Shouldn't it be a requirement to have run-flat tires on a big rig? Would it even work for a large truck? This video just shows with all possible clarity that society cannot afford big rigs without blowout protection. The screams are heartbreaking, and I truly hope nobody was seriously hurt.
It does look like the truck blew a front tire, When that happens it's a bitch to control it. I was OTR driver and something I remember in training was if the front tire blows , don't hit your brakes, because you will die !!! You have to slow it down , but at 70 mph, thats hard to do !!

Having driven big rigs for numerous years and nodding off at the wheel more times than I care to remember I think the old boy just plain dozed off. From what I seen in the video the driver of the truck swerved in the wrong direction to avoid rear ending the cars that were stopping in front of him. A good reason why no matter what kind of vehicle you are in, if you are coming to a complete stop on a 70+ mph interstate, turn on your 4-way flashers as soon as you realize you are going to come to a stop. He was probably following to close, he was stupidly over gross on his weight, he may have been texting, but I doubt he was methed up.

@af9126 i used to drive 5,000 lbs overweight all the time in a van so I wouldnt think 16,000 is that much for a tractor trailer. Until you are forced with the situation to have to travel in a vehicle that is carrying too much goods its hard to say anything about that driver. I had to haul material and guys 150 miles every day in a 15 passenger van that I took the seats out of and I will tell you first hand if you refuse to carry all the goods then you might as well look for another job!

The right lane was blocked and traffic was backing up quickly and the driver was speeding while not paying attention. If you weren't there, just make note of the traffic around the red Peterbilt before he veered left.
Whoever said it was the trucks' fault is obviously dumb. I have ridden on that highway many times with my cousin (he is a truck driver) and he tells me how "slick" the highway can be. Before you start blaming the truck driver for the accident, look at the truck drivers' point of view, not just the "victims" or I would add the truck driver as a victim too, won't I?
If a steer tire blows your only hope is to HAMMER DOWN and hope that forward momentum keeps you straight long enough to bring the truck to a safe(r) stop. If your steering arm goes... god be with you.

Being over weight and having bald tires were what they found after the fact, not necessarily the cause. As suddenly as the truck veered to the left it had to have been a mechanical failure, like broken suspension or steering component, other than blow steer tire, if it weren't a medical emergency.

when you see half a dozen cars to your right fly by, just because you are in the HOV lane doesn't mean you won't have to slow down for traffic also. I never pass any car more than 15 MPH faster than them. Too bad these kids were already speeding, they had no where to evade. I've been hit in the winshield by flying tire scrap. You never know when something weird will happen... but no one drives a safe braking distance. Now i drive a bicycle and enjoy HUMAN speeds.
Steering arm broke on the truck.. There was nothing the truck or cars around him could do....Before you start passing the blame game drive down 65mph and pull the steering wheel to the left as hard as you can and let's see if you stop before hitting the wall on a 3 lane highway.

ALL truck companies are required by law to do random drug and alcohol testing.This is federal law and is audited by VERY strict administrators.
There was a time when illegal drugs were commonplace in the industry,but those are over.

When the chaos settled, the mangled Audi was crushed under the truck and against the concrete median.
Miraculously, the driver survived, and was reported to be alert and moving his limbs when he was taken to a hospital. He was listed in stable condition. Eight people were hurt on the bus.
The tractor-trailer's driver was cited for, among other things, bald tires and driving a truck 16,000 pounds overweight.

@vibe2fast I don't think that trucker done that intentionally, if I was in his position (I have the license too) and was cut off, I'll either kill the guy who cut me off and turn his car into a beer can, or I'll steer right to try to avoid an accident. Seems to me this is more like a serious mechanical failure or trucker falling a sleep and when he realize it's too late...

@defencerulez Your 100% correct except for one thing...if you are loaded, you NEVER cut that wheel to avoid accidents. You'll possibly kill yourself, and definitely kill whoever happens to be next to the trailer as it's going over. If your empty, that's a different story.

Lets face the facts... alot of truck drivers are small wimpy guys that cant get laid so they drive big trucks to make them feel big. Being over weight and having bald tires were what they found after the fact, not necessarily the cause. As suddenly as the truck veered to the left it had to have been a mechanical failure, like broken suspension or steering component, other than blow steer tire, if it weren't a medical emergency.

@lightbee101 if you notice its a trash hauler! always overweight and forget about tires. the truck probably should not have been on the road... i will say most of those who haul trash do not take good care of their equipment. I drive the L.I.E. everyday in a big truck... mostly 4 wheelers are the cause of the accidents. but after an inspection the truck will be blamed even if it wasnt their fault!

when you see half a dozen cars to your right fly by, just because you are in the HOV lane doesn't mean you won't have to slow down for traffic also. I never pass any car more than 15 MPH faster than them. Too bad these kids were already speeding, they had no where to evade. I've been hit in the winshield by flying tire scrap. You never know when something weird will happen... but no one drives a safe braking distance. Now i drive a bicycle and enjoy HUMAN speeds.

Steering arm broke on the truck.. There was nothing the truck or cars around him could do....Before you start passing the blame game drive down 65mph and pull the steering wheel to the left as hard as you can and let's see if you stop before hitting the wall on a 3 lane highway.

@Hordetuff Yea his control arm on his left side cracked which means that he lost his steering, lost his left side brakes and he also was dragging his left contro, arm which forced it left faster then just pulling the steering wheel left. people just assume these days.

The black car in the crash was audi tt. The guy survived with minor injuries to the head and you couldn't believe that by looking at the wreck. He was in hospital on the bed and talking to his wife. I saw the whole report.
