awww adorable, i cant imagine how Hollywood could give these guys a bad name, i wish people would stop with all the horrible comments, i used to breed these guys but they all got to old and are now dead :( but I'm getting more soon, hopefully
They are so cute! They look like little bull terriers! And I love their little squiggly pink tails. I have a mouse, not as smart as a rat but I definitely love rodents, they are great pets! Too bad they have such a bad reputation.
my rats are about the size of a guini pig (and no they are not fat just naqtraly large i guess) sweet little guys though domestic rats are very smart safe and clean no matter what people say about them
aw, adorable. I once had a few mice (all female luckily) but I honestly wasn't too fond of them. I've always wanted to try getting a pair of rats someday though, since I heard that they are usually more intelligent than mice and generally more fun to have
@zacefronfan2008 Just to let you know. Rats and mice are wonderful creatures and have amazing personalities. I had a few ratties in my life and they are wonderful animals. Think before you comment, it could upset some people. -.- And btw rats and mice are used for food for other animals but these ones are the nice, tamed and loving ones.
@sealygirl123 I hate when guys like that comment and don't know what they're talking about. I've had them as well, they are so intelligent, and incredibly clean. People need to do their research before they talk! Hollwood puts out such a bad name for these awesome critters
@zacefronfan2008 if you hate rats so much, why bother even making stupid ass comments. humans are the dirty ones-you should know, look in the mirror. rats are wonderful creatures.
@CalciumMoonCheese its actually pretty expensive and time consuming.unless your able to have 5-6 cages and are able to house ALL rats from the litter if none of them get adopted then you really shouldn't breed. i wanted to breed my rat Charles but after doing a bunch of reserch i decided it was best for me and my other rats no to breed, or to at lease hold it off for another year or two before i decide again. go to google or bing and type in rat breeding, a lot of helpful links will pop up.
@KenzKenzMariee I think it's because it's kind of like some bushes or something, my rats used to love to do that too :) Rats have the instinct not to be out in the open, because it would make them fall prey to a hawk in the wild, so they naturally love to be in little corners, boxes, or in this instance, hair :) I am not sure about this, you could look it up, but I'm pretty sure that's why. Also, I'm not quite sure if they would be good on a bed, I never tryed that when I had mine.
Dear anyone, I could really use some help. I have two seven weeks old male rats, got them yesterday. Now, when in their travelling box, they were very curious and active. They got shyer by the minute when in the cage. I took away some of their hiding places and now they seem more active. So, does anyone know how I can make them less anxious and learn them to trust me? the food tricks don't seem to work...
@MissyWaagen Time is the best answer in my experience. They will not be your best friend overnight. I usually start by talking to them all the time to get them used to you. I will let them in my lap while I watch tv or run around the bed .
@MissyWaagen if your still curious, time. when you get rats they will always be shy at first. when they run around the room when you let them out just sit down and read a book or something. they'll be curious and will start to explore you. even if the food trick doesn't work have a few treats to give to them when they get close to you. my rat Charles was shy but now he's one of the most people friendly rat i know. beware that all rats have a different perosnality.
@BeerCanBeachKitty rats love to chase cats, my rat plays with my cat. of corase be careful, but if its the normal house cat who has never seen a rodent in his/her life then you should be safe, though introduce them through the cage first, our rats and cat met by accident so i'm glad she was fine with them. also some rats will bite the cats tail and go carpet sking,(fun for rats, not so much for cats) others will be like mine and want to play and groom the cat.
@BeerCanBeachKitty Well, since pet rats go in cages I think you would be alright, unless your cat is one of the smarty pants kind and can open cages, locks, etc. But make sure you know what you're doing! Rats CAN be time consuming, and you might not have the time for one. Also, they are best to come in two's, my sweeties would have been lost without each other, and rats naturally like to sleep in a pile (it's actually really cute, like just a little mound of fur)
That is so sweet. Here in Florida there are no rescues and hardly anyone with rats. The only available in my city were some juveniles that were from an unplanned litter. I know they do not live long but I hand-built them a large 3 level cage and they've gone from very skittish to puppies that run up, lick, and climb on people. Nearing year two I debate on the offer I immediately declined to breed one with my friend's Siamese. All our other pets are fixed, we are passionate about no breeding.
i agree with theprayerx, if you give some of the babys to a pet shop for instance, a lot of them are used for reptile food, so breeding a lot of them will bring more pet rats!
@GAXxJUNAIDxXGA Not to go all know-it-all on you, but actually it's good to keep the father rats away from the mothers, and especially the babies, they can eat the babies, or do something else terrible. To be truthfull, they don't care at all.
@mrsmarshmallowmush Actually, that's completely incorrect. I used to breed rats and we kept the father with the babies and they NEVER had a problem. Don't confuse rats with mice; rats don't eat their young (certainly not in my experience), and will, in fact, adopt the babies of others.
@NoonJoon, It's just like cats and dogs. There are WAYYY too many in the world. So why would you want to keep adding on to it? :) I think you should breed ONLY if you're very responsible and make sure they all go to good homes :)
@NoonJoon I think only if you treat them badly and dump them, or maybe there are already enough rat breeders in your area, then it makes it so there is more rats wanting homes, it's hard to find a person looking for rats! Make sure you're prepared for anything, it would be very sad to have to give babies to a pet shop, because it's terrible in a pet shop for a little rat!
@wendyXpeggyXpancho - No, I'd say it, too. With 74 babies in total, -some- form of population control is needed. Might as well be something that's going to have to eat something anyway, and baby rodents are eaten all the time. Billions of times per day, in fact. Every day. All around the world.
@ZachariasLePuertre, There's a differece between pet rats and feeder rats :\ Those rats were rescued from death and then you're just gonna give them to a snake. There's something mentally wrong with snake people :\
@wendyXpeggyXpancho What's the difference? "Feeder rats" are just "pet rats" nobody wants as far as I can tell. Same species, same general breeding stock (you can have lab rats (albinos) for pets, they're just as intelligent and sociable as "normal" pet rats). There's something mentally wrong with people who arbitrarily say "It's okay to kill this, but not this, even though they're the same thing"...
@ZachariasLePuertre I agree, But "feeder" rats generally aren't as healthy since the breeders focus on maximum production vs Health. From the breeder's perspective they figure not to bother with reducing illness and abnormalities since the animals are considered "doomed". Lab mice and Rats are actually bred with rather high health standards to minimize experiments being skewed by natural maladies. I loved my rats... but only feeders are legal where I'm at, and they tended to have problems :(
@ZachariasLePuertre, Pets rats are pets and feeder rats are raised to be snake food. :\ It isnt right to kill animals. period. If you have a animal that has to eat other live animals, (such as snakes) I don't think they should be pets. :\ I don't really have anything else too say.
@wendyXpeggyXpancho No, it isn't. Pre-killed are usually killed humanely - via Co2 or cervical dislocation. Both are painless methods when done right. I don't know where you're getting your information from, but it's either false or they're not doing it right. BTW, I've defended these animals on glue trap videos so please don't call me heartless, you ignoramus.
@andrewjackson187 maybe you sould get one! With enough time, you can find a rat breeder near you, and have a happy little life with your cute little furball :)
Thank you so much for rescuing them -- rats are the best! The little hooded one who was licking the person's hand looks just like my Darwin used to. He passed away, and I miss him and his brother, Mendel, every day. :(
But, can you tell their sexes apart early enough to seperate them so they don't all start breeding all over again? Or have you got enough homes ready for them all if they do? They are very cute though, I love how some baby animals are practically born ready to wash their little faces, and no whinging about bath time like humans!
@Melayahm01 Yes, or else no pet shop would probably sell them, because it would be chaos. You'll be able to see if a rat is a boy or a girl in the first hours of it's life if you know how, so there's no worries :)
I am a new (1 year) rat keeper . . they are gorgeous, loving, affectionate, friendly, amusing and pain in the ass pets lol. They are so damned intelligent. I really love them to bits. They are not just pets . .they are friends.
Thank you for rescuing. I'm afraid I have to agree - There are way too many animals of all species being dumped in humane societies or on the side of the road to be breeding them.
They are so cute!!! I am so glad that they were rescued. Hope they all found wonderful loving homes too. Even though they are adorable I will leave the breeding to the professionals and would never let mine breed.
@Giesji Because so many people breed their pets just because they want to see cute babies, so they are way overpopulated and most just end up being put down or in shelters. In the past 20 or so years the average lifespan of pet rats had decreased dramatically mostly because of inbreading. People get a male and female from the petstore and then guess what! 2 turns into 10 highly inbred rats because the original 2 rats were most likely brother and sister
@INamedMyRatWaffles Did you even read my very short comment? How is it irrisposible if you TAKE GOOD CARE of them?
If the pet store made the mistake of giving someone a male and female or have brothers and sisters in the same cage when they are more than 5-6 weeks, I'd say you have the right to force the pet store to buy the young ones back, and hopefully learn how to sex them.
And if they can't sell them, they can be used for feeding snakes, and thats also good for something.

