Now they are fast. Really. 45 Mph is a lot for 90 tons of steel. This truck with an M1A2 on board weighs almost three times what a standard 18-wheeler do. I'd love to see a fully-loaded brake test. Or this thing smashing trough a house.
@soberek yep an up armored HET and empty M1000 weight out at 1000,000 pounds almost on the dot. thats nice since a M984A1E1 (my favorite) or A2/4 hemtt wrecker has a GCVW of 155,000 lbs. but they were tested to tow a fully loaded het at over 250,000 lbs. hemtt's wreckers are beasts. never really got to load mine out just grossed 100,000 with it. hardly noticed it though
@shive0694 because the weight of the vehicles would destroy the roads. the m1a2 abrams weighs close to 70 tons, the 5th vehicle, the m88a1 weighs close to 60 tons. and the final 4 vehicles are m577 which weighs roughly 13 tons. The tracks were designed to let them move over soft surfaces such as mud and sand.
@shive0694 its more expensive driving the tanks to the destonation. the abrams tank is a very thirsty beast when its operating. hauling them on trailers save gas money and extends the life on tank tracks. driving a 70 ton tank on the interstate is much different than driving a 10 or 15 ton mack truck.
@shive0694 I ask myself that almost all the time. It would be pretty amazing seeing something like an M60A1 travel highway speeds with little pad wear and high fuel efficeincy, for a mbt of course, which would be a bit over a mile to a gallon. Would certainly get the crews of the vehicles acquinted to their vehicles, and would also serve, almost, as a preperation for war if you think of how M1s followed the highways and roads all the time.
I love throwing that bitch in neutral on that huge ass hill going into Mosul, with a up armor bulldozer (D9) on the back. A truck that is supposed to max at 47 MPH I swear I doubled that but probably not. Still a freaky feeling to be that high off the ground and going that fast in a HET! Especially when you see an IED crater up ahead and little time to dodge it..!!
The max load on the trailer is supposed to be 70 tons. We often exceeded this in Iraq with the newer M1's which, with extra armor and systems, often weighed in upwards of 80 tons. I worked with this system for almost 2 years 15 months being in Iraq. Although I agree it is slightly over engineered, it is still an amazing vehicle that is capable of doing things you would have never thought. The wreckers we used had balls too. I've seen one pull a full system w/ an M1 on the trailer. Up in Mosul.
Mainly because you couldn't haul a load like that off-road. These are primarily off-highway vehicles and with the weight of one it's hard enough to keep going.
And because the weight of the truck and trailer alone is close to 37 tons... add a 67 ton M1A2 on the bed and you are over 100 tons of steel running down the road.
I LOVED driving mine when I was stationed at Ft. Knox!!
@bestamerica Oh my god! Such a good idea! We need to replace our military's officers with this random guy on youtube! Because he obviously knows much more than them!
Why Maus tank ? We have never built a maus tank in our history ! Maus tank is a concept not more ! But I was a soldier and I know german and american trucks !
this video tends to show how sweet it really was 8x8 off roadin` it...kickin it in these trucks outback at Carson with 2nd HET if only Lugo could have at some point learned to speak legible english so your blood wouldnt feel like boilin out standing there in formation when you were just by chance.... asked a question with the utmost of ego in mind thrown in for even more fun. Whooa firss sard'nt!
No, they didn't miss the turn - It's an overpass, but the tanks are too heavy to cross the bridge, so they descend the ramp and cross on the surface road, then take the ramp back up onto the other side of the bridge, back onto the highway again.

@shive0694 They also eat fuel like candy. It gets .6 miles per gallon on JP-8 jet fuel.
