Yeah, I tend to use mine without my PPE when I'm only going to be bucking small branches. As far as NPTC goes - I will be certified within the year by the United States Forest Service.
its good to be certified when using a chainsaw at least you know you are above the other people you see using chainsaws and thinking ho my god its an accident waiting to happen
in the the uk our main arbor college is called merrist wood
and in our great storm of 1987 it destroyed millions of trees and a short while after the top arbor instructor killed himself by slicing through is neck with a chainsaw by accident but it goes to show that even the best can get caught out with chainsaws

NPTC - Certificate of Competence. Pretty much training in safety, and operation of chainsaws.
