  • I remember seeing these exact photos published in a railroad magazine many years ago. Forgot which one. Nice ones!

  • love that horn.. sharks always sounded,. well. like sharks!

  • The old Michigan Northern ran a few back in the 1970s as well....

  • great video. Those "sharks" had presence like the "Ludmillas" in europe. Industrial design for railroads seems to have died now. Look at the GE class 70 for the UK! Ugly or what?

  • I like this shark, thank you. I have a model D&H 1216 by Bachmann.

  • I own a Tyco Baldwin RF-16 Sharknose. I wonder if it had glass in the cab?

  • These engines have to be one of the classic designs and shapes of any piece of industrial equipment! They are much modelled nowadays and I have 2 ER RF16 A units and a Bachmann B unit ready to go when I get on with my track layout! As a kid in Montreal, I had a Tyco RF16 model. Now living in the UK, I would make the trip to where ever in the USA (any excuse actually!) to see these locos if they are ever run! Thanks for the pics. Here's hoping!

  • @TCSC47 Did the Tyco RF-16's have glass in the cab?

  • @RuralRustbucket It was in 1956 0r 57 I think! I don't think it had any glazing in the windows, but I can not be sure. The body was of unpainted cast metal. I never got around to painting it. I was only 8 and probably would have made a mess of it, but I should have tried. I can still remember its weight and feel (cold metal) that are not found on modern plastic models.

  • There are two sharknose in a warehouse in Michigan in need of restoration. .

  • i love the baldwin sharks

  • Great pics and sound! The sharks might have been the handsomest freight cabs. The PA's get my vote for best looking passenger diesels. Of course, there really weren't any ugly cab units.

  • 2 of the rf16's survive 2day.

  • it would be neat to see these run again!

  • Great Locomotives, thanks for the video

  • I saw these units when they were owned by the Michigan Northern in Cadillac Mich. They were idling at the ex PRR Yard off US 31. I was privileged to be given permission to photograph the cab.. I never saw them in operation. The MNRR was owed & operated by a group of railfans who ran Alco RS3 locos before ending up with GP9's. As for the THIEF, One bad apple spoils the WHOLE bunch!!!!

  • I called ELS and they said they had them!

  • I know, the Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad was rumored to keep their RF-16s in storage at Wells, Michigan.

  • What happened to the ELS's RF-16s? Thanx fur sharin'!

  • ELS is really hurting themselves here.

  • the idiots that stole the maintenance manuals and builders plate are the ones that hurt us all. I don't blame the owner for protecting the things he owns. It stinks, but that's the way it is. I don't envy the people that stole that builder plate, no way you could move it or show it off, everyone will know where it came from!!!

  • Glad you liked! The only C-liners left are in Canada, at various museums.

If you want to see more Baldwin photos & clips, check out my website, The Baldwin Diesel Zone. (Link won't post)

  • Thanks for the info. I would like to see a picture of the cab of a Sharknose and a C-Liner. If you know of any please send me the link.

  • Looks like the conductors windshield is out of #1216. Anyone know if any "C-Liners" still exist.

Thos Baldwin engines still have that"clankity-clankity" sound to them, love the horn too.

    Thanks for this.

  • It's possible. Dad was a brakeman but at the time he was working for Amtrak in 1976. Cannot remember when he retired from the D&H. My dad's name was Tom Remsen. Does that ring a bell?

  • Where did he work out of Targetsignal2,my dad worked for the D&H back in the seventies out of Oneonta?

  • Well my dad worked out of Ft.Edward,NY. The yard office is still there and operating however the engine shed is gone because it burnt down when I was about 5 years old.

  • Oh My God! My dad remembers actually seeing these! He worked for the D&H when I was a little girl as a brakeman. He started working for them in 1967.

  • I wonder if I ran into your dad? I really miss the D&H!

  • Yeah, D&H 1205 & 1216 would be really cool to see these days. As well as ALCO PA's, FM Erie-Builts, C-liners, etc.

  • it would be real cool if they still used them today!

  • The owner had no choice but to lock them up. At one time there was easy access to them but unfortunately The units have had parts stolen off of them, reportedly, but guys claiming to be railfans. Sad that it takes one or two incosiderate fools to spoil it for everyone :(

  • In a shed in Mich. by the owner. Not railfan friendly either!

  • The Rf-16 are in Wells, MI Outside of Escanaba on the ELS ( Escanaba and Lake Superior). The ELS is not railfan friendly. They also have lots of other Baldwins. John Larkin's the owner and got very mad when A) the Michigan Northern burned a traction motor in 1205 and broke the crank in 1216 and B) when a railfan stole the build plate when he had them on display. So if you dont work one the ELS good luck seeing them.

  • @Baldwindiesels Can you blame the guy. couple railfans stole the builders plates off his sharknose.

  • And they've been locked up for over 20 yrs.!

  • Locked up where?

  • Escanaba I believe.

  • Those units looked strange even 'back in the day'!
