the film is called "hear my song", made in 1990 and can be purchased from Amazon for 4 pounds. The main female is called Nancy, the girlfriend of the club owner who wants to bring Joe to his club, but Joe is a tax exile
Thanks for posting this top clip from a TOP FILM!!! Just finished watching it on dvd (only £3.97 from Amazon inc. delivery!). My favourite scene has to be the cow almost going into the well :-) !!!
Beautiful beyond words, thank you so much for posting this ! Something as gorgeous as this is does strange and wonderful things to time and the human heart.
I saw this this movie when it came out. I feel blessed for loving foreign films. My brothers from neighborhood laugh at me for loving this music but i guess i am just different. cheers
I posted this reply on the other hear my song part,, but if you can post the movie in parts, or at the least the part where the couple say "we have not seen the things you seen "or something like that. and the part where the conductor says "if the phone doens't ring in the middle of the night it's me"
hahaha loved this movie sice i was a little boy, but please can anybody send me a message with the title of the song finton and mickey sing when they drive to search for joe? for sorry i don't know any of the lyrics but "we're moving" :(
Sorry everyone - Ned Beatty never sang a note in this film. Locke songs were charmingly and convincingly imitated by Vernon Midgley, son of the English opera tenor Walter Midgley. He doesn't have quite the chesty ring of Locke, but who did in this material?
The film was unfairly looked over by the general public in 1991 but the critics loved it. It is a wonderfully entertaining film loosely based on the Irish tenor Josef Locke which really began the careers of the actors Adrian Dunbar and James Nesbitt. An unforgettable film that you will watch again and again.... The DVD is out now AT LONG LAST!
Thanks d114125. I put my order in, plus there's a site where you can register to watch it when it comes to tv in your area. I am dying to see this movie!
CORRECTION: What an embarrassing slip. (I'm sure some people won't mind, but they're not the sort to be watching this clip!) In my comment, part 4, I typed "immoral Irish tenors" when of course I meant "IMMORTAL Irish tenors" ... Sorry!
[1st of 4 parts] I've heard (true or false?) that "Hear My Song" is pretty cheesy, but I DON'T CARE! I desperately want the (alleged/promised) DVD. Josef Locke was larger than life, yet watching the YouTube clips of Ned Beatty lip-synching Vernon Midgely is a gas. I'm not sure who has (technically speaking) the worse voice — Midgely or Locke.
[2nd of 4 parts] Yet Midgely, who possesses a smaller, more lyrical and "less virile" instrument than Locke, demonstrates uncanny genius in capturing the idiosyncratic phrasings, distinctive mannerisms, and warm exuberance of Locke's distinctive, instantly recognizable singing style.
[3rd of 4 parts] So let the academic music critics lambast JL (Joseph McLaughlin) for not being a conservatory-trained opera star and for sometimes bleating rather painful, off-pitch climactic high notes — he will always shine in the pantheon of immoral Irish tenors (IMHO third to John McCormack and Frank Patterson).
[4th of 4 parts] And this is certainly because he was the greatest of natural entertainers and the biggest-hearted of men, who never forgot his roots and exuberantly transported millions of appreciative fans to a magic emotional space of ecstatic appreciation and fervent gratitude. Listen to Josef Locke when you're blue — you won't feel that way for long.
I was just looking to hear the song. Didn't know anything about a dvd. Heck, I didn't even know the guy was Irish. Thought he was German, hence the name Josef. Beautiful song. Very touching.
I sang with my father in the car from London to Donegal in August 1993 to a tape of Jo Locke it was our last journey together he died three months later at just 61 but both of them could sing!and I really believe still are somewhere..love to them both hope theyre looking after eachotherx A.C
loved watchin this so tryed to get it on dvd no joy but the guy says that it's going to be released after the new year on dvd so watch out for it hmv stores
There's a DVD availiable in Germany, with subtitles- but if you can work out the on screen menu in german, you'll find an undubbed, unsubtitled option, just as it was shown here. Fantastic film.
Thanks for posting this - it's a brilliant film. Get it if you can!! My favourite scene is when the bouncers are dancing in the street outside the club :)
If you're in the UK you can get it on DVD in HMV I saw it the other week. It's released by "4dvd" in new red packaging, along with other classics like 'Rita, Sue & Bob Too', 'Velvet Goldmine', 'Dancer in the Dark', etc. Only about £6.00 look on amazon too!
what a great natural singer was Josef Locke....born Joseph McLaughlin in Derry, Ireland

I've always like Ned Beatty as an actor. Does anyone know whether this is dubbed or is he actually singing it himself?

Ned Beatty done a first class job when he played Joe as did the rest of the cast.
Whenever I feel down I play these clips and I immediatley feel good,( a better tonic
than any Doctor can prescribe )
This film should be aired more on T.V