@alfo149 rats did not cause the plague, fleas biting rats, than humans caused it. the rats themselves did not have the plague, even if you got bitten by one, you still wouldnt have gotten it. i looove rats!!
OMG SO FREAKIN CUTE!!!!! :0 ITHINK I'VE JUST DIED!! U R SOOOO LUCKY!! I LKE THE HOODED ONE IN YOUR HAND WHEN ITS WASHING!! THAT MY FAV BUT I LOVE THEM ALL!
I dare say, it's not so irresponsible if you're breeding them for pets or reptile food - but breed only what you need, not to excess. It's wreckless to let them breed unchecked, no doubt there - you can have millions in a matter of months just from 4 or 5 initial breeders. Keep the males separate from the females untill ready to breed them, and re-segregate them when breeding is done.
I say this cuz bred rodents are healthier than catching wild for the same purposes. Some breeding is okay imho.
@ZachariasLePuertre your right, w/t mice you can end up with around 30 pinkies with only 4 mother mice if their together, if you have one you still have a chance of 12, or 9 sense the single mothers weed out 4 or so.
whoever breeds mice or rats need to be careful and if they accidently end up with unwanted offspring need to separate them or give the offspring to a pet shop. the last thing an environment needs is a lot of loss mice that can cripple it in a month.
awww theyre so little and cute! and now theyre licking you awww :3 i just got 2 boys a few weeks ago theyre not even a year old they do everything together and steal food from eachother theyre too cute lol

