terrific.thanks for posting this bomberguy.my dad flew in these from 1942-1945 as a wireless operator/air gunner out of south africa.he was in 262 sqdn. raf.on one occasion they caught a uboat on the surface which damaged the cat. and the uboat was damaged by depth charges.love the music too-very appropriate.
What whas kept secret for a long time was that the pilot of the PBY was an American (at that time the US was still officially neutral and that could have been considered an act of war. It was actually a training flight not aa search for the Bismark and they found it accidentally. The person in the interview was likely the co-pilot. Excelent video.
Usual fantastic and interesting subject matter. Thank you. Could you please let me know who is performing the "Daddy" Backing track. Too upbeat for Julie London!
Might have had a diversion ... "In August 1941 three Catalinas arrived (at RAF Invergordon, Scotland) from Lough Erne on a secret mission, but packing cases marked S N S O Archangel gave away their destination. Their mission was to transport hurricane spares and key personnel to Grasna near Murmansk after one of the aircraft had taken 21½ hours for the trip due to an electrical storms. Returning with other passengers one Catalina had to force land at Whallsey in the Shetlands.""
Catalina PBY-5 / Mk1 AH545 / WQ-Z 209 sqn Entered service April 1941
Flew from Castle Archdale Lough Erne, Northern Ireland till July 1941. Iceland in August for 2 months before returning to the UK at RAF Pembroke Dock. Attacked U-81 on 30 Oct 1941 before the Catalina was lost on patrol on July 15 1942.
At some point possibly in October? 1941 it was equipped at the MAEE (Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment, Scotland) with ASV MkII and trials Leigh Light.
Amazing video, Bomberguy!! If you remember the Bismark movie, the PBY really was lucky as the battleship had radar fir control for it's FLAK batteries as well!

It's interesting how the officer is attempting to talk in a BBC accent and maintain a portrait pose throughout.

Where were the Bismark's AR-196 small catapult-launched seaplanes to ward off the large PBY seaplanes?

The son of Jack Costeau was killed in a PBY when it flipped over on landing. This may have put a damper on civilian PBY use.
