  • yeeeeeeeeehhhhhh

  • synesthesia

  • lol his art is so shit. like someone coming down from an acid trip

  • @moewishaw oh yah what do you have in your collection? your ideas are quite fomented are they?

  • gigs are the new exhibitions 'round here

  • No he is not! his art is shit he is skint ...hence reunion.

  • stone roses are the greatest band ever but i dont know if i'd want them to reform. everything about them was perfect; best songs ever, top lads, great interviews, events like ally pally, spike island, blackpool, the jackson pollock artwork etc etc. i like the fact that they only did 2 amazing albums. if they stayed together and done 7 albums, inevitably there might have been a dodgy one. people prefer lennon to mccartney coz he died before he did a frog chorus and tarnished his reputation

  • come on john get back with your mates and do some music.

  • I loved his Stone Roses covers.

  • he sounds like salad fingers...

  • top work john...your roses cover's r round my gaff bigtime...

  • shit artist, good musician.

  • maestro

  • lol you just cant imagine him and manny havind a conversation

  • I hate you, look at you talking all wimpery, wallowing in a self-absorbed, miserable facade you call art. Hiding away from humanity. You clearly have a God given talent...you're selfish enough to put a bowl over your light. PS Your "art" is shite.

  • @VincentPaulCaddell You "Hate" him? Really?

Jesus, if someone choosing to exercise their free will and walk away from music is enough to make you "hate" you must be a pretty sad individual yourself.

  • MAESTRO

  • Exhibitions are the new gigs? Well in that case, I'm off to an art gallery to get pissed, scream my head off and jump around like a chimp with thrush.

  • I don't really know if it's an English thing, because Graham Coxon is a great guitarist and pretty versatile and balances both art & music in his lifestyle like Joni Mitchell. Maybe it really is the versatility aspect with Squire. But it sounds like he has a preference now and has made his mind up and guitar is gone for now.. I know you are right in your comment about being a 'what a waste of talent' and I would love to see John Squire strap on a guitar again. It may happen sooner than we think

  • I live near a school that teaches 'rock guitar' and as I pass by I sometimes wonder if there are other John Squires in there ready to go for that axe only to put it down later and admit that it was 'something they did while they were growing up'. As someone who plays an instrument and watching John Squire here, I cannot help thinking 'what a waste of talent'. Why could he not do both? It never stopped Joni Mitchell, Ronnie Wood and various others. Just keep adding to what you already know.

  • @candelise Difference with squire is the fact he was both a good artist and musician from such an early age and after 20 odd years he realised that music wasn't really for him. After watching his recent televised interviews, everyone of them seems to be about art and if that's his chosen career nowadays I respect him for that and his paintings and ideas look pretty good. I do agree with you and it feels like a waste of talent. Just a pity he doesn't do what Coxon does and plays guitar and paints

  • @johnmcluskey True, but Joni had talent from a young age as well. She would say that she ran towards either art when the other dried up. In terms of inspiration, she found that both disciplines could feed the other. I do wonder sometimes if this is part of an English thing whereas on the other side of the pond versatality is in greater supply.

  • i think tbh deep down he wants to do music but hes been put down because the stone roses never were that big even thought they are a great fucking band.

  • @elitemx101

weren't that big............lol, what like who? oashit, blurb? they killed everyone, he has nout to prove

  • @Picnicl Yeah, fair point i guess.

  • "Hey John, do you have to pay the estate of Jackson Pollock royalties since you've been ripping him off completely for over quarter of a century?"

  • 'dour understated Mancunianism' - brilliant!!

  • awesome

  • Whatever path John chooses to take, he'll forever remain a hero!

  • Comment removed

  • You wouldn't want to get stuck in a lift with him.... Just sounds dead boring. His voice never changes tone. But i still love the guy!

  • @bufflyrich Maybe if you asked him some interesting questions you'd get some interesting answers. If he sounds bored, it's probably because he's got this dry academic mind on him through understanding, rather than just following 'fashion'.

  • John what do you think of pink floyd the wall art?????

  • Man, what a load of crap. John's "art" is just second rate shite. "Visual arts" - fuck me. He's wrong too, his "best" art were his Jackson Pollock-lite record covers, that was class man. Now he's just this weird depressed old guy, fucking hell! Get with it bitch, look at Ian! He's living man, taking what this world gives him and just fucking DOES IT! John could play guitar once though he turned into a 4th rate Jimmy Page on the Second Cumming. Had to change into a cunt didn't you?

  • @BombJapan fuck off

  • @joydivision808 He's a troll. I nearly wasted 2 minutes of my life replying to him. lol!

