Yes! This is Lefty Gardner's P-38L-5LD. It's possible that it's been slightly modified for the air racing he used to do, but not much. He was known more for his showmanship than he was for competative air racing! His low passes are what made the crowd stand on their feet; and was mostly responsible for the low level limits imposed on Reno now. This is still a beautiful bird, especially polished as she is! Keep her flying!
Please note that former B24 & B17 pilot Lefty Gardner owned and flew this P38L (N25Y) for many years... He died on DEC.24, 2008 and is buried at Kerrville, Texas... During the funeral service, N25Y (flown by Nelson Azell) made a flyover pass .... To be sure ... Lefty was smiling....
For the record, this P-38 Lightning escaped the RSC at Kingman (scrap yard) in 1946 when it was possible to buy a? P-38 for $1250 USD for salvage... It also sat four years as a pile of rumble after a crash in 2001... To restore to flight at this level, N25Y required 80,000? man-hours plus money.... Thank you Mr. Mateschitz.
The P38L (AF44-53254) in this video is shown after a four-year-restoration and in its natural aluminum color (Not chrome)... N25Y has no record of combat but many planes were delivered to USAAF (1944-45) without paint and served that way..... The squadron colors were normally added (on tail) and logo to the nose... This logo normally consisted of a catchy phrase, girl's name or favorite drink ("Old Crow", for example).
Holy chrome-plated Lightning! The sickness has spread! LOL, no I actually like the polished aluminum look, especially on the old-style P-38's with the tapered nacelles. Very sleek. I'll bet that adds a few MPH to the top speed to, huh? Not real crazy about the Red Bull logo though. I wonder when Red Bull will decide to just drop the beverage bit and make their profits purely by racing. Hell, they could be the next NASCAR, or something. Amazing that so much $ can be made selling an energy drink.
Unless I have been misinformed, this aircraft used to be known as "White Lightning" and was previously painted white, owned and flown by Lefty Gardner.
Its just the framerate of the camera can only take an image less than once per rotation, so it goes all the way around before it takes another shot. Every time it looks like it reverses direction is when it passes another multiple of the camera framerate. Framerate is 1500 frames a minute (assuming 25 fps) and I counted 3 reversals so maybe the properllers are idling at 4500 rpm or so. That would be my rough guess.
The allison v-12 runds at a pacey 3000 rpm. And dont forget the gearing ratio between the engine and the propeller that enables the prop to spin at a much slower rpm than the engine. If those propellers actually where spinning at 4500 rpm, the blades would blast off.
Uh, no actually he's not "building oil pressure". That's when a guy takes the prop and rotates it a bit, to work oil throught the engine. I don't think that's really nessecary on a plane with an electric starter; the first second or so it turns the engine over ought to be enough to oil it up. He's letting the engines warm up AFTER starting them; that's why you can hear the electric starter whining and the engines sitting there idling for five minutes. Don't know how you missed that.
I know that isnt the correct paint scheme, but good god that polished aluminum is jaw dropping

Shiny.... shiny....... SHINY!!!!!!!!!!!! But why make it shiny? Why not just leave it in the original paint?

@MrJp990 because its red bull and saving its historic colors doesn't help them with advertising. Its sad really.

@livinghornet I mean, atleast do this to like a cessna 172... or an F/A-18 Superhornet.....

Lefty Gardner recieved 7 million dollars for this previous Confederate Air Force's famed
"White Lightning" with spare parts.
Damn shame he sold out for cash. The plane is not even in the United States anymore.
Sadly, Im sure it will crash in the next few years ! Complete waste !
