open differentials... based on the video they're working great for you but usually they're not good for offroad at all... i've got quadra drive on my 04 wj with limited slip differentials. but hey you sure showed that hill!!! only in a JEEP!!
thats impressive. i have a '96 zj and with open differentials. does your wj have any kind of traction or stability control systems that help with drecting power or are they just open differentials alone?
@jbearss04 well the selec-trac/quadra-trac2 system will transfer power back and forth between axles depending on traction. It is an awesome system for open diffs and the power of it can be shown here. Those tires should have no grip whatsoever on this snow covered hill
I am thinking of getting a Liberty with selec-trac. Do you like the system? Judging by the video you are saying the 4x4 fulltime isn't great in deep snow as you kind of got stuck, but isn't it good in lighter conditions and you can put it in 4x4 part-time for better traction in snow? I just want opinions from people that drive them. Most Liberty's have the command-trac part time system but I'm worried my wife will bind it up using the 4x4 on dry pavement or something...let me know!
@kingv911 That hill is much steeper than it looks, I even slipped walking up it (you can see in the vid) the jeep with open diffs and PERFORMANCE tires was able to start from a complete standstill and gain speed and traction up the hill in 4 full time... I doubt there is any other mid sized SUV with a similar setup that could come remotely close
I see. I'm more than likely getting an 05 liberty with selec-trac next week so I'll get to test it out myself. How's your fuel economy been? Most people have told me they average 17-18mpg - is it that bad? Does the fuel economy really suck when in fulltime 4x4?
jeeps 4wd all time acts like AWD that is it stays in RWD until it senses a slip then transfers power back and forth depending on traction, no noticable MPG should be lost in RWD or 4WD as the same amount of power that would go to 2 wheels is split among 4, no extra power is necessary... grand cherokees and libertys are very different, the white WJ has the 4.0 engine, your liberty probably has a 3.7, we get around 17-21 when we were stock, with a lift and big thread tires its 9-17
@KompressorV12 to give you a heads up, the NV242 transfer case doesnt transfer power back and forth in fulltime 4wd...its a static 48/52 awd setup...no clutch to transfer power. the open center diff works wonders on snow and ice and when it gets too deep you can lock the center diff.

Nice Vid Very Nice Jeep. the rims make the jeep Pop. Since you have selec trac T-case, was the jeep in 4 wheel part time or 4 wheel full time?
