I am not sure the analogy is a right one.. Russia may not be on the side of USA fully as far as Iran is concerned but certainly no longer an enemy of the West or USA...... The key to all this will be China who are keeping closed lips

The purpose of missile defense is sold as protecting civilian population centers. But military strategy is ALWAYS attack the other country(s) ability to wage war. In other words, destroy their military. So, while the US is protecting the cities the other country(s) are attacking army, naval, air force facilities. The cities then become the spoils of the victor.
