@StrawberryJungle ...wasn't being patronising. calling someone easy isn't in the least bit a compliment. when you're easily satisfied by mundane shit, you tend to submit yourself to and give in to lies and more stupid shit--not a good thing. there's nothing genius about what he says in this video--it's complete delusion. too much sleep is just as unhealthy as not enough...and besides, only a narcoleptic or maybe an alcoholic could sleep for days on end.
@azurenscens Yes I'm quite aware that it wasn't a compliment. You were being very condescending. You have no idea about what I'm satisfied by. You don't go throwing accusing comments at people you don't know as if you're better than them. If you'd actually noticed before you jumped down my throat, I never said I agreed with Bukowski. I just found what he's saying interesting. No one realistic has the time to sleep for days on end anyway.
@leathermystband It wasn't just the acne scars you cock sucker...he had a face that had seen everything and experienced a life that would take us a thousand lifetimes to live.
I did this in high school. I slept for 16-20 hours per day but I did it for a few months. I dropped out of school because I didn't go to school so I could stay home and sleep. It helped a bit, but wasn't a cure.
HAHAHA it is so funny to watch this and read comments. A video about a cynical know-it-all and debated by a bunch of lesser known cynical know-it-alls.
When you're a kid in grade school and high school the fictional syllabus has books that always have the implied word, "MORAL" and the end followed by a colon and the summing up of the books didactic purpose. Then you discover the novels of authors like William S. Burroughs, Celine and of course Bukowski who just....don't.....give.....a....shit. I think it's important to realize that the epiphany that these authors give us is more due to the time in our lives not their intrinsic value.
He finally gets to the truth at the end. I wonder how his boss at the Post Office would feel about him phoning in and saying that he won't be coming in for 3 or 4 days because he's depressed? They're be a lot less drunks and other assorted drug addicts around if we learned how to structure society with more slack. Not Bukowski of course, he was a natural drunkard. He'd drink even if he won a million dollars on the pick 6 at the racetrack.
Yeah, he would drink. Because he's the real deal. A true drunkard. A man committed to his craft. Not some pathetic college boy who gets wasted on 2 drinks and acts like a drunk school girl on Prom night...However, my rebuttal to your comment is this: Who gives a fuck if he would or wouldn't drink if he won a million dollars. Irrevelent information. He wrote novels, he was well off, and that's the reason were having this "discussion"...
@Supertramp1966 Excellent point. I guess I'm one of those elitists who always implies, "I understand, but what about the people who don't." Meaning those young people who are stupid enough to think of him as a role model. In a lot of interviews and through his novels he seems to be evangelical about being an drunk. The rest of us poor sober slobs need to look to him for life's answers. I just fear that, as you say, some stupid college kid is malleable enough to believe him.
@Supertramp1966 Bukowski wasn't well off until way later in his life....that crazy bastard lived in alleys and slept with the rats, just look at his face.
Wow iv watched multiple videos of this guy expressing his opinion on different things and he really has no idea what he's talkin about.... A lot of people with extreme depression do EXACTLY that, sleep for multiple days because they have no will or strength or enthusiasm to do anything else. Maybe if ur girlfriend broke up with you n ur having a bad week this would work... But not real depression SMH... This was more retarted then his "it's better for you to be an alcoholic then a pot head" vid
@TheLeeWJohnston This video isn't meant 2b the last word on depression.Still,it conveys positive messages. It's true-as u say-that those with depression can stay in bed for days, but it's also true that those who can be indulgent with themselves(allowing themselves days of relax when needed¬ always demanding perfection/full efficiency from themselves)are less prone 2 suffer from severe stress & clinical depression.Bukowski is inviting everyone to be a bit more human/tolerant with him/herself"
First of all, lose the word "retarted" from your vocabulary. You sound trailer park...Secondly, learn how to spell "retarded" if your going to use it...Thirdly, BUK really does know what he's talking about. Really. He is expressing what worked for him. He's not giving advice for people who are clinically depressed. You should think about your response in the context of the video before responding. BUK is simply giving an opinion from the stance of a highly successful writer.
