away on youtube, why listen to Kenny G.

anyone out there type in Lester Young, Art Pepper, Ben Webster, Stan Getz.... take a good look (and listen) and then tell me Kenny G is worth listening to

  • @IndependentGeorge76 okay, George. I've been having a most interesting (and very civil) discussion further down on this page with others who might agree with you. My answer to your 1st question would be - why can't people listen to him AS WELL AS other lesser-known sax players? I listen to (quite literally) hundreds of different musicians over the course of a year. I'm thrilled to discover new (to me) musicians. The 2nd response would be 'why not'? It's just a matter of freedom of choice.

  • hermosa herosa hermosa!!!

  • I can't stand the way his sax sounds

  • love it!

  • charlie parker could play better that this if he played his horn with his ass.

  • Charlie Parker plays different kind of Zazz, Kenny G smooth jazz and Parker was on drugs when he was playing

  • @drc480 no, they play different types of music. Parker's music was intellectual and harmonically groundbreaking, and Kenny G's was conformist and solely for profit. The reason that Kenny G isnt considered jazz is because the core of jazz is based around the concept of improvising based of what is heard around you, and letting players build tension and then break it. However, kenny g dubs over pre-recorded tracks, which destroys any chemistry the rhythm section might have had.

  • @drc480 also, all his songs are in the same key and he plays out of tune.

  • @nevernateofkamal lol, i pissed my pants with laughter when i read this comment. good show.

  • @nevernateofkamal dude charlie parker played the saxophone... or you call that a horn?

  • @TheDutchDJs yeah, in jazz generally a "horn" refers to any non-rhythm section instrument. I play violin, and people will often refer to me as part of the "horn" section. it jsut saves time.

  • A very pleasing rendition here of the classic popular song, "As Time Goes By" in a "well-performed jazz style" by the "incomparable" Kenny G.

  • how the heck is it possible to SUCK THIS MUCH at music? ahhhmygoodddddd

  • magic spell my soul:;)

  • Whenever you listen to beautiful music your soul become brighter, and in this very moment try to think of your creator, GOD, how merciful he is, who created all the beauty of this universe and gave us everything,oh God how much I love you.

  • is magic

  • Saddens me to think that people actually believe this is quality jazz. This is the pop of jazz.

  • @ZOMGItsRobot does that make it bad

  • @ZOMGItsRobot does that make it bad, cuz it sounds good to me

  • @ZOMGItsRobot This is the McDonalds of jazz.

  • @UniversityOfMunich So it makes millions in revenue, is enjoyed by millions and only hurts those who take in too much of it?

  • @agolakchub yes. all of that plus it gives you eargasims

  • @agolakchub Yeah that's basically what I meant. Kenneth Gorelick is a very able saxophonist and unfortunately an even better businessman. Hence: Kenny G, music that is likeable and easily digested but ultimately unfulfilling. Without wishing to appear overbearing, I would like to suggest that you view the videos at watch?v=pnxeKl-Kbqw or watch?v=amtY4euhSpo for pieces that are similar to this in scope and mood but keep far truer to the creativity and passion at the core of jazz.

  • @UniversityOfMunich Thanks for the two links - I am definitely quite ignorant to the world of Jazz so it was very interesting to see what is considered soulful and 'true' jazz so to speak. Its very easy to see that Kenny's melodies are indeed very mainstream but I suppose its simplicity is what makes it quite fulfilling - most of his melodies have a catchy, memorable melody. Of the two links you gave me, I prefer 'Autumn Leaves' more than 'The Long Way Home' so if you have more, please share!

  • @agolakchub Thanks for checking them out. I completely see what you're saying about Kenny's music; the first comment I made was only in passing and I feel quite guilty that it's been rated highly.

Anyway, Autumn Leaves is pretty typical Stan Getz so you should like most of his work. You may also like the Dave Brubeck Quartet; they tended to play a little faster but still have that cool/relaxed vibe. And definitely look up Miles Davis's album Kind of Blue - it's incredible.

  • @UniversityOfMunich excellent

  • @UniversityOfMunich

    dope nonetheless ;)

  • @ZOMGItsRobot jazz used to be pop man.

  • @NathanielSametz Bro, I know that. And it was good. old pop was good, old jazz was good, old everything was good. popular music has degraded to a level of complete shit in the past 10 years. What will people remember the 2000's for? basically nothing. I'm saying that when it comes to jazz, Kenny G is the modern pop of jazz. A.K.A., crap. He used to be a really good sax player, playing some really great tunes, but then he sold out like a champ.