  • @BombJapan

You havent got a clue have you yah cock!!

  • yeah its all very well , but its very unlikely he would be able to show or anybody would give a fuck about his artwork if it wasnt for his magic on the guitar.

  • Its all traits of lonerism.... Im the same, I can relate to him in someway. He is just independent, so let him be...

  • I think he's kidding himself to be honest. I reckon he just doesn't want to lose face and admit he made a BIG mistake, and I think he IS missing it. Although I may be wrong...who really knows. However, his art seems like bollocks to me, and I DO have an appreciation for visual art.

  • @GhibliFan1 the guy needs to get out of jimmy pages arse

  • As naive as it sounds, I just want them all to be happy. They have given so much to so many over the years, they deserve it.

I also think Squire is quite a gifted artist. His work seems very intuitive and brave. I like the way he uses numbers, it makes sense for a musician, doesn't it? After all, rhythm is repetition and it's present in painting, sculpture, music, really every artistic discipline.

  • From the horses mouth, squire WANTS to do a roses reunion, so its not John thats holding it back obviously

  • I find it strange that there is a price tag on the Sally Cinnamon cover? Did he actually go out and buy it? I would have thought he would have had access to as many copies as he wanted? Or maybe he blew it when he through paint all over the Silvertone office?

  • That's what happens when someone has too much talent... being 2 hours a day on stage probably wasn't enough for him to express himself.

It's interesting to think about that he was one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived, and music wasn't even his passion.

  • Man this depressed me. Talk about bitterness and regret killing a mans passion in music.

  • OH Poor Guy ! Let him do what he wants with the rest of his life ! These jerks set up an interview of his art just to ask the most boring question of all time ! You wanna seethese guys come out like it's 1990 ?? So Stupid !! He don't like so let him be !! Jesus H Christ

  • He is just wonderful. He will always be, not just my favorite guitarist, but my favorite ARTIST of all time

  • macclesfields about 20 minutes drive from me! wonder if he fancies a jam? probably not. ill take my watercolours instead!

  • @gallagherisgod89 I'm 20 miles from there too, I'll go halves on the paintbrushes if you want! I think we should bring our guitars anyway though, we'd be silly not to!

Imagine being in John Squires company and he was up for a jam (pie in the sky though the thought is!), but there weren't enough instruments!

I'd be kicking myself non-stop really hard til my dying day!

  • this man is very important in music as a whole, his technique is second to none.i sat for hours trying to learn the fabulous riffs he created in second coming, john is an incredibly talented guy, jackson pollock artwork is all about throwing your mind quickly onto a wall,we can all feel that and it just looks good too,i salute you john.

  • John's arguably always been more into art than he has music, missing rehearsing with the Patrol to make models in his bedroom when he was a lad and that... He's done music now, given it what he can and he was a fuckin top musician. Now he's doin his first passion, art... who can argue with that? Long live John Squire

  • @jamesmcfc No-one can, or has the right to argue with that. I find t odd that some ppl seem to think they have a say in how he runs his life!

That said, how much talent can 1 man have?...I wish he'd left some of it behind for the rest of us!

  • I'm a huge Roses fan from back in the day. Their albums were the first to go on my ipod and John Squire is one of my guitar hero's. But a re-union? By the sounds of Squire in this interview, I`ll be surprised if he can even remember where his guitars are, let alone play them. Get some tunes on, get a bit of sun and have a strum.

  • @Rathers2008 I reckon he will be up for it though, once all the bitterness and pettiness has faded in his and Ian's memory. I fookin hope so anyway!

I'd make that gig whatever the cost, no question!

  • haha John squire is such an English to the bone.

  • jesus fuckin christ what's all this about then? Astounding that he can discard his guitar but what a guy

  • it does annoy me that interwerers cant let stone roses lie. amazing band but let the band members get on

  • Huge fan of Squire and the Roses but his voice puts me to sleep. zzz...

  • @wonderwall4355 That's why he aint the singer.....

  • He looks like a hippie version of Shane McGowan

  • @ghost037 There's no comparison...bollox!

  • im the biggest roses fan there is, and i love squire and brown, but i think they are selfish in that so many of us are so DESPERATE to see it happen and not in an 80's revival way, but for them to finish what they started!!! surely they have to put petty differences aside and do it for the greater good of us all??? and John.....his arts good, but FFS he's one of the greatest guitar players of all time! cmon man get a grip

  • sounds like a fuckin acidhead, put down your brushes, dig out the old guitar, reform the Roses and get a fuckin world tour going

  • everytime I play a guitar I feel like I should owe him royalties ...

