One image from the riots I'll always have. I remember my uncle standing in Windsor, looking across the river (the border was closed and we couldn't go back home). The views of the city burning were horrific. It was the only time in my life I saw him crying. He knew that the Detroit he had grown up in and loved would never be the same.
The riots weren't started by a racial incident, & there were in fact few racial incidents during the riots, but civil rights were the main underlying issue since most of the DPD was white back then & a good # were racists & too authoritarian to all citizens. Remember 'the Big 4' or more, they bopped anybody if they felt like it. The looting was done by many young whites as well as blacks & mixed groups were filmed looting on Grand. Blvd. etc. & many whites were also arrested etc.

Read up on the history of Detroit after the race riots, and especially after the first Mayoral election after the riot. The new Mayor was a pure racists. This didn't seem like a racial issue; from my studies, whites on the upper East side of Detroit particpated in the riot as well, looting stores. I don' t think anyone "burned down their own homes", it's ridiculous to suggest that. As the report said, there were some fires the DFD just couldn't get to due to lack of projection, and fires spreaded. 1/4 of blacks owned their on homes. This was a revolt by the "have nots" black and white. this had nothing to do with values; but opportunity.

I don't know how many of you lived through this event. I did. I was born in Detroit and knew it as an exciting and vibrant city. Yes, there was an undercurrent of class/racial divisions. But the so-called riot was not motivated by a specific "racial incident." It was lead by outsiders and the news media only magnified the incident. The rapid epansion of Oakland County resulted from this, as the next haven for "white flight" based on this manufactured fear imposed on white residents.

Here is the truth of the situation, prior to the '67 riots there was already a white flight mentality. The wealthier Detroiters began moving to the Points( Grosse Pointe). When the upper crust of society, be it black or white, moves out there goes the higher level taxs dollars that are used for city investments. Also they create a trend that begins to be mimicked by the middle class. a.k.a. "Suburbia".

A 6 pm curfew was strictly enforced city-wide because the summer of '67 was such a rough time. I was born in the spring of '68 my earliest memories were of a house on MacMillan between McKinstry & Lansing (it's still there according to Google Maps). It always struck me as odd the way other large cities had refurbishment plans but Detroit never did. The riots plus 20 years of Mayor Young not only drove that once-great city into the ground, but broke it off rather permanently. Mayor Young SUCKED!

Suddenly after the riots he went from being my friend to a nigger thug. He busted out three of my windows. When I asked him why he said "CUZ YOUSE WHITEY!!!" He died 2 day later.. got shot when he tried to loot a TV froma store and shot at a cop....he was 11. Not about race? Think again. I never went back after i moved in '70.

One image from the riots I'll always have. I remember my uncle standing in Windsor, looking across the river (the border was closed and we couldn't go back home). The views of the city burning were horrific. It was the only time in my life I saw him crying. He knew that the Detroit he had grown up in and loved would never be the same.

The riots weren't started by a racial incident, & there were in fact few racial incidents during the riots, but civil rights were the main underlying issue since most of the DPD was white back then & a good # were racists & too authoritarian to all citizens. Remember 'the Big 4' or more, they bopped anybody if they felt like it. The looting was done by many young whites as well as blacks & mixed groups were filmed looting on Grand. Blvd. etc. & many whites were also arrested etc.

This didn't seem like a racial issue; from my studies, whites on the upper East side of Detroit particpated in the riot as well, looting stores. I don' t think anyone "burned down their own homes", it's ridiculous to suggest that. As the report said, there were some fires the DFD just couldn't get to due to lack of projection, and fires spreaded. 1/4 of blacks owned their on homes. This was a revolt by the "have nots" black and white. this had nothing to do with values; but opportunity.

I don't know how many of you lived through this event. I did. I was born in Detroit and knew it as an exciting and vibrant city. Yes, there was an undercurrent of class/racial divisions. But the so-called riot was not motivated by a specific "racial incident." It was lead by outsiders and the news media only magnified the incident. The rapid epansion of Oakland County resulted from this, as the next haven for "white flight" based on this manufactured fear imposed on white residents.

It was a caculated plan to promote Real Estate sales in Oakland County to play on the fears of middle aged Middle Class White people already living on the outer edges of the city. The "riot" started on a Sunday afternoon, and the following day phones were ringing from "speculators" calling with scare tacticis, playing up the "white flight"

Houston has tons of different businesses because it's business friendly. It's also very family friendly, no state tax, etc. There is good reason why people move to Texas after "the next big thing" fails.

Detroit leaders need dialog, an exchage of positive, productive ideas, and cooperation. They need to find a way to make Detroit attractive to young professional who can be a catalyst for growth. The auto industry is gone; a new industry needs to be built. It will take time, but it can be done.

Remember also that it wasn't just southern black workers but also poor white Appalachian coal miners that began coming to the city looking for work in the Auto Industry. You can still find there relatives in the city to this day.

@455Transam heres a perfect example...canada has one of the lowest murder rates in the world, but in there big cities they have a big poverty and homelees problem, not to mention ALOT of drug addicts...but yet there muder rate is 4 times lower then ours, the usa. why is this? im no racist but anyone should be able to put this equation together..the african american population in canada is 2.5 percent, very small obviously. so in the big cities and ghettos its like 85% white.

I was there i was 10 when the riots broke out. I used to play with a black boy across the street on Freeland. I never though of him as black, just as my friend. Suddenly after the riots he went from being my friend to a nigger thug. He busted out three of my windows. When I asked him why he said "CUZ YOUSE WHITEY!!!" He died 2 day later.. got shot when he tried to loot a TV froma store and shot at a cop....he was 11. Not about race? Think again. I never went back after i moved in '70.

Here is the truth of the situation, prior to the '67 riots there was already a white flight mentality. The wealthier Detroiters began moving to the Points( Grosse Pointe). When the upper crust of society, be it black or white, moves out there goes the higher level taxs dollars that are used for city investments. Also they create a trend that begins to be mimicked by the middle class. a.k.a. "Suburbia".