  • @ZOMGItsRobot that's where people like you keep erring. Not a single comment here has implied or stated that they believe it's quality 'jazz'. What they're saying is that they LIKE IT! - and think of it as beautiful. Quite different from those jazz purists who keep dumping on Kenny G for not playing what they think of as jazz. Where is it written that every sax player has to adhere to one standard? Why can't everyone just enjoy what they like? or a musician play whatever he/she enjoys?

  • @ElizabethGS He states that he plays jazz on numerous occasions. I appreciate your comment about taste, and can relate. everything boils down to taste. yet, when he goes as far as to frame an image that he's a "jazz" saxophonist, and when many people (as in, non jazz "purists") regard this is jazz, then this is what causes uproar.

To say that he's distinctive in his style "every sax player has to adhere to one standard" annoys me. Most decent players are constantly pushing the boundaries

  • @ElizabethGS (2 out of 2) of what can be done with contemporary music and jazz. Kenny G does not do this. He is constantly playing the same old crap that many players conquer in their first year of playing the instrument. he has come close, and indeed does, do the art a great disservice for his playing, and attributing himself within the jazz genre.

and as to those who enjoy this, I encourage you to search for more players out there. You can do far better then Kenny G, trust me.

  • @musicalrt I DO understand what you're saying, and FTR I have dozens of favourite saxophone players I listen to regularly. I wasn't talking about my own personal tastes, but commenting on why can't other people be left alone to enjoy what they like? The Video heading was Kenny G. Therefore those of you who actively dislike his playing knew full well what you were going to hear when you 'tuned in', n'est-ce-pas? I've never clicked on a lady gaga clip (for example). Never would. Get my point? ;)

  • @ElizabethGS once again. I respect and understand what you are saying, don't get me wrong. but the singular thing that irks me and many other people is how he classes himself as jazz. most jazz musicians wouldn't care if he simply labelled himself as "pop" - because that's what he is. that's what irks most people. Pat metheny sums up most musicians views up very eloquently about this. Finally, yeah, I came here so I could have such conversations as you find yourself partaking in.

  • @musicalrt ahh..somehow I knew Pat Metheny's name would crop up. Have you ever done research on him? You might be surprised by how some of his work was deemed 'bland' and 'rubbish' by real jazz artists/critics, so he shouldn't talk. Kenny G's found his niche and obviously he has a huge following. Why let it bother you? I could get crazy about so many modern pop 'artists', but why? It's a useless endeavour. I simply promote the ones I DO like, a far more satisfying use of my time.

  • @ElizabethGS Yeah.

I actually sort of half agree with your comment. Personally, I think that Metheny's style isn't exactly what I'm into. In saying that, I think he has done a lot to further what's considered "contemporary" jazz. In terms of "research", I have quite a few metheny albums, and fyi my entire music library at the moment consists of bop, contemporary, pre-bop, funk and fusion. So I know what to listen for.

I think your comments are well worded.

  • @musicalrt ty. I respect how civil our discussion has been. MUCH appreciated. We all have different tastes in music dependent on our upbringing, backgrounds, parents' tastes, exposure to Anything and Everything in Life. How boring it would be if we all enjoyed the same thing, no? I'd be so turned off by 'Stepford People'... an audience all nodding in sync at exactly the same musical passage. Music is such a personal experience. We should enjoy what it gives us, not begrudge others their tastes.

  • @musicalrt ..on that same theme we simply can't 'educate' others to our own tastes much as we might believe we all 'know better'. That verges into snobbery. Those making the nasty comments here should take a good long look in the mirror. What contribution have THEY made musically? Do they even play instruments? Entertain people in hospitals, nursing homes? Kenny G does bring a lot of pleasure to people. What right do any of us have to question their enjoyment? That's the bottom line for me.

  • @ElizabethGS Hahaha, I agree with too much of what you're saying.

I am not suggesting that people's taste are "inferior" to mine, or whatever. I don't like that concept. Yet, I do like the concept of showing people some of the other stuff that is out there, that they might not find, and they can respond to it however they please.

I think the problem is a lot of people don't realise some of the talented musicians that are out there, and somewhat relevant to their tastes, so I think it's...

  • @ElizabethGS (2 of 2). I don't let it bother me terribly much, but I find it unfortunate that people define jazz, and jazz saxophone, as this.

Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Coltrane, Brecker, Warne Marsh, Stan Getz, Konitz, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt and Kenny Garret (the REAL Kenny G).

  • @musicalrt I do hear you. I mostly wish sax players wouldn't keep copying the 'old masters'. There are so many new, innovative players coming up. I use my energies listening to (and supporting) them. Your argument is valid, but it's trying to stem the tide imo. I run into the same thing in re harmonicas. I play chromatics and any attempt to 'educate' people as to just who is 'good' or not...is an exercise in futility. They think Alanis is good ...have no clue about Toots Thielemans. See? ;)