  • John Squire was an amazing guitarist and The Stone Roses are such a legendary band. They need to reform oneday just for one show to give something back to their fans. By the looks of things John is the one who doesnt want to reform and Ian is keen aslong as John gives him a call. Fairplay to him he's doing his own thing in art now but come on imagine how amazing a Stone Roses gig would be, John give Ian a bell!

  • do it john! DO IT !!! REFORM THE ROSES!!!! A whole generation needs you!

  • John is god

  • John is god

  • Whats the name of the first song in this video?

cuz I know the second one is Waterfall

  • @iamthatguyman Made of Stone

  • Made of Stone.

Its on the Stone Roses' first album.

  • @iamthatguyman its called 'made of stone' bud

  • i fuckin love the roses im only 16 and missed out on the magic of seeing them live

it pisses me of when chavie dick heads take the piss and listen to that arragont shit they call rnb its not right, not when you got bands like the roses, oasis, the charlatans, the verve and loads more

  • @yougottaloveit100 amen mate, I'm fifteen and an enthusiastic drummer and I hate this scene of music we're in just now. Stuff your akon, n-dubz and lil' wayne, give me the roses any day!

  • Reni defo left first, in fact he left BEFORE the band toured The Second Coming album.

John left and formed The Seahorse's, leaving Mani & Ian Brown.

Mani was then invited to join Primal Scream leaving Ian to flog a dieing horse with invited musicians.

Was a sad ending to one of the soundtracks of my youth.

I did but one of John Squire's Waterfall prints though, I never forget the good times

    ONE LOVE !!!!

  • @Gimme3steps What happened that left everything fall apart though?

  • @pokabeb

Who knows, but loads of rumours. After debut album, the original record label screwed them over and court dates happened, it took 4 years or so to sort out then Geffen came in and wanted an album. John was the only one creative (rumour was drugs with rest) so we came up with Second Coming. Reni felt it was too like Led Zep (strange) so he left before tour. John & Ian (best friends for years) fell out when Ian was in jail over Crimbo & John sent him a Chocolate Orange but didn't visit

  • @pokabeb

Ian then wouldn't talk to John, and John got fed up and left to do his own stuff - first Seahorses then solo stuff. Mani hung around for another 18 months or so before joining Primal Scream. And Ian kept the name going for another year or so with sessions musicians who then became the main stay of his backing band in his own solo stuff just after.

  • I thought reni went first? then squire? oh well. Good to see some of roses on tv now and again

  • I think I heard that, too. Probably got that news on one of these websites that I like to visit. The question is thus: Why did Reni pull out? I think I might understand why Squire called it quits, but can't be entirely sure.

  • inspirational

  • Personally, I enjoyed this video. I didn't know a lot about Squire. I've heard some Stone Roses tunes and I love them; but, Squire's work and his comments on his art were heartfelt. I'll continue, as best I can, to keep up with Squire's artwork. I like seeing him in his studio. He looks comfortable and "chilled out." And, the interviewer knew how to ask intelligent questions--ones that got good responses.

  • I think Squire is wonderful as an artist--visual or otherwise. He has magnitude and depth in his work and I hope he keeps doing what he does.

  • will somebody phone ian and john on to different phones and put them together just to see what happens

  • @starleturb

You can now, its official, they have reformed!

  • @starleturb I did, they reformed. haha

  • I have watched a few of these videos about john squires art and its funny because hes done alot of art for a few years now and looking at most of the comments people are picking up a guitar more than the paint brush because of this man

  • john is a one off. best guitarist ever in the best band ever. must feel great for the roses when they go watch utd play at old trafford when "this is the one" comes on!

  • he sounds like he's in a semi coma

  • @stabesy

    HAHAHAHAHAHAA

  • John Squire was mediocre as a solo artist. Squire knows it but is too proud/bitter to reunite the Roses.

  • One Word: RESPECT!

  • At the end of the day John can do whatever he wants to do. Yes i love The Roses and i enjoy Ian and Johns solo work but if he wants to live the quiet life amongst his brushes then so be it. He will always be a major influence on me picking up a guitar all those years ago. Take it easy John

  • @reniisgod

I totally agree! Love this comment.

I'm the same, the turning point for me when playing guitar was when I worked out how to play "tears". Must have stayed up all night that night playing it over and over. There was no turning back for me after that. I knew Iwould be playing guitar for the rest of my life.

  • @reniisgod I couldn't have said it better myself...