Melayahm01 6 months ago

ImHereForMJ 6 months ago
It's not irresponsible to breed them, it's just irresponsible to leave them in a shoebox on the side of the road.

They are so cute!!! I am so glad that they were rescued. Hope they all found wonderful loving homes too. Even though they are adorable I will leave the breeding to the professionals and would never let mine breed.

Why is it irresponsible to breed rodents or allow them to become pregnant, if you take good care of them?
Giesji 7 months ago
@Giesji Because so many people breed their pets just because they want to see cute babies, so they are way overpopulated and most just end up being put down or in shelters. In the past 20 or so years the average lifespan of pet rats had decreased dramatically mostly because of inbreading. People get a male and female from the petstore and then guess what! 2 turns into 10 highly inbred rats because the original 2 rats were most likely brother and sister
INamedMyRatWaffles 6 months ago
@INamedMyRatWaffles Did you even read my very short comment? How is it irrisposible if you TAKE GOOD CARE of them?
If the pet store made the mistake of giving someone a male and female or have brothers and sisters in the same cage when they are more than 5-6 weeks, I'd say you have the right to force the pet store to buy the young ones back, and hopefully learn how to sex them.
And if they can't sell them, they can be used for feeding snakes, and thats also good for something.

@alfo149 rats did not cause the plague, fleas biting rats, than humans caused it. the rats themselves did not have the plague, even if you got bitten by one, you still wouldnt have gotten it. i looove rats!!

freshh1999 8 months ago
I dare say, it's not so irresponsible if you're breeding them for pets or reptile food - but breed only what you need, not to excess. It's wreckless to let them breed unchecked, no doubt there - you can have millions in a matter of months just from 4 or 5 initial breeders. Keep the males separate from the females untill ready to breed them, and re-segregate them when breeding is done.
I say this cuz bred rodents are healthier than catching wild for the same purposes. Some breeding is okay imho.
ZachariasLePuertre 8 months ago
@ZachariasLePuertre your right, w/t mice you can end up with around 30 pinkies with only 4 mother mice if their together, if you have one you still have a chance of 12, or 9 sense the single mothers weed out 4 or so.
whoever breeds mice or rats need to be careful and if they accidently end up with unwanted offspring need to separate them or give the offspring to a pet shop. the last thing an environment needs is a lot of loss mice that can cripple it in a month.
but i agree with you