@Supertramp1966 That means we should offering the the opinion of highly successful readers. I disagree that he's offering a dispassionate opinion of what worked for him. I've seen him dismiss and degrade those sober working stiffs meeting their social and economic obligations. In other words, I'm whipping out that huge ethical shillelagh of "what if everybody did what he did."
I wish that I could have the opportunity to go to sleep for two or three days whenever I am feeling low. The problem is that I am constantly woken up everyday at 6am by the neighbours children.
@watersprite44 Earplugs help, I use soft foam, it costs almost nothing, is from recycled material and takes 33 dB away...If you can afford it, you can even get custom-made ones that block out specific ranges.
It's for the depressed person who is stuck in the rat race of modern society. The general principal is to just clear your head of your mind's troubles. @bahhhmeran i think why it worked for bukowski is because not only did he stay in bed for 4 days, but he also gave himself permission to stay in bed for 4 days.
Go to sleep for three days? What about the depressed people that have been in bed for a month. I think Bukowski knows well how to manage himself but as far as his lifestyle working for everyone else... Not a chance.
@JayGatsbyOdysseus, I've read and own a large majority of his works and Women is not something I would recommend to someone who isn't already well versed is Bukowski. It sat on my shelf half read for a while. Try some of his short stories or Post Office.
Yeah, this is what i've always thought too. When i feel depressed, people always tell me to be positive, but i just relax and take it easy for a while. It feels kind of nice in a way to be depressed...
damn, i'm listening to this for the first time, and i'm amazed! i do that all the time!, two-three days in bed, drinking and eating only when necessary, getting up just for a piss.... gets you in shape! maybe i'm wrong, but this guy lived for 74 years and was one of the greatest writers of the time. rings any bells?

@Supertramp1966 I agree, Ulysses is very difficult. It took me 9 months to read. It took me over a year to read the Bible. I would say these are the two most difficult books I have read. I will research "Ham On Rye. I think you are poking fun at me. I will see.
@Supertramp1966 I researched "Ham On Rye" a little and I don't want to read another Bukowski book. I know enough about Henry Chinaski. Wikipedia describe "Ham on Rye" as similar to "Catcher in the Rye" Well, let me tell you, Salinger was way overrated. He is more overrated than Bukowski. But don't worry for your hero. Bukowski's reputation is growing even though Salinger's is dwindling some. I read Bukowski's Women because a friend gave it to me and U2's Bono loved it. But, it's marginal
Fair enough...One man's garbage is another man's treasure, right. And I wasn't "poking fun at you", aside from my reference to your drinking. It wasn't a literary shot....Having said this, I will stand firm with my stance that Ham On Rye is a wonderfully written novel, true and real. It is NON-FICTION at it's best. Buk suffered as a child, and he suffered as an adult. And that's life. Some people die a quick death, some a slow death. BUK the latter....
@MishuTaste : Now that's an intelligent thought. Do you understand that someone who is bipolar is incapacitated with depression and cannot do anything during this time? Obviously you don't suffer from it and should thank God rather than act as if it's a money thing. Because Buke wasn't always famous, you know. He didn't even publish his first book until he was almost 50! He worked at the post office until 1970 when his first novel came out.
@Havanachan Yep. That's what I'm saying. No offense to Bukowski. I like the guy. I just wish I had that option of calling my boss and saying, "I need a few days off to sleep."

@GordonMorrice very well put my friend, I was just reading the wikipedia entry on social phobia, i totally have that and it applies here and to bukowski's childhood. i love his documentary.
@GordonMorrice "man is an animal who´s essence is to anguish, and the more deeply he feels the anguish, the more deeply human he is" Soreen Kierkegaard, you are not alone, these thoughts of anguish have never left me, they come sometimes at night, very powerful, they torn me apart, sometimes they remain quietly swimming in the depths of my soul, but they never go, but you are not alone my friend, and neither am I