  • @reniisgod Well said, wise words indeed!

  • @reniisgod On the contrary, his artistic scene is anything but a quiet life. He is widely critically acclaimed in the art world.

  • @Slapbass13 Critical acclaim doesn't make for a not 'Quiet life'. You can be critically acclaimed and still live in a fuckin shed ffs. Look at him! it's makin me miserable. It's my opinion, but I have virtually no time for most 'abstract' art

  • Ian continued to make music after The Roses.

John continued only with the coke.

  • @ThereIsARain

That is a large claim, Ian did produce a lot of music as a solo artist.

Dare I say, he produced more than Squire.

  • More in quantity sure-- More in quality? Not a chance! :P To each their own though.

  • Well, at least he is more talkative.

  • Comment removed

  • He wants to reform but doesnt know how. Ian doesnt need too so he wont be the one to reform them. Where the fuck Reni is now is anyones guess!

  • @sugarraygras

no. from the looks of it, the others are up for it but ian doesn't want it.

mani is kind of the link between them all, and he stays in contact with reni

  • John, please put everyone else before yourself.Ian please put everyone else before yourself.

There are people who are getting into your music who find it so hard to understand why you dont play for them. These people deserve that you put aside your differences.Put yourselves in their shoes and do the most generous thing you can for others and reform.

  • thats quality about the feedback from pyschocandy looking like jackson pollock.

thanks for entertaining me with your music john

  • I agree that they should work together again in a creative sense.

I don't think it should be as the Stone Roses though.

The Stone roses were always about that precise moment in time. Not the past, not the future, but that exact moment.

And as for the request for them both to put everyone before themselves. I can't agree.

  • The reason that we all responded to the Roses in the first place is because they were doing music precisely the way they wanted to do it and producing sounds they wanted to hear. It was there independent way of thinking that fueled so much of their creativity.

I don't think it's fair for us to ask them both to live there lives in order to meet other people's expectations.

So yeah, John Squire and Ian Brown working together?

    I'd love to see it.

But as a re-hash of The Stone Roses? No.

  • Music someday will reclain him again, we have to wait... For now let's just enjoy he's happy with art

  • I plan to get a guitar this Christmas because of this man

  • His covers for stone roses records were good, but he's happy to say they were just renditions of what he had seen..Captain Beefheart left music and has reached further with his paintings.Go On John Squire..:

  • I totally get the wax thing! Restraining something you want to express... I dont really like the look of the paintings, some are good...

  • He seems quite a relaxed fellow.

Whatever he does, i wish him best of luck!

  • I don't know enough about modern art to judge. Some of his work I don't understand, but some I really like - on a totally profane level!

I like the man. He comes across as deeply intelligent and as a sensitive soul.

  • @blurry67 He's too sweet to my mind..:)))

  • Squire will never be as good in anything as he was at playing guitar for the roses!

  • John used to work at Cosgrove Hall, where danger mouse and cockle shell bay were made(cartoons)he actually took the job after Bernard Sumner left to form Joy Division, and John did the same,Ian asked him to give his job up to make a go of the Roses,..,PS,..also Squire used to work on the show"BROOKSIDE" (scouse soap)as a runner on the set,..TALENTED GUY,..

  • Comment removed

  • Fuckin' hell John pick up your guitar again for fucks sake.

  • Wow he seems creepy here lol. I quite like his art, they look pretty good.

  • Squire is godly. end of.

  • always smart jews araund artists

  • John Squire is a hero. He created something brand new and perfected it. The sound of his guitar was unique and his partnership with Ian Brown produced something that is one of the best albums ever (forget about yanks and their rolling stone bullshit). Add Reni's revolutionary druming and Mani's bass riffs and you have one of the best bands ever. John Squire gave us so much so if art is his future, he should stick with it. No matter what, he will remain my hero forever.

  • I feel quite sad about him even though he is probably happy as Larry deep inside

  • He forgot mention he wrote the 2nd roses album and the seahorses album as well as 2 solo albums

  • As he finds out that professional art is as much work as being a professional musician I think he will get his lazy ass in gear and start making music again.

