most diesel racing/pulling organizations require their trucks to have an upward facing stack, and not a side exit exhaust. One, it helps to clear up the smoke, and two, the main reason is, if a turbo decided to shoot the turbine wheel out the exhaust, you want it going up in the air and not into the crowd. Makes sense to me.