  • He's far miles better than the thief Jimmy Page, Squire only played his own songs didn't stole from obscue blues legends... And The STone Roses' elf titled album is more much better than any Led Zep albums. I am a great fan of Led Zep but Stone Roses could only be compared with the beatles and Eric Cantona

  • Hahahahaha only a mancunian could have that kind of arrogance.......but i bet youre not are you?...........are you? ...........but you wish you were dont you? go to Mac and ask sir John what he thinks of your comparison of him and jimmy page, he might paint you a wank picture......backwards ;)

  • Hahahaha, nice to hear from you. No, I'm not born in Manchester. And I don't wish at all because it's over-industrial, I support Liverpool FC and I hate ecstacy. Anyway, I play all the songs that Page wrote and all the songs of The Stone Roses. Page played the 100 years legacy of black people's blues music, altough he was a great virtuoso guitarist, he used so many blues songs as his own songs!Squire was very original, revolutionary and immensly creative in Roses era.He followed the wrong Jimmy

  • hmm sounds very much like the debate of 2 era's again..the old - would a young Mike Tyson beat Ali?....i heard "Parker" ( Noel Gallagher ) say that "Stone Roses" 1st album was the best ever..kinda says it all really..a singer that actually cant sing a note, and a "guitar player" who actually thought HE WAS someone else (Jimmy Page) Page is a "musican" who changed the world..who ever his influence.....bet Reni is the best drummer in the world too? ive heard that one before as well ;) ..hilarious

  • This bloke made me feel like life was worth living when i had fuck all back in the day...

  • Hear fucking hear

  • my hero. legend. real music soul and killer of mtv bullshit.

  • what happined beetween him and ian brown cos i heard there is bad blood?

  • Why don't you read up about it you lazy moron.

  • Squire thought he was Jimmy Page and Brown thought he could sing.

    They were both wrong

  • Squire didnt sound anything like Jimmy Page. What the hell are you taking about? Don't make such ridiculous statements about a band you obviously know nothing about.

  • if you knew anything about music you would know that he stole his whole image and style for the secong coming from Page, but then again I can't condemn your ignorance, very few people have heard that album!

  • True, and i'm one of those who have. I actually preffer it to their first album. I think it would be more accurate to say that he could cite page as an influence - that doesnt mean he stole his style. If we're going down that road, then you might as well say that practically every rock band to follow LZ stole their style.

  • and u thought u knew what u were talking about WRONG

  • You're a fool. Squire is up there with the best British guitarists

  • Brown can sing as good as anyone on records and wrote the best lyrics... What Led Zeppelin (whom I am a big fan) wrote: Stupid black magic, satanism and vice versa nothing to do with simple people. Brown and Squire wrote like Baudelaire and Verlaine.

  • a true genius, would be absolutly amazing to see the roses play, oh to see reni behind those drums again.

  • top bloke!!!

  • i believe John is a genious and people dont really understand just how talented he is

i think he masterminded the stone roses .. just like he masterminds his paintings

    Well done John

  • Why don't you all stop being ignorant selfish wankers. you'd be happy if the roses reformed?? Well squire doesn't want to so shut the fuck and be happy that he's doing something that he loves and enjoys... and to the person who said give them £20 million each! You clearly don't know anything about the Roses if you think they'd reform just for the money.

selfish cunts. just be happy they existed at all and stop whinging. squire owes you all fuck all. it was his band not yours.

  • Well said mate! I agree 100%

  • ken hes a boring auld bastard eh! ruining it for everyone!! his paining looks shite i mean they have a story to him , but step out the bubble john for fuck sake!!!

    roses must reform!

  • for fuck sake john stop wanking off paintbrushes and fucking get the stone roses back

  • yes mate!

  • i agree with jim6600! i would so happy if the stone roses reformed!!!!

  • john, you would fucking make me the happiest man in the world (joint with millions of others) if you just reformed for 1 fucking night

  • His music is better than his artwork by the looks of it

  • He's still got his good looks

  • For God sake someone offer him and Ian £20 million to reform the roses.

  • Get real john. Get the axe back out and get on to the blower to Ian and get it back together. If you can get yourself out of your arse long enough, that is!

  • Agreed! "state of denial" what an arty load of bollox. At least bring out the 3rd solo venture!

  • doesnt trouble him ? fucking troubles me and a million others tho !!

  • i met him today scoree !

  • This might be more interesting than The Seahorses.

  • true

  • i think he needs a slap.

  • There is that classic phrase Never meet your idols, you'll only be disappointed in this case I think hed leave you completely frustrated. You would never get the answers youd hope to hear from him.

It doesnt surprise me he was at the Led Zeppelin reunion, you could hear Jimmy Page on the second Roses album, and after.

He wanted to be the next Jimmy Page & Jackson Pollock by copying them.

Does he not realise he was and still could be the JOHN SQUIRE from THE STONE ROSES.

  • Amen.

  • Exactly! Why cant he have just been John Squire from The Stone Roses, much better!!
